Optimised battery charging - not working?
Hi I have a new iPhone 11, and I notice my iPhone over the last 2 nights goes to 100 percent in the middle of the night. So I presume it’s not work despite settings?

Apple just released a note with the solution to our issue !

If Optimized Battery Charging doesn't activate
Optimized charging is designed to engage only in locations where you spend the most time, such as your home and place of work. The feature doesn't engage when your usage habits are more variable, such as when you travel. Because of this, some location settings must be enabled for Optimized Battery Charging to activate. None of the location information used for this feature is sent to Apple.
Here are a list of settings that must be enabled:
hope that can helps

It bases its operation on what the phone is doing, not what you are doing with the phone. So if you have background processes running during the night that counts as usage, and it will bring the phone to full charge for those running processes. Try going to Settings/General/ Background App Refresh and turning it off.
I've found that it counts automatic iCloud backups as usage also. When my backup runs at 6 AM it doesn't go to full charge until just before that. But if it backs up at midnight it will fully charge in time for midnight.
I turned on significant locations the other day and that’s what got the battery optimize working. I do not think it has impacted the amount of battery my phone in any significant way
See my post right above yours. If you have background apps that run that counts as "use" and the charge will go to 100% in time for any background processes; I have observed and tested this. For a real test turn off Background App Refresh completely.
My XS Max only started working after enabling the location service settings described earlier in this thread, and then i had to patiently wait (i believe) about 7 or 8 day's for it to learn significant locations. I have noticed that it is very sensitive to when you re-charge within about an hour. So if you normally charge at 10pm, and place in on charge at 10:45pm, it probably won't work. Likewise if you put it on too early. In addition if you charge at any point outside what it thinks is your normal routine, it simply charges to 100%. It is a bit fussy, but i think the thought here is it's better to pull you phone off charge and have it be 100% than to pull it off and it's only at 80%. It seems Apple has erred on the side of caution with this feature to avoid all of the complaints they'd receive from people that the phone isn't charging to 100%. If you have all of the settings enabled and it's still not working, try clearing your Significant locations in system services, and it will re-learn - takes about 7 days.
update: I toggled it off for a full day & then back on again which got it working again.
Do you have Background App Refresh enabled in Settings/General? If you do apps that take advantage of this ability to run in background can run during the night; there are many that do to update their content (e.g. many news apps update frequently so when you open the app the latest news is displayed). It's likely that this is interpreted as "use" and the optimization feature charges to 100% to serve these background apps.
This is a complicated question, because when the battery is fully charged and the phone is plugged in any energy used by the phone comes from the mains rather than the battery, thus reducing the discharge/charge cycles of the battery. Battery life is affected most by the number of full charge-discharge cycles. So which is better for the battery, reducing the number of cycles or keeping the charge level at 80% and thus forcing the battery to discharge followed by charge more frequently?
While I realize I'm just one data point, my year-old XR is charged overnight (before optimized charging was available), every night. My battery capacity reported by the phone is still 100%. My cycle count is 96, measured with Coconut Battery, which reports my battery capacity as 95.6%.
A month after upgrading to iOS 13, my Xs Max started to make use of optimized charging. The lock screen notification only activates if the charge reaches 85% and before it goes to 100%. If you start charging the phone when the battery charge is under 85% it doesn't show the notification and the notification disappears when the battery is fully charged.
I realized it was using optimized battery charging because the battery usage graph showed that it was going up to 85%, stayed there for a few hours and then continued to 100% overnight.
It started working about 3rd day after updating to 13.2.2. I toggled it off for a day, then back on & it started working. For the heck of it, I looked at my boss’ phone (she had no clue what I was talking about😂) & her’s isn’t working. Mine has been consistently working though at this point. Will be interesting to see what happens after the next update.
For those of you that have it working, can you check to see if you have 'Significant Locations' turned on under Privacy>Location Services> System Services?
Apple says that needs to be on for it to work however, I don't want to have it on for the reason that I believe that would kill my battery faster throughout the day.
My wife charges her phone more than once per day and cannot get optimized charging, because phone cannot “learn” her inconsistent pattern. I charge once each 24 hour period from 9:00pm until 6:45AM, and optimized charging works for me.
Please ensure that you have enabled these location services.
Patience is the key. Can take several days to learn routine. Later iOS updates seem to have improved this feature, although notification is rare.
Yep if you charge during the day that’s likely the issue. Try to only charge at night before going to bed preferably around the same time each night.
Hey, mruprai.
I see that you're worried that Optimsed Battery Charging on your iPhone 11 isn't working as expected since it’s fully charged in the middle of the night, and I'm glad to help.
About Optimized Battery Charging on your iPhone -- Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and make sure the feature is on. When Optimized Battery Charging is on, you should also see a notification on the lock screen when your iPhone will be fully charged.
Let me know how that goes, and take care!
