iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

The same happened to my iPhone Pro. I just got it yesterday and kept it in a pocket with nothing else. Less than a day later and there's already a scratch. I didn't have this problem with the iPhone X.

If you are within the first 14 days return the phone for refund. If you have owned the phone longer than 14 days, put a screen protector on the phone. Apple is not replacing these phones for cosmetic reasons. If you purchased AppleCare+ when you purchased the phone, use one of your screen replacements for $29. If you did not purchase AppleCare+ pay $199 for a new screen (then put a screen protector on your phone).

Most of these screens are not faulty, people damaged them when they came into contact with something abrasive.

There are a few that were damaged during manufacturing, and those have been replaced (and will continue to be so) as would devices subject to any actual manufacturing defect.

The photos of damage that have been posted all clearly show where something abrasive scratched the screen, often when a phone was placed into or removed from a pocket, as they show a long continuous curved scratch or scratches.

It does not matter whether you experienced an issue before; the fact that you could hit a sign post at 10 MPH in a 1955 Chevy does not mean when you cause $10,000 in damage doing the same in a 2020 Porsche that the latter is defective.

You can choose to use a screen protector or not, but if you choose not to, you may inadvertently cause cosmetic damage.

If that is an issue for you, return your iPhone if you can; if not, sell your iPhone as used and purchase a different device - but beware that most newer phones suffer from the same issue. I've posted links before showing similar complaints lodged against similar flagship Android phones, including the at this point mere weeks-old Google Pixel 4.

If you felt your old iPhone was more rugged, sell your new one, buy a used or refurbished iPhone of the model you prefer and pocket the likely substantial price differential.

People not complaining before does not mean an issue did not exist, and quite frankly it doesn't matter if it did or not.

People were less aware of Apple Support Discussions in the past, and iPhones sell in larger numbers now, making the issue seem "worse."

Regardless, this is the product. If you are unhappy, return it if you can, sell it as used if you cannot and purchase something else.

Ok. Today is day 8 with my iPhone 11 Pro Max, and still not a scratch to be found. It still looks brand new.

I put it in my pocket with my keys and my wallet, I rubbed my key back and forth against the screen, I did 2 miles of walk run intervals with it bouncing around in my pocket, and vigorously rubbed it on my shirt and pant leg to wipe finger prints off.

I was at BestBuy today to get a pair of Powerbeats Pro's headphones, and was looking at the iPhone 11 Pro display models. The screens where all marked up from people looking at them so I rubbed them both clean and inspected them. they had no scratches on them, so I put them against each other screen to screen and rubbed them together. Then I inspected them again and they still had no scratches.

I am not saying that this entire thread is BS, but I cannot reproduce this problem according to what people are saying about their phones getting scratched from their pockets and keys. And according to some posts that I have read, it's like their phones where scratched by just air hitting it.

This makes absolutely no sense to me other than there may be some defective phones out there along with a combination of some people maybe not being entirely truthful about their scratches.

Also, some people simply may not know that even a grain of salt or sugar on a table could easily scratch any phone screen, or some grains of hard material in their pocket could do the same.

I am not saying that nobody has a legitimate issue, but I am saying that I can not reproduce any scratch issues "so far" with my normal use. Also, normal use may have different meanings to different people.

Reddit's iPhone subred has 1.9 million members. And no ongoing discussion of iPhone 11 scratches. The same for Instagram, Twitter, Facebook groups and blogs. Most of the posts on Twitter were actually posted from Android devices, which makes one wonder about their veracity. I've posted the analytics before. But strangely this thread continues...

It's pretty clear that a lot of the complaints in this thread are fake, using similar poor English grammar and repetitive word usage (an Apple ID is available to anyone, even if you don't have an iPhone). A waste of the poster's time it would appear, since the rest of the world is ignoring them.

My only hope is the few people on here that are posting common sense are providing a public service to anyone who happens to find this thread while thinking about buying a new iPhone or wonders if the scratch they got on their new iPhone is somehow not a normal occurrence.

The new iPhones are not any more scratch prone than previous models (or their Galaxy or Pixel competitors).

No, it’s not fake. I love apple, have MacBook Pro’s and have had all generations of iPhones since launch. All treated the same way, in my pocket without screen protector (and obviously nothing else in the pocket). With the iPhone 11 Pro I had multiple scratches within the first week, have never had a scratch previously on any generation. Also, even huge Apple influencers Marques Brownlee and iJustine mentioned that they both had noticed this problem in the 3 weeks with iPhone 11 video that they made together.

It's discretionary and I have read where a couple people were able to exercise one of their replacements for this. Personally, it would simply make more sense to have Apple install the Belkin iON Infused Glass Screen Protector for $39 and be done with this.

I appreciate your posts (and those of the others who have not had scratches), because I (and no doubt others) have been wondering how serious and widespread this issue is before buying. You may recall from one of my replies above that I did a similar test, but abbreviated. I plan to try one out more earnestly now.

One thing about your Best Buy display model observation, however: I wonder if those models were very new, because I've looked at many iPhone 11 and 11 Pro display units in three different Apple Stores, and they were all or nearly all trashed. I did as you did and carefully wiped off the grime. What was left was tons of scratches. I don't remember if that's normal for two-month-old display units—maybe it is. I know people really abuse the displays. But there are certainly very scratched.

It really matters little if the display models are scratched, as they are subject to a lot of abuse.

However, while display models have may have some scratches, were they really as fragile as many here are claiming, their displays would be virtually opaque. For example, most Apple Stores have a long enough cord on the display phones to allow them to be placed in a pocket to check for fit, so they are zipping in and out of several sets of (abrasive) pockets all day.

Dear kpfoley and others,

I‘m wondering what qualifies you to presume that our complaints would be fake. „Bad english grammar“ can‘t be an indication as many of the people complaining here are not from the USA, just like me.

I‘m very happy for you if your phones don‘t show the issue we complain about - but that doesn‘t mean that there is not an issue.

It doesn‘t help us if you again and again tell us that we could return it or install a screen protector. Installing a screen protector won‘t remove the already existing scratches, you understand?

I really wonder what your mission is.

Are you working for Apple or are you such a great Apple fan that you must defend it compulsively? I like Apple too and I was happy with lots of devices before - but now I have an issue with a phone I bought for 1250€ and I want Apple at least to give a statement about that.

Sorry, but some of you simply behave in a very very arrogant way. Think about it.

Nov 17, 2019 3:14 AM in response to NikH96

I am sorry and I hope people are not taking any of my posts the wrong way.

I read a lot of these posts before purchasing my phone, and when they told me at the xfinity store that I could return it within 14 days if it started having this issue, I thought it would be a good opportunity to put it through normal use testing and maybe be helpful to this thread in posting my experience.

Although I did mention that some people may not be being truthful about there scratches, I don't think I accused any individual about anything. I was just making a point that there may be some people that are not being truthful.

I am extremely puzzled by this and am just trying to be helpful.
