iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

Older smartphones had more scratch resistant, but more brittle glass.

Since people don't like paying $300 to replace their glass when dropping their phone a foot, cell phone makers overall (not just Apple) moved to formulas that are more shatter-resistant but are slightly more scratch prone.

This issue is solved with a $20 screen protector; you can't apply something for $20 that will stop your screen from shattering in a fall.

You spend $20 for a screen protector and never worry about it again.

That seems pretty simple, where a screen protector is of little efficacy in preventing screen damage if your phone is dropped.

That's because (at least high end) watch crystals are made of synthetic sapphire.

They are very scratch resistant - but they are highly vulnerable to shattering.

As has been stated multiple times in this thread, the glass Apple (and all other smartphone vendors) use sacrifices a bit of scratch resistance in favor of much higher shatter resistance.

Physics and materials science dictates you can have a material which is very impervious to scratches but that shatters easily, or a material that is more resistant to shattering but scratches more easily. You can't have both.

can you provide a link or cite this info?

this would mean that they knowingly Falsely advertised the phone as one of the strongest phones.

It is a marketing contradiction. Especially because my phone fell 3 inches on the 3rd day. Cracked and shattered the back. Then They are the only ones that can change the glass on it? That if you use a non-Apple branded replacement the device just doesn’t work.

They should not be allowed to do that.

1000 bucks for a phone and they treat you like a second class citizen. I just want my phone fixed free. Ridiculous. So much for loyalty.

But using these iPhones exactly the same way as other previous iPhones results these new iPhones getting scratches in just days. That impacts the pleasure and value of these phones, whereas previous models survived years without scratches with the same use.

So, a screen protector is practically a must, while it was not needed before. Apple got the formula for the "toughest glass" only half right this year. Hopefully the next iPhone will have improved scratch resistance – or comes with a screen protector in the box.

So if Apple raised the price of the next phone by $20 and includes the same screen protector you could buy yourself in the box, you'd be happy?

Why is that better than deciding upon which protector you want and applying it at the time of purchase?

The most obvious thing to avoid is sliding it into or out of tight pockets where everyday debris could scratch the screen of the phone.

You could put your phone in something like an Otterbox Defender case where the entire phone is protected from impact and scratching, but even if you don't there are other cases where a soft cover protects the phone.

That's aside from, of course, installing a screen protector before you leave the store with your new device.

I will let others here who have not had issues with scratching describe their use cases; I had my protector installed by staff at the Apple Store immediately upon the phone being removed from the box.

As did I. I learned my lesson, when I foolishly didn't put a screen protector on my iPhone 6. I don't keep my phone in my pocket, ever. But my iPhone go covered in micro-scratches. Since then, I have instantly installed a screen protector out of the box. I figure with a nearly $1300 phone, a $39 Apple installed Belkin protector just makes sense.

Wasn't offended in the least. You are just one of hundreds of people who chimed into this thread, responding to the very first post and you said:

"what gives? This must be a defect in the way they processed the glass?? I’ve never had this issue before. It’s not as hard as previous models. There is just no way. This flaw defeats the purpose of a touch screen dust/proof/waterproof phone. And more to the point - makes me seriously question if I would buy another one in future."

You made it quite clear you didn't read past the first post and I gave you information, which should have helped you better understand why your phone may be more prone to scratches. You can either make glass which is hard to scratch, but breaks more easily. Or you can make glass which is easier to scratch, but doesn't break as easily as the phone preceding the current iPhones. No one has figured out how to make glass which is harder to break and harder to scratch. And this time, Apple and Samsung both chose the harder to break, easier to scratch glass.

Did you read either of the links I provided? There is no defect in the manufacturing of the glass. And you'd have understood that if you read either of the two articles I linked for you.

Whether you buy another iPhone is up to you. But be assured, Samsung and Google don't make phones any more resistant to scratches.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I hope are safe and healthy in these difficult times.

I’m having the same issue. Three months down the line I’ve a deep scratch on my screen. I work in a school. So I don’t use the phone all day. It’s used at the weekend and only places in my Handbag in the back phone pocket. It’s never been near anything sharp. So that’s disgusting when it advertises strong screens. My iPhone 7 I had years and never had that issue.
