iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

Older smartphones had more scratch resistant, but more brittle glass.

Since people don't like paying $300 to replace their glass when dropping their phone a foot, cell phone makers overall (not just Apple) moved to formulas that are more shatter-resistant but are slightly more scratch prone.

This issue is solved with a $20 screen protector; you can't apply something for $20 that will stop your screen from shattering in a fall.

Because it is a result of user error unless the scratches were present when the plastic wrap the phone was shipped in was removed.

You obviously may disagree as to whether whatever scratched the screen should have been able to scratch it or not, but it was a result of some action a user took.

Does that make it a user error? Not necessarily.

Was it the result of a user action? Yes it was.

Is protecting from that the reason screen protectors exist as a product? Yes it is.

Does it mean you need a screen protector to protect from any and all damage? It depends on your use case for the device. Some people use cases with integral screen protectors. Others use their phones in way that guarantee they will never rub up against anything even remotely abrasive unless windblown sand impacts the device.

Would I be happy if my display were scratched? Of course not.

It's also why phones I purchase do not come out of the plastic wrap until a screen protector is on hand and ready to be applied.

Though you are usually covered, it's no different than calling your insurance agent to make sure a new car is covered before ever driving it off the lot.

I had a similar experience to everyone else in this thread. My Iphone 11 Pro had scratches appearing within 1-2 days of purchase. I was taking good care of the device, and I believe the scratches appeared from normal use taking in and out of my pocket. The scratches got significantly worse both in quantity and severity as I continued using it the following days.

I ended up returning to the Apple Store a week later to return the phone and get a full refund. Instead, Apple offered to replace the phone with a new one and apply a screen protector free of charge. I do believe what Apple did for me was the right thing to do. I hope others who have tried to remedy their situation similar to mine can end up with a similar outcome.

Once scratched the phone is scratched. Using toothpaste or backing soda would logically only worsen the situation, so a pretty bad idea.

If you've only had the phone a week, return it for full refund. You can then buy the phone again and put a screen protector on to avoid this from the beginning. You have 14 days to return the phone for refund.

Being scratch resistant is not the expectation. The expectation is that my phone doesn’t look like it’s been keyed after simply being placed in my pocket... I’ve had iPhones for the better part of a decade and have never used a screen protector and have never seen this kind of wear and tear so quickly... lesson learned that this screen is too fragile to forgo a screen protector..

I’m giving you the same answers as Apple not because I work for them (if I do they’ve been forgetting to send me a paycheck for decades now), but as Apple decides whether they’re going to replace your phone, and they have been clear about the fact that this is not a defect, why wouldn’t I tell you the same?

Scratches do not come from denim pocket materials, they come from small particles of sand or other hard material that actually collect in pockets as a matter of course.

You could rub the screen all day with a soft denim cloth and not cause any scratches; the softest microfiber cloth with a few small grains of sand embedded likely would.

To not use a screen protector is akin to never washing or waxing your car; you don’t have to but your automaker won’t cover it when the paint fails either.

To use your example, the wind often does have sand and other particles in it, and if your paint is scratched for any environmental reason or your windshield chips, it won’t be covered. Feel free to call any auto dealer to verify.

As far as Tom’s, like many such websites they make their money on traffic, and nothing drives web traffic like a good “Apple has a defective product” story. Tom’s also knows well that all other premium smart phones have people complaining about similar scratch susceptibility, as explained by the Verge article people love to dismiss.

I think your missing the point. The phone is advertised as toughest screen ever. You shouldn’t sell a product that doesn’t crack but scratches easier than previous models. Who wants to have screen protectors on, Nobody does. I don’t drop my phone but if I did and it cracked, fine. However if I take my phone out of my pocket and it scratches, that is unacceptable at all levels of consumerism for a product. I got my screen replaced after 2 months of use. Put a screen protector on (cost €10). Now after about 1 months use that cheap protector still looks like new and phone is in same environment conditions as before.

please stop talking about mohs scale, that’s what apple and their design team do. People here are talking about real life experience not luck but general everyday use of a product that has been advertised as being better than its predecessors and that hasn’t been delivered

Just go to any Apple Store and compare the exhibited Iphones!

The Iphones 11 are littered with scratches! The Iphones X and 8 have only a few scratches.

Clearly visible with dark display and held against the light.

The Iphones 11 partly have such deep scratches that they are clearly visible even with a bright display.

And yes, watch the people for a few minutes, they grab the Iphones 11 and X / 8 alike!

If that is not the ultimate proof of a systematic product or production defect ..

Looking forward for the answers from the "Apple Marketing Department" with "creative counter-arguments" ;-)

You can disparage me if you want (calling someone a Troll is disparaging and against the terms of use of this forum), but the fact remains, air is not scratching the screens on iPhones. Keys aren't. Coins aren't. If there are particles of sand in your pants pocket and trust me, there likely are as sand is pretty much everywhere (regardless of its origination), THAT can scratch the screen on your iPhone.

I request all to please upload picture of their scratched screen here (I already have uploaded). In that case Apple might notice it and give some attention to the issue.

i saw this problem with many people. They are scratching their head as most probably they are thinking about 200-300$ screen replacement cost. Although there isn’t much you could do to reverse the things now, but instead I suggest next time you see your iPhone naked, please remember that it’s a 1000$ piece of metal/glass and deserves at least cheap 10$ worth of cloathing. I always use 10-15$ screen guard and sphigen transparent tpu cover for my new iPhones that I have ever bought. And haven’t noticed any scratch on these. Maybe you could have manufacturing defect, bust most probably you yourself got that scratch unknowingly. Use protection! I know your iPhone looks pretty seductive naked, but please consider the alternatives.

The explanation was given in previous posts.

Yes, prior models were more scratch-resistant with the result that there were many, many more reports of screens shattering from a relatively minor drop; just use your favorite Internet search engine if you don't believe me. Those reports have become quite rare in the iPhone 11 models (though of course it's still quite possible, even from a single low drop just due to dumb bad luck.)

If you choose to ignore that, it's fine, but literally millions of people are using this type of glass every day without issue on phones from every vendor, not just Apple.

If you want to complain to Apple about it, feel free:

Frankly, most would be happy to have a few marks on their screen rather than have to pay $149 or more to have it replaced if it shatters, and even those few marks can be completely avoided simply by using a $10 screen protector.
