iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

Older smartphones had more scratch resistant, but more brittle glass.

Since people don't like paying $300 to replace their glass when dropping their phone a foot, cell phone makers overall (not just Apple) moved to formulas that are more shatter-resistant but are slightly more scratch prone.

This issue is solved with a $20 screen protector; you can't apply something for $20 that will stop your screen from shattering in a fall.

Okay. After half a year of postings about this topic I guess we all know that the phone quality is bad. But I am sure that most of us will buy the next iPhone again and Apple is not going to help us. That’s the fact

If that's how you judge quality, then every smartphone from every manufacturer is "bad."

Every other premium smartphone uses similar glass. Good luck with whichever alternative you choose in the future.

Shatter resistance isn’t as important, its covered by applecare+, while scratches are not covered so in spite of paying hundreds for applecare you still have to pay full pop for a new screen. The screen is much more susceptible to scratches not just a little. I have decades old glass tabletops used daily that have much less severe scratches than my iPhone 11 did after a day, and that was using the box to transport it rather than throwing it in with my keys and other phone like I normally would.

Perhaps bad idea for you, but certainly not for me. Good quality screen protectors are VERY SLIM, add virtually NO WEIGHT to your iPad, DON'T BREAK at the slightest blow and DO PROVIDE EXCELLENT PROTECTION.

I disagree with everything you suggest about adding a screen protector. But you are entitled to your opinion as long as you understand it is YOUR opinion and not one shared by me or anyone I know who has put a good screen protector on their phone.

If some other people had bothered reading past the first post they would realize that just because the compromise to make the screen softer in exchange for being more shatterproof was deliberate doesn't make it good. They would also realize that there is evidence of manufacturing variability. The screens on at least some of these phones are very soft such that normal daily use without a screen protector is not possible. Just because you are happy with your phone and are content with Apple doing this at least in part on a deliberate basis, doesn't mean any of the rest of us need to accept it nor give Apple repeat business. Apple adds insult to injury by taking money for apple care but not allowing us to apply a screen replacement against our scratch damaged screens.

Show me where Apple made this statement; they never said "hardest" as that has a specific scientific meaning.

Your Ferrari comment is interesting, as few if any owners of high-end sports cars drive them without having them wrapped in film or without having a ceramic coating applied (or both) just to protect the paint.

There are people here who take the risk, use their 11s without a protector and have had no issues, but it makes much, much more sense to use a screen protector to protect their purchase for the extremely minimal amount they cost.

And if they don't have one in stock let me know and I can mail you mine as it did absolutely nothing to save my phone from cosmetic damage my fingernail took out both the screen protector and the screen on my 11 pro

Given that multiple tests have shown the iPhone screen to be between a 5 and 6 on the Mohs hardness scale and a fingernail is about 2.5, I don't see how that could possibly happen unless you had a small amount of rock debris between your fingernail and the screen (quite easy actually, as many of the things that make up sand have a Mohs hardness of greater than 6.)

I’ve had my iPhone 11 for two days and I have been especially careful with it (not placing it face down, not putting anything on top of it, only cleaning with a micro fibre cloth etc.) as I am waiting for a screen protector to arrive. However I have noticed two small scratches on my screen that I have no explanation for.

I don’t think that there is much I can do other than cleaning the scratches with a silicone based polish and micro fibre cloth which I find makes them less noticeable and appear slightly smoother. It should also prevent them from getting bigger. Overall very upset that this should happen so quickly on a new phone.

Not at all.

You may need a screen protector because of the way you use your phone; others may not.

It would be like every auto maker adding a 3M clear bra to every vehicle at the factory; they could but then everyone would have to pay for protective film not everyone needs.

Oh, and auto paint has been getting less and less scratch-resistant as time goes on, largely for environmental reasons.

The first thing most any buyer of a high end vehicle does? Get a clear bra or wrap applied, of course:

Ferrari 458 Clear Bra Application

Note Android phone manufacturers have the same issues, and Samsung now applies a screen protector at the factory.

Apple could do the same and just raise the price of the phone $20 if you prefer, but why not allow customers a choice instead?

I have this same issue. Its ridiculous, no metal or sharp objects have been near the screen. Basic swiping with my fingers have caused this issue. Never used a screen protector as I have been an iPhone user forever and none of my other phones have had this issue and never should. I have apple care for this device and spoke with them today. Was told there is nothing they can or will do unless the screen is cracked. Extremely disappointing and upsetting for what we pay for these devices and for apple care. I pay full price for this and this is what happens. This is making me reconsider future purchases. I suggest anyone and everyone who has had this issue to contact apple and let them know. They said it needs to be documented. If enough experience this issue they can issue an extension of some sort to have this covered and replacement screens covered. So please call and report this and demand it be documented. If they don't know they can't fix it.

Support? OK you have our condolences. No other support is available from us or from Apple

I have a screen protector on a phone than only ever goes in my empty pants/trousers pocket, or in my hand, or on its back on the night stand. Three times I chipped a piece off the edge of it. No idea where but £3 later it is new again.

Same reason I used to fit a daylight filter on my coated SLR lenses. Coatings are very soft. (On phones I might say a useless gimmick but that might be controversial).
