iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

The same happened to my iPhone Pro. I just got it yesterday and kept it in a pocket with nothing else. Less than a day later and there's already a scratch. I didn't have this problem with the iPhone X.

Dearest Valentine. Indeed I saw the ad you are likely referring to. In fact, I saw it before I got my phone. And still, I put a screen protector on my phone before it was even turned on. I paid cash for my phone. The very minimal expense for a screen protector, which can be replaced if need be, seemed a VERY small expense in relation to the cost of the phone and it's why my phone as NO scratches now after 3 months of owning it.

I believe you more than mr Williams. Also you said you have som addiction to keep your devices away from any danger. So I’m totally believe you are ok and away from scratches. We are not that happy. And... I got phone which I’m going to keep on pocket and without protector. Just like it was advertised by Apple. Do t you think it is honest?

Dec 11, 2019 11:59 AM in response to valentine256

Apple at no time advertised the phone as scratch proof. They said correctly so, the phone is made with tougher glass. So no, I don't think they were dishonest. Glass scratches, plain and simple. Pants pockets can and usually do contain very small particles of sand. Sand scratches glass. Knives, razors, keys won't scratch an iPhone. But sand, oh my yes, can certainly scratch an iphone.

It's anyone choice to not use a screen protector. But in doing so, they take a calculated risk and if their phone get's scratches, it get's scratches.

That's why it's valuable to read the Verge article. To make glass more durable, which means less likely to break when dropped, it is more difficult to make that glass harder to scratch. Thus tougher glass, while less likely to shatter as clearly evidenced by the virtually non-existent threads about broken screens on the new phones, can be scratched, as evidenced by this thread.

More durable does not necessarily mean that it is more resistant to breaking when dropped. In fact, that is not an obvious interpretation at all. Durability is usually used to express resistance to wear within normal operating parameters and specifically would exclude catastrophic events such as being dropped or rolled over by a steam roller. It's normal for a phone's screen to come into contact with a variety of things and resistance to scratching in normal use and handling is a major factor in most people's definition of durability.

I'd read the article. Multiple times. It is not Apple's prerogative to tell users what attributes are most important to them. Quality and durability are defined in the eyes of the consumer, full stop.

Apple is clearly trying to increase their margins on apple care by defining scratches as uncovered cosmetic damage and increasing the drop resistance of the glass. However this does not align with what matters to many customers, myself included.

LOL is all I can say. Apple makes the product, which they have decided benefits more from being less susceptible to breaking than scratching. You the consumer have options, including not purchasing the product. But be advised, the other high end cell phone makers, including, but not limited to Samsung use the same glass on their screens. Scratches have ALWAYS been considered cosmetic damage by Apple. This isn't new.

When you create your own company to manufacture and sell cell phones, you can make the decision that you like. I'm happy Apple chose to use glass which is harder to break. For me, there are simple, inexpensive options I can use to protect my screen from scratches. A screen protector costs as little $10. If you crack your screen on iPhone 11 Pro Max, and you don't have AppleCare+, a replacement screen costs $329 ($29 with AppleCare+). You do the math which protects the consumer more.

I LOL at your LOL. There is no way the glass on this thing is of a remotely comparable hardness to Gorilla Glass of any iteration nor to plain glass, it is straight up very soft. They may have succeeded in making glass that is flexible (yet to be tested) but failed to make it even remotely scratch resistant, at least for some significant proportion of the production if not in all. I predict when all this settles down this will be proven beyond a doubt. My phone was scratched badly within 24 hrs of receiving it, noticed when putting on my screen protector the next day having actually used its packaging to transport it to and from home for fear of scratching it. I won't try to replace the screen, I'd rather wait until a solution is found because I don't want to buy a new screen that has the same problem (I have apple care but it doesn't apply) and I believe there will have to be one because this level of softness is not acceptable.

We can just agree to disagree. Go out to Youtube and see many of the drop tests, which validate that this years crop of new phones are harder to crack from drops, which just a couple years ago would have resulted in cracked screens. The almost complete lack of threads about people cracking their screens, now three months in since release, further corroborates this too.

Apple's ad for the iPhone 11 seems to very specifically advertise that it is a durable phone by saying it is "ready for action". Within the first 35 seconds of the ad the phone is placed in a pocket, screen down on a car seat and falling on the floor between the seats, a cat knocks it to the floor, and it is jostled around in a purse with a bunch of other stuff. My iPhone was treated much more carefully vs. the ad that shows more aggressive use. No case or screen protector used in the ad! That being said, I have always used case, but never though I needed a screen protector.

I have read a lot of this thread and tried to read past the fighting to get some possible answers to my questions. I have a pro max and put a protector on it immediately in the store. Got it a couple weeks ago. I already cracked the protector. Yeah me for making the decision to protect it. Unfortunately, I cannot get another protector for a few days and am concerned about scratching it up. I do have applecare+ but would like to avoid the possibility of having to get the thing fixed and really hate looking at scratches. It stinks after so many generations of iphones that problems like this are happening but its safe to say every generation of future iphones are going to have issues of some sort.

My question. Is there anyone on here, in the USA, that bought a pro max in the last couple of weeks have scratches, with normal use? Assuming no protector has been applied?

I believe it is possible the first batches of phones had screen scratching issues and quite possible Apple quietly addressed the problem in manufacturing. I'm guessing changing the screen material or manufacturing process wouldn't be easy to do in just a month or two but its also possible Apple has a handle on it and can turn it on a dime.

I'm wondering if I should just leave the thing at home, swap out the sim card to my old Android, until I can get a protector on it?

Sounds drastic but if I cannot live without it for a few days then I have bigger problems than a scratched screen.

My biggest question is why you're on a forum defending Apple when people are just complaining about using their phones how they always did. Even if you believe what you seem to believe, it seems like a waste of time.

Just because some iPhone 11s that were produced don't exhibit this behavior doesn't mean that others (possibly manufactured in a different batch) do. Just because some users choose to put screen protectors doesn't mean that others have to make the same decisions.

The end result here is that this phone, despite claims of being "the best iPhone ever", is not performing in a way that is completely reasonable to expect from an electronic device that costs $700+. This is especially true given the track record of every previous model in the same product line not scratching when put into a pocket and pulled out several thousands times (as is normal for a cell phone).
