Random shutdown Boot Camp (Windows 10 v. 1903) when connected to LG Ultrafine 4K

Hi, I'm wondering if anybody else is having an issue where their MacBook Pro will randomly shutdown when it is running Windows 10 and it is connected to an LG Ultrafine 4K display. I have the first generation 4k display so it has a resolution of 4096x2304.

The particular machine I have is a late 2016 15" MacBook Pro w/ Touch Bar (Radeon Pro 455). This has been happening fairly frequently lately and it's rather annoying.

When it happens the display will turn black and then the computer restarts about 30-45 seconds later. If it boots up into macOS I get a message saying that your machine has restarted because of a problem. I don't get any sort of BSOD in Windows or any warning messages when Windows boots back up. I have the latest drivers for Boot Camp installed including the latest AMD graphics drivers from AMD's website. I'm not sure what I can do to try and solve this issue.

That's interesting. Thanks for including the reference. I wonder how much longer until Microsoft gets around to fixing it.

Do you think that even though I was able to get 1903 installed without issue on my machine there could still be some issues present? On macOS I have the latest version of Mojave and presumably the latest version of Boot Camp as well.

Thanks for all the help with this Loner T! When I get a chance I'll do a fresh installation of 1809 and see if that solves the reboot problem for now.

Post back an we can try to isolate the issues.

How do you know so much about the inner workings of macOS and Windows. I would love to have a better understanding so I can troubleshoot some of these problems on my own more easily.

I spend too much time reading technical documents. If you are an insomniac, there are quite a few resources at

Thanks for the resources! I will check them out. Do you have any recommendations for Windows? Should I just check out Microsoft's developer resources? I know there are the sysinternals and Windows Internals books I can check out too.

Once I get 1809 up and running and have had a few days to test it out I'll post back here to let you know how it's going. That probably won't be for a week or so because I'll be away from my computer for several days.

I went ahead and got 1809 v2 installed last night and got most of the software I need reinstalled. I let the machine sit booted in Windows 10 overnight. When I got back to it this morning I had to hit the power button to boot the machine so I thought something had caused it to shut down. When Windows came back up everything on the desktop was how I left it so I assumed it just went into hibernation. I just rebooted into macOS and I was greeted again by a "Your computer was restarted because of a problem" message.

This time, however, I didn't have any peripherals plugged in at all. The only thing plugged in was power. Here's a screenshot of that dialog box. I can post the entire output if that would be useful.

I have the mouse and keyboard (both wired at home) connected to a 4 port usb switch similar to this (https://www.amazon.com/IOGEAR-Peripheral-Sharing-Switch-GUS434/dp/B00Y3CTDAY). This is then connected to Apple’s USB-C to USB-A dongle and plugged in to a USB-C port on the back of the LG UltraFine 4K display.

The LG UltraFine 4K is plugged in to my MacBook Pro with the included USB-C cable.

The SSDs are plugged in via USB-C directly to the MacBook at home and they are using the provided USB-C to USB-C cables that came with the Samsung T5 SSDs. If I had to guess they are USB-IF certified, but I’m not sure how I would fine out.

Thank you Loner T for the guidance on this. Right now I have the wired mouse and wired keyboard plugged in via Apple’s USB-C to USB-A adapters, the display is plugged in via USB-C and I have one T5 SSD plugged in via USB-C. I have the laptop open and the display is only being routed to the external display.

I didn’t mention this earlier, but i wanted to let you know that i do not seem to have these random shutdowns when using macOS with the exact same setup. I have only noticed it happening under Windows 10. I have been using Windows 10 more frequently lately just because the software I use is Windows only so perhaps that is why I’ve taken notice.
