iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

The same happened to my iPhone Pro. I just got it yesterday and kept it in a pocket with nothing else. Less than a day later and there's already a scratch. I didn't have this problem with the iPhone X.

Bought 2 iPhone 11 on Sunday; both scratched by Wednesday without even putting them in pocket. Just returned from Apple Oak Brook store where 2 employees (Johnny and Paul) gave me a lecture on how phones can scratch, how this is the "toughest" screen, and how great Apple products are. When I showed them internet listings, the response was that anyone can put anything on the internet. I asked why people would spend time lying about something -- no response. Just plain arrogance...shame on Apple.

Fun story, chatted with customer support online. Was told I'd have to take it into the store for a service appointment. Go into the store, speak with a representative for literally less than 1 minute without him even looking at the screen, just simply says scratches are cosmetic and not covered.

Obviously a frustrating experience, contacted online customer support again and was told even if the scratch was classified as non-cosmetic it still wouldn't be covered and I would have to pay a repair fee. So 3 weeks into owning my first iPhone I have a nice deep scratch that is clearly noticeable with the phone on and off and have some of the worst customer support I've ever received from any company. Unfortunately I am 10 days past the 14 day return window, otherwise I would be returning this phone without thinking a single second more on it.

The dude took a razor knife and a key to the thing and it did not scratch, so I can't for the life of me see how a pocket could scratch it.

This is day 7 with my iPhone Pro Max, and i have been purposely trying to scratch it with my pockets, pant legs, shirt, gloves, and even picked at it with my finger nail. There is not a scratch to be found yet.

The only thing that makes sense to me it that there must be a bad batch of phones out there.

Still have 7 days to return it, so I'm going to keep trying to scratch it with normal use. I'm not going to do anything different than I do with any other phone.

Thanks for posting your experience.

This shows nothing, Jerry test the screen only with materials with hardness of 5 and 6, nothing in between. Glass is normally around 5.5, but can vary and in gorilla glass case - by a lot. The only information you have from that video is that the iphone pro max glass hardness is over 5 and below or equal to 6. It can be 5.2 or 5.9 - you don't know that from this fast simple test.

Also worth nothing that a material with hardness of 7 will scratch deeper and easier softer glass. This is critical when the pressure is not that strong (like in a normal jeans pocket) as if the glass is softer - it's more likely to scratch in the first place. Stronger glass can come out unscratched or if the pressure is strong enough - will be less scratched. Physics.

As has been pointed out several times, this is faulty reasoning. Feldspar and quartz are the two most abundant minerals on the planet, are ubiquitous in everyone's environment and will scratch essentially every smartphone screen on the market.

Positing that something which is by definition softer and less common is responsible for scratching everyone's iPhone 11s when they are constantly exposed to these harder and more common substances is statistically impossible.

Oh, by the way, JerryRigEverything also attempted to scratch an iPhone 11 with a razor blade, which is approximately Mohs 5.5, and couldn't. In contrast, a razor blade did scratch iPhone 6S and earlier models (despite all the claims on here that "my iPhone 11 scratches more easily than my iPhone 6/6S").

Exactly!!!

I love how people think there’s NO problem just because THEY haven’t experienced the problem!

I found this thread by accident while trying to figure out how I can repair the excessive scratches on my iPhone 11 screen received after just 1 week after being in my pocket with one single key. It’s ridiculous. i’ve had several Jen rations of iPhone and never ever had a problem like this.

Keys cannot scratch your iPhone. They are typically made from metal that is too soft. Although one wonders why you would would put them together in the first place? I know a kitchen knife will not scratch my iPhone screen, but I'm not going to start hacking at it just to prove it to you (that's what YouTube videos are for).

It seems pretty obvious that there’s a batch of bad screens out there. Even apple influencers such as iJustine and Marques Brownlee commented on their 11 Pro screens getting scratched very easily (watch the 3 weeks with iPhone 11 video that they made together).

There is no evidence of this at all. And that video doesn't conclude that. If one looks across social media as a whole, as opposed to just this thread, the number of mentions of scratched iPhones exactly equals the mentions of scratched Galaxy phones, and is one-eight the mentions of scratched Pixel phones (which makes sense, since the back glass of the current Pixels is demonstrably more scratch prone in JerryRigEverything's videos). I previously posted this data.

100+ pages looks like good evidence that problem exists. Could you find similar thread about any other iPhone model?

The only reason this thread continues to exist is because it was mentioned by Tom's Guide a month ago, and people who have accidentally had their iPhones scratched by a bit of sand Google that article or a few other articles based on it and come here to complain about something that happens to every smartphone on the market.

The evidence that there is NOT a problem with excessive scratching is overwhelming to someone who can think about it rationally.

Most other devices on the market do not have a single, manufacturer-related webpage where people can reach out to try and get help with their issues.

There are Samsung forums, to name one brand, but there are several of those distributed across different geographic areas where people are complaining about scratches on their Samsung Galaxy models. (Ironically many are about the S10 which comes with a screen protector from the factory, which some do not like and remove, and complain shortly thereafter that their new naked screen now has scratches.)

Likewise there are long threads complaining about screen scratching with other phones, up to and including the brand new Google Pixel 4.

If you want to go by post count, if you reduce the number of posts here to eliminate responses from people trying to help and reduce the total further by counting only posts from unique users complaining of issues, the number of posters falls within the realm of average for newer smart phones with strong glass screens (specifically, Gorilla Glass 6 for Androids.)

So what you are saying is that we should wait for such incidents to be over before purchasing a new device. Or should Apple replace these few faulty screens? Also not sure why compare Apple with Samsung or a PC with MacBook. Different products, different clientele, different expectations. Finally, I have yet to meet someone who loves to spend time complaining on a forum when no problem exists. Like most people on this forum, we have owned iPhone 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, X, 11. This is our first time complaining … did not experience this problem before.
