iOS 13 Apple Music and BMW's iDrive problems

Hello I have a problem and was wondering if anyone else experience this:

I have a BMW with an iDrive media system. Before updating to iOS 13, it worked with my iPhone perfectly, over the bluetooth. However, after updating, I can't control the media playback (using the steering wheel) when I'm playing songs from A LOCAL PLAYLIST! If I play songs from an album or my whole songs library, controls work perfect. Also, if I play any online playlists (e.g. Pure Party playlist in Apple music) it works perfectly. There is something wrong about how the playback of LOCAL Apple Music playlists is being managed in iOS 13..

I have tried resetting (bluetooth and complete system restore) my phone and my car. I have also tried it with iPhone X and Xs Max and both had the same behaviour.

Devices to reproduce it:

BMW with an iDrive 4.0 system

iPhone X with iOS 13.1.1 (same issue persists with an iPhone Xs Max with iOS 13.1.1)

Apple Music

Steps to reproduce it:

1. Connect car's bluetooth to iPhone.

2. Play any song of any playlist.

3. Try to control the music playback (by choosing which song to play next)

4. System tries to skip to the selected song (by displaying it's playing it for a brief second, but not changing the sound), but is not able to.

I have the same issue and it’s driving me crazy. Everything was working perfectly on iOS13 though. The issue started after updating to 13.1 and it still persists with 13.1.1. I also tried a Mercedes and the issue is also present. The problem has to do with iOS13.1

This is a huge functionality issue that Apple has to address. I’ve submitted to bug reports and encourage you to do the same. Hopefully this would get fixed with the next update.

I have a Mercedes C Class 2011 and use my iphone 8 or 6 through Command.

In the last few months, I have found that changing tracks on a playlist is temperamental; it will play, but if you want to choose another song, it shows the track you want to listen to for a few seconds, but then it reverts back to what is currently playing.

I can fast forward a song to get to the next track, or search the playlist with the controller and try and play the song I want that way, although this doesn't always work.

This is very annoying.

I also have this issue. Have been on the phone with geniuses from both Apple and BMW. Generally the attitude has been apathetic. Either “it’s the first we’ve heard” or “it’s a known issue and we’ll get around to it”. BMW did say they’re close to offering free CarPlay for those affected but that’s not the solution. There’s a reason we pay extra money for an idrive. I’m now on my second idrive system. Really frustrating.

Just to mention the following scenario I have with my 3 years old BMW X1:

First I had 2.5years my iPhone 8 256GB with latest iOS 13.3. Never any problem with all apps in Car Play

Just bought this Monday an iPhone 11 Pro Max 256GB and used same backup and configuration from my iPhone 8. Same user everything identical. But now every 1-2 seconds dropouts in Spotify, Radioplayer, Apple Music. Almost everything. Be by

@Apple: this is definitely a general hardware problem with your iPhone 11Pro Max (e.g. chipset et all)
