iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

Older smartphones had more scratch resistant, but more brittle glass.

Since people don't like paying $300 to replace their glass when dropping their phone a foot, cell phone makers overall (not just Apple) moved to formulas that are more shatter-resistant but are slightly more scratch prone.

This issue is solved with a $20 screen protector; you can't apply something for $20 that will stop your screen from shattering in a fall.

"Dust particles" will not scratch the glass, but grit like rocks and sand will; current iPhone glass has a Mohs hardness of around 6, meaning fingernails and most metals won't scratch it at all.

It is slightly more prone to scratching than older phones because the glass has been formulated to be much more resistant to shattering if dropped.

Basically, physics dictates you can have hard and brittle or resilient and slightly softer.

I am happy with my phone. I have owned many iPhones and made the horrible mistake of NOT putting a screen protector on my iPhone 6, which after one year of use, was all scratched up. Note all the people on this thread claiming their iPhone 6 or 7 never got a scratch. Poppy ****. I don't need to know whether a new phone can scratch as I have a screen protector installed on my phones the moment they come out of the box, before they are even turned on or activated. If I'm going to spend $1300 on a phone, I figure a $20 -$30 screen protector is a smart investment.

I don't care if you give Apple repeat business. Kind of cut off your nose to spite your face, but that's certainly your choice to make.

Actually, what this proves is you didn't bother to read the thread to see why the new formula may be easier to scratch, but is much harder to break. There are numerous links to articles about this. There is NO DROP in quality at all. All higher end cell phones are now using a harder to break/easier to scratch formula. It has saved people lot's of money by not having to pay huge sums of money to replace a cracked screen. And a simple screen protector was all that would be required to protect the screen from scratches.

That other manufacturers are also using soft glass or that it is deliberate is entirely irrelevant to the fact that for many of us scratch resistance and not shatter resistance is the more important attribute.

Then tell Apple that. Apple, Samsung, LG, Google - All chose hardness as the more important feature. Personally, I'm glad they did. I put a screen protector on my phone before it even got turned on on launch day last September. My phone doesn't have a single scratch on it. But if I do scratch the screen protector, I can easily and inexpensively replace it. The screen itself if broken costs significantly more.

Again, you can certainly provide feedback to Apple directly via this link but don't expect them to change their position on this. And you can always buy a phone from another company, but since they're all using this newer glass, it won't help you much. Use this link --> https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

I honestly don't care if you think I'm right or wrong. The point is the screens are easier to scratch and whether you're happy or not isn't going to change anything. Either put a screen protector on your phone and move on, or complain. But complaining here accomplishes nothing.

Apple isn't here on this user to user only forum. If you think your objection is making a difference here, you're wrong.

Provide feedback to Apple via this link, which is the ONLY way to ensure Apple hears from you --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

i recommend you find a certified Apple Technician to Replace Your Screen for a New One On Your iPhone because Apple Care Only Cover Hardware and liquid Physical Damage does not cover such like scratches or dents on the phone you will need to paid a local technician to replace your screen will not cost to much to replace it and definitely recommend you use a screen protector and a hard case to prevent this from happening again

Tests have shown again and again that the iPhone 11 screen is strong enough to resist materials up to about Mohs 6 (and the iPhone 12 will resist to between 6 and 7.)

Unfortunately, the most common component of sand/gravel debris in pockets and just blowing in the wind is granite, which is between Mohs 6 and 7.

Just for fun:

I know you're upset and you keep expressing that sentiment. But comparing the glass formulation to phones of the past is not a valid comparison. Even the new iPhone 12 has a slightly more durable formulation than iPhone 11. And it too can scratch. It's the tradeoff for glass that is less brittle. Personally, I'd rather my iPhone screen NOT shatter when dropped. And I do, as you likely are aware believe a very affordable screen protector is a good investment.

Ps: Apple doesn't pay employees to mitigate anything in threads. They have forum hosts who as you well know, remove posts which violate the terms of use and they have Community Specialists who answer questions which can be answered with standard Apple responses IF their question is NOT responded to by a forum member in 24 hours. Otherwise, it's just us users having loads of fun with each other!

I don't know where you get the impression you can't put a protector on a phone which has a scratch, but that is absolutely, positively not true. If you want to avoid future scratches, put a protector on your phone. It may not fully hide scratches already there, but future scratches will be greatly reduced, if not completely eliminated.

If advising people that the surest way to protect their very expensive iPhone from scratches is to install a good quality screen protector makes them an apologist, then guilty as charged. That said, anyone who spends this much money on a phone all clad in glass, a material easily scratched, and doesn't protect their screen with a protector need look no further than their closest mirror as to whom to blame.

Actually, with AppleCare+, it makes much more sense to have your screen completely smashed with a "drop" than use your phone as always before (up until iPhone 11 came out) and get scratches not covered by AppleCare+

Smash the screen: AppleCare+ gets you a new phone at reasonable cost. Scratch the screen using your iPhone the same way you've done for past 10+ years with previous models – without a screen protector – and see the resell value & pleasure of using your iPhone plummet.

Business-wise this makes sense for Apple (less AppleCare+ incidents) and for screen protector manufacturers (honestly every iPhone 11 should come with a $20+ protector pre-installed).

Yet customers who use their iPhone 11 the same way they've used every iPhone before end up getting hurt with the "toughest glass ever" on an iPhone.

Go figure. My take is that Apple left something out from their advertising, but that's just me.
