iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

The same happened to my iPhone Pro. I just got it yesterday and kept it in a pocket with nothing else. Less than a day later and there's already a scratch. I didn't have this problem with the iPhone X.

You are missing the point, William. I read that article.

The decision was made by Apple to strengthen drop protection to the detriment of scratch resistance. That was the wrong decision, as thousands of users are attesting to.

I completely disagree with your assessment it was the wrong decision. Yes, this is a vocal minority of complainers on this thread, but I believe most people, given the choice of investing in a simple, inexpensive screen protector, vs having to pay significant sums of money to replace a broken screen, will believe the trade-off is worth it.

I have ZERO scratches on my iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro Max. They have screen protectors. Both phones have been dropped on more than occasion and yet the screen did not crack. The complete lack of people coming to this forum to complain about having to pay lots of $$ to replace a cracked screen with the 11 series phones confirms Apple made a good decision.

"The complete lack of people coming to this forum to complain.." WTF are you talking about?! There are 163 pages, and counting, of customers complaining!

Buying a $1000+ phone that Requires a $50 screen protector is ridiculous.

I am fortunate enough to be able to expense all Apple hardware and as a tech CEO who develops apps, to need every new model of iPhone/iPad, MacBooks, etc. The iPhone 11 is BY FAR the WORST in terms of scratch protection. It's not even close to being as durable as the previous models. And I am rather "anal" and very careful with my devices.

I will be contacting my Apple Exec Relations team member about this.

You didn't understand what I wrote. The complete lack of people complaining is NOT about scratches. It's about not having cracked screens, which is a major expense if their phone screen cracks.

You don't have to spend $50 on a screen protector. Even the top of the line Belkin Screen Protector Apple installs in store, doesn't cost $50 and there are literally hundreds of less expensive, but high quality protectors for $10 you can get on Amazon. But a cracked screen on iPhone 11 Pro Max costs $329. You tell me which you'd rather pay? $10 - $30 for a screen protector or $329 to replace a cracked screen.

While I agree that most will suggest a screen protector, and I don’t want to deter anyone from buying one. I offer my advice I have gone through every screen protector made for the 11 as well as a handful of cases for it ranging in otter boxes to life proof, much like I did with pervious model iPhones. My 6 plus, 7, X, and now my 11 are in worse shape then my 4s. The only difference is that all the newer models went from the box into a case with screen protectors on from the hands of Apple employees. My 4s is the only one I ran nude. That one has survived 2 drops a toddler and a 30 second chew session with a German Shepard. So yes one would think a screen protector and case would be enough. I leave the choice to the owners on running fully protected or nude. In my case running fully protected did absolutely nothing to save the phones

I don't know if you truncated that sentence on purpose or if you didn't read it to the end. What lobsterghost1 actually said was

He did NOT say people weren't coming to this forum to complain (though the number of people complaining here is a very small percentage of iPhone 11 owners). He said they weren't complaining about cracked (which is different than scratched) screens.

I'm sorry but I have never cracked a screen on any of my iphones (starting with gen1) either. The fact that I now have a gash of a scratch on this after 3 days of use AT HOME is absurd. Not dropping your phone is more intuitive than... i don't know–I don't even know where I got this scratch while at home in quarantine. This phone hasn't even seen an inside of a pocket. It's ridiculous. I'd rather scratch resistance during regular use because I know better than to drop my phones.

Is Apple recognizing this issue and are they doing anything about it? Please give any information in regards to this issue.

William, like the rest of us in this forum, is a user, just like you. If you want to discuss the matter with Apple, you'll need to contact them directly. You can use the "Contact Support" like at the top right corner of every page of these forums. I would caution you that, because the stores are closed, people are reporting that the wait times are longer than usual. And, I'd be really surprised if they gave you an answer to that question. But, only Apple could answer it.

The apologists on this thread are maddening. The high susceptibility of some of these phones to scratches is clearly an issue for many people. The decision Apple made to make the screens soft in return for greater impact resistance is a bad move for a lot of people. In the unlikely event of a cracked screen applecare+ takes care of that. In the very likely event of a scratched screen applecare+ does not cover it full stop so users have to pay full price for a new screen out of pocket. We have every right to be irritated. It has been documented earlier in this thread by people having access to larger numbers of these phones that certain ones have softer screens than others, so there is some manufacturing variability or QC involved here.

No one one here in this thread can do anything about the issue. You will need to contact Apple directly.

Calling anyone an apologist is simply incorrect. I am not apologizing for Apple. I don't think Apple has anything to apologize for. I get that you and many others who didn't put a screen protector on your phones are not pleased with scratches. But Apple AND Samsung (and likely LG) are using a more durable (FROM BREAKING) glass formula, which can scratch easier. It's a trade-off they chose to avoid people having to spend huge sums of money to replace their screens.

As to your assertion that AppleCare+ covers this, that's not really accurate. AppleCare+ costs $299 for a 24 month plan or $15/month if one chooses the monthly plan. If you crack your screen, you're still paying over $300 (add the AppleCare+ plan cost + $29 to Apple to replace the screen. So not really any less expensive, is it? And not everyone who owns iPhone pays for AppleCare+.

Feel free.

Most people realize a $30 screen protector is insignificant in cost compared to the price of a device and provides a great degree of protection.

I wonder how people would feel about screen protectors if Apple did as Samsung does now with their top of the line phones and just applies one at the factory; would it be OK you didn't have to pay that extra $30?

Apr 23, 2020 7:43 PM in response to Alexdüring

Yeah, that’s the whole thing. The glass is meant to be stronger against drops so that’s good nothing happens. But the screen gets scratches really easy. Just from placing the phone in a pocket it can get fine scratches. Happened to me on day one. And people are suggesting screen protectors but I find it ridiculous that out of the box it can get scratched that easily. I have owns every iPhone and never use screen protectors and have never had an issue like this.
