WatchOS 6 workout app now always displays workout metrics on reactivation of display

When using my series 4 Apple Watch while working out, the new watchOS 6 update altered Apple’s workout app to where now when the display shuts off, no matter what was last on the screen, when the display activates again it returns to the metric screen of the workout app (as opposed to say the music screen within the workout app). I change my music/volume frequently while working out and as my hands get sweatier while working out it becomes increasingly difficult to swipe left to return to the music screen within the workout app. The previous watchOS would always return to the last used screen within the workout app so I could simply change songs with a lift of the wrist and tap. Is this a bug within the new watchOS or is there a way to have the music always appear when the display reactivates when working out?

Same issue here, and I preferred it the old way, too.

I also change volume and/or songs often while working out. This is happening to me on an Apple Watch 5, so it's definitely WatchOS 6 related.

What's funny is... in the Watch's Settings/General/Wake Screen scroll all the way down and there's settings for "Return to last session app" with the description that "When enabled the app will return as long as it is in session." The Workout App is turned on by default.

So I figured ah ha!, that's why it's always defaulting back to the Workout App. But nope... I turned it off and it still does. I also turned ON Music and Now Playing, but still the same. The watch just always upon wake goes to the Workout App.

Very perplexing, especially when it seems they gave you the ability with the above setting to change it.
