iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

The same happened to my iPhone Pro. I just got it yesterday and kept it in a pocket with nothing else. Less than a day later and there's already a scratch. I didn't have this problem with the iPhone X.

So then what is this for then ? You want to only talk about what is good ? I talk about the good and bad with apple products. People are just sharing their experience. When I saw scratches in 2 days on my screen I though I did something wrong. When I saw others also share the same thing happen to them. I felt better. Apple remedied the screen issue with my phone. I am happy now but carry a fat phone. People pay hard earned money for these phones. They can share what ever they like that’s what it’s for. Why do you try to swim against the tide ? I don’t see a problem and certainly apple gets a overall pulse of issues from these posts on a range of issues.

This community is for tech questions people are having that we can help to resolve like what to do if you forgot your password, how to take a screenshot, how to restore an iPhone, etc.

This is not for talking just good, people are having a ton of issues with iOS 13 (me included), but since we can't resolve these issues because we are users just like you are, you have to contact Apple and let them know.

Apple is not here. They won't ever read this. This makes these reports pretty useless.

Most of the people complain to apple too, also do you really think that no one working for apple does not visit the forums from time to time? Also that he will not comment what he see here with his coworkers and team lead? On top of that, do you really think that the executives that end up reading news about scratches leading to this thread, won't open and check the posts here? And finally, do you think there was going to be any news about the problem if it was not for this thread?

Also for the ad - it totally states about scratching too, because the statement is and I quote: "It’s tough out there" while they throw different objects (some got metal and sharp edges in them, look carefully with a lot of pausing to identify them) with high velocity at the phone. It goes without saying that a high velocity object with sharp edges and/or metal parts thrown at glass can scratch it easily. Actually if the ad was real, whats happening is more likely to scratch the glass than shatter it. Dunno why you think it's just about shattering with what is shown. It's not something unreal to think that people will expect the phone screen to hold up against scratches not only as their old iphone, but better.

Also even if 1/3rd of the people here are not completely honest how they treat their phone, the other 2/3rds that got their screen scratched for few days with only face up on the table and in their pocket alone? I use naked expensive smartphones from 15 years (nokia symbian says hi) and never broke or scratch any with latest being a note 9. Face up on the table and in my pockets alone. Don't like screen protectors, their feel, their reflections, their edges, etc. (oh, I have experience on my gf phone with a 40$ one from premium screen protectors maker, so spare me how good they are) and I don't need them as I never drop my phones. What I do is putting my phone in my pocket and as I can see it, this one cant do this simple and careful way to carry your phone with you. :)

I don't see preinstalled screen protector and a case in the box, I expect the phone to be engineered to withstand a normal not abusive use. Chasing shatter resistance is all cool, but not while sacrificing that much the scratch resistance and for people like you that use case/protector - it doesn't matter if it's iphone 11 or iphone 6s, both will survive 95% of the drops and even 100% with high quality cases/screen protector, but all 100% of us using our phones as they are sold to us will get a /badly/ scratched screen in days, including those of us t hat really take care for their electronics to absurd levels like never leaving the phone face down on a surface. Also how those screens will look after a year? :)

It's not the same glass, apple modifies it and it's custom in their phones, it's NOT gorilla glass 6. Also as mentioned a lot of times: you can go to stores with both samsung, huawei and apple - only apple phones got scratches.

While all the phones ever made got such threads, they are not 30+ pages long in two weeks. The previous year iphone thread is 5-6 pages after a whole year. On top of that the scratches shown here are brutal. You have like 30 posts repeating the same thing, why? I can imagine that someone who is interested and post here already read 20 of yours with the same information in them.

The back side is just dirty, not really smudges, is it? I can't seem to find any scratch on the back side just yet with mine.

Is it safe to assume that this may be an issue with the coating layer, and not the glass itself? Material expert please chime in your thoughts. Looks like the scratches are mostly produced by softer materials, like plastic, or fiber.

Expressing anger and attacks won't do us any good here, people. I for one claim some responsibility on my part by — according to some of you — not babying it enough. But it still does not explain how, or why my previous iPhones were pretty much scratch-free after months and years of 'abuse' without every putting a single screen protector.

I get why some of you chose to put screen protectors. Please try and understand too that there are those who prefer to use their phones without.

ps. Have you seen this? Painful to watch, but no worse than JerryRig's :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0VWwY6MR0k

I was so happy to receive my 11 Pro Max today at 2pm. Set up phone and was using it by 2:45 as I was multi-tasking calls for work.

Perhaps took phone out of pocket 8-9 times during the next 8 hours and when I looked at it the last time I noticed a little scratch about 5mm southeast from center of screen. I was a little shocked at first then my face got a bit red after reading some of the reports here and on another site about how easy this 11 series screens are to become scratched.

If I could take a pic of it I would but there's a couple examples here of tiny 3-4mm length scratches. Quite small and tolerable yet intolerable since it's a scratch on a less than day old phone with the 'toughest screen to date' ad-lib.

Cheers,

Johnny

Just stop. What’s your point here ? If don’t have a problem stop trying to throw a wrench into things. I don’t Care if it’s Corning or anyone else. This screen is not acceptable. Are you kidding me ? There are numerous glass surfaces I use. Just don’t be argumentative. Yeah use your phone and be sympathetic to Corning.

If it's unacceptable, then please return it if you still can, this isn't the phone for you.

But don't get anything Samsung or Google offers as an alternative because, guess what, they also use Corning Gorilla Glass 6 and you will find them to be just as "fragile." The Samsung Galaxy S10+ even comes with a screen protector pre-applied.

You're right, it isn't "Gorilla Glass 6" per se - Apple has custom glass made for them - but it's the same issue that causes susceptibility to scratches, just like GG6.

Please do just one Google search, I beg of you. The Internet is filled with threads where people are complaining of the fact that the glass on Samsung and Google phones scratches very easily.

Why isn't there a huge thread? Because there's not one central forum to complain to like this one.

I also haven't seen any scratches on iPhone 11s in stores when I've looked at them.

Oct 11, 2019 6:35 AM in response to Dogcow-Moof

GG6 does not scratch that easily. Also the note 10 plus thread is 2 pages long on the samsung official forum (this is apple official forum, no? I can link you quite big threads on other forums too) and some of the posts are about the pre applied screen protector. Btw, samsung atleast put one even if not the highest quality - apple did what? Show ad throwing with high velocity at the phone objects that got metal and sharp edges in them and stating "It’s tough out there".

If that ad was real any recent phone is in more danger from scratching vs shattering. Also the ad statement is general for everything, with further proof with the water resistance shown in it, it's not about drops only (it's least about shattering actually from what is shown).

I know quite a few people with GG6 phones - it does not scratch that easily. There is also a possibility with defective limited number of manufactured units. The internet got it's fair share of those threads for every high end phone, but this is totally on another scale and the scratches are brutal on some of the phones (so much that even with abuse you will have hard time to replicate then on another phone).

Hmmm, that's a good point. Maybe Samsung got ahead of it. Maybe Samsung and Apple had to choose between scratch or crack resistance and they both chose crack resistant but Samsung knew you'd need a screen protector as a result and provided one. That would be sad if Apple dropped the obvious ball if that's the case.

I know I just watched a video where a guy took a hammer to the iphone 11 screen and it took a pretty good shot before cracking, he didn't show how quickly it scratched but I was impressed by the shot from the hammer it took.

I've got to say, I use a Note 8 for work and it doesn't have a screen protector as it interferes with the s-pen but over last year of no screen protector, not one scratch. Maybe it was a bad batch or maybe something went wrong all together but unless these are all fake complaints, something is up.

Your pockets are filled with micro-sand particles. Keys likely won't scratch your phone. But sand surely will. There are many articles about this. When your pants are washed, the lint and dust bond with laundry soap, then get dried to from micro-sand particles. You can't see or feel them. But your iPhone screen can be scratched by them.

I NEVER would consider putting my very expensive iPhone in a pocket without a screen protector on it. I actually wouldn't put my phone in a pocket even WITH a screen protector.
