Bluetooth Stuttering Issues | iPhone 11 Pro Max | iOS 13

My audio (from all apps) playback on Bluetooth devices is stuttering making it sound kinda like static. Currently on iPhone 11 Pro Max, iOS 13. My prior iPhone XS Max on iOS 13 worked perfectly. So it's either the iPhone 11 Pro Max or iOS 13 on it in particular. Anybody else experiencing the same issues? Thanks!

Yes, confirmed, turning off Hey Siri makes the crackling problem go away for me, after the first couple of seconds at least. I do still have random Bluetooth connection partial or full failures in the car however. I think that is connected to the general BT issues with iPhone 11, but also separate from the crackling problem. Given how slow/useless Siri is with this new phone it isn't too much of a loss to have to turn off the Hey Siri function. But yeah, they were able to make those two co-existing in all previous phones (since Hey Siri was introduced) so you'd hope they can fix this issue also.

I have been working with Apple support on this topic for several weeks, and they are in contact with Apple engineers trying to resolve the issue. I installed a Bluetooth logging profile at their request, and provided data to Apple on the stuttering time stamps. Apple just released a new version of iOS - namely 13.3.1 on January 28 that has some fixes for audio and Bluetooth enhancements. I installed & tested it yesterday, and it may have fixed the problem. I only heard one or two "stutters" in about an hour of various audio streams through different Bluetooth sound devices, and they may have been related to the source of the stream (Spotify, Sirius, Pandora). I will keep testing and provide feedback to Apple. They encourage anyone with this problem to install the latest update and see if it fixes the problem.

So at least with Subaru vehicles, I have pinpointed that removing ANY smart watch (Apple or not) from the equation prevents stuttering/skipping when streaming bluetooth music. I have submitted this issue through Subaru quality to investigate with the head unit maker (harman kardon). Will know more soon hopefully. On our non harman head units in newer models this isnt an issue. Also no problems on new or old Subaru head units with android phones and watches.

So the steps I took last night were:

Take my phone out of the case firstly to test..

  1. Erase the phone, set up as new phone with my sim card inserted to activate.
  2. Do not connect to Wifi
  3. Do not sign into Apple account or iCloud or restore any settings
  4. Connect to wireless speaker and stream a podcast
  5. Didn't work, still skipping and cutting out for 2-3 seconds at a time

Then I tried the following:

  1. Erase the phone, set up as new phone with my sim card removed
  2. Connect to home Wifi to activate
  3. Do not sign into Apple account or iCloud or restore any settings
  4. Connect to wireless speaker and stream same podcast
  5. Didn't work, still skipping and cutting out for 2-3 seconds at a time

Then I went and got my wife's iPhone X, and set it exactly where I ran the test on my iPhone 11 Pro Max

Connect to same wireless speaker and stream same podcast from my test

Music streams flawlessly, no interference or drops in connection, totally stable Bluetooth connection

FYI both phones running 13.5.1 firmware

My conclusion is that there is nothing wrong with my phone hardware wise and since I never signed into iCloud or restored any settings, the issue isn't software related either. The only thing I can think of is interference from another device that my phone was once connected to that is located near the room I performed the tests. I have an Amazon echo dot in the room next to it and an Echo Show in the room directly below it. I have connected my phone to both those speakers in the past to use as a bluetooth speaker ("Alexa connect my phone", and pairing with the Echo to stream music from my phone to the speaker") You have to say "Alexa, disconnect my phone" to disconnect the phone. Your phone is then saved in the Echo memory should you try to connect again. My wife has never connected to any of the Echos this way with her phone.

Next step is to perform the test again with my phone streaming music and then go and switch off each of the Echo devices one by one and see if it stops the bluetooth interference.

I use the phone bluetooth mostly in my car for music and phone calls and with a bluetooth speaker when I'm on the lake on my Stand Up Paddle board. With my iphone 6s, it worked flawlessly, never had an issue.

I upgraded to an iphone 11 pro last year, and since then, audio keeps stuttering in my car (music and phone calls), and with my bluetooth speaker as well.

The only solution that works 100% for me is to have the phone away from the car radio or the bluetooth speaker. For instance, if I put the phone in the car door instead of the "normal" spot under the car radio system in the center, I don't have any issues with music or phone calls. As soon as I bring the phone closer, I start to have issues. Same with my UE boom 2 bluetooth speaker, if the phone is just next to it, it stutters and cuts the music, but if I take the phone away from it (1-2 meters), I have absolutely no issues anymore.

At least I found a way around the issue, but I'm still really annoyed with it. When you pay so much money for a supposedly premium product, you expect it to work properly...

I finally figured out with 100% certainty what my issue was. I have had a device unplugged for several weeks and have not had one issue with stuttering on my phone until I turned the device back on yesterday and instantly started to get stuttering from Bluetooth audio streaming, even in my car parked out at the end of the driveway. The device is a Logitech Bluetooth audio adaptor for wireless streaming. It is a small square black box with a blue, Bluetooth icon on the top that is on sale on Amazon for $40. I have had mine for several years so maybe I have a defective unit or an earlier model. It also explains why I have had this stuttering issue crop up for years through several different iPhones and follow me through different homes. I used to use this device to stream my audio to my home surround sound system. While the Logitech device still works great in that respect, it seems to have an issue where it interferes with iPhones streaming Bluetooth audio even after you have unpaired it.

Anyways, I just wanted to share this in case it might help some of you with your streaming Bluetooth stuttering issues. Maybe you may not have one of these Logitech devices but you probably have a defective Bluetooth device in your home within range that is causing the same type of interference.

Even forgetting the device on the iPhone doesn’t truly “forget” whatever device is causing the stuttering. You need to turn off whatever device is pinging the phone. Best way is by process of elimination, connect your phone to a Bluetooth speaker and play music, when it starts to stutter, walk around your house and unplug every Bluetooth device you have ever previously connected to with your phone. When the stuttering stops you have found your offender. Go back to my previous posts in this thread and see how this worked for me...literally years of this issue and I found the culprit device making all of my iPhones stutter when using Bluetooth audio.

I will add, when I say "forget" doesn't forget a device, the iPhone may well forget it but the Bluetooth device you were previously connected to doesn't forget your iPhone and it keeps pinging it, causing stuttering. In my case it was a Logitech Bluetooth adaptor and after posting the details here, I helped a couple of people resolve their stuttering issue who had the exact same Logitech Bluetooth adaptor as me. I guarantee most if not all the people with the issue here stems from the same underlying issue, whether it be a Logitech adaptor or some other device which keeps pinging the phone. You can resolve the issue by getting a new phone, but as soon as you connect via Bluetooth with the new phone to the device causing the issue, the same thing will happen no matter how many new phones you get. You can only resolve the issue by finding whatever device is causing the issue, whether it is a Bluetooth speaker, watch, toothbrush, whatever.

Just downloaded IOS 13.3 update, went to my bluetooth settings clicked on my car and chose forget this device. Went to the car and removed the iphone from my Rav4 phone settings, shut the car off and restarted and connected the Iphone as a new device. I made 3 calls and no static. Hopefully this is resolved. I am hesitant, because looking at the issues the update resolved: static or stuttering was not listed, but it does seem to be working.

Hi guys!

I think i figured out the problem! I shuted down my apple watch and the connection with my bluetooth headphone it's ok, when i turned on the apple watch the problem came back, so, i think the apple watch is the problem, i dont know if because my iphone has 2 connections bluetooth or other thing.

PS: Sorry my enligh, im from brazil!

EDIT: My headphone is the xiaomi airdots, i have another device and its works ok, i think its because de airdots is 5.0 and the other is 4.1.
