iOS 13 Apple Music and BMW's iDrive problems

Hello I have a problem and was wondering if anyone else experience this:

I have a BMW with an iDrive media system. Before updating to iOS 13, it worked with my iPhone perfectly, over the bluetooth. However, after updating, I can't control the media playback (using the steering wheel) when I'm playing songs from A LOCAL PLAYLIST! If I play songs from an album or my whole songs library, controls work perfect. Also, if I play any online playlists (e.g. Pure Party playlist in Apple music) it works perfectly. There is something wrong about how the playback of LOCAL Apple Music playlists is being managed in iOS 13..

I have tried resetting (bluetooth and complete system restore) my phone and my car. I have also tried it with iPhone X and Xs Max and both had the same behaviour.

Devices to reproduce it:

BMW with an iDrive 4.0 system

iPhone X with iOS 13.1.1 (same issue persists with an iPhone Xs Max with iOS 13.1.1)

Apple Music

Steps to reproduce it:

1. Connect car's bluetooth to iPhone.

2. Play any song of any playlist.

3. Try to control the music playback (by choosing which song to play next)

4. System tries to skip to the selected song (by displaying it's playing it for a brief second, but not changing the sound), but is not able to.

I have the same issue and it’s driving me crazy. Everything was working perfectly on iOS13 though. The issue started after updating to 13.1 and it still persists with 13.1.1. I also tried a Mercedes and the issue is also present. The problem has to do with iOS13.1

This is a huge functionality issue that Apple has to address. I’ve submitted to bug reports and encourage you to do the same. Hopefully this would get fixed with the next update.

I don’t think the fix must be provided by Bmw, but Apple. In my case next and previous works. What doesn’t work (at least in my case) is selecting a different track beside the next or previous one from the current playlist. The issue has an ~80% occurence in my case, so there are moments when it works. From the above comments, the issue happens with NBT and NBT Evo.

Please note that I have a found a strange but effective work around ....for the ones owning an Apple watch.

Instead of starting to play the playlist from your BMW or from the iPhone "Music" app, you can go in the "Music" app of the Apple Watch, connect to your iPhone, enumerates the playlists ...and start to play it from there. Then, strangely, the functionality works perfectly: if you start playing the list as such, you can ehn browse and select any track of the playlist from the steering wheel, of your BMW as it used to be before 13.1 upgrade.

I’m having the same issue! Ive even just finished restoring my iPhone which was an absolute pain!! and the problem is still there.

When I upgraded to iOS 12 I had an issue where my playlists would only show the first 100 songs and then show the rest as ‘Track~101’. Now I’m on 13.1.1 I can’t even change songs within a playlist!! So f’in annoying and dangerous having to reach for my iPhone each time. This is definitely an Apple problem and nothing to do with BMW.

I’m using an IPhone 7 Plus 13.1.1 and a 2018 F15 BMW X5 with iDrive 6 NBT Evo

Had the same problem - Apple needed at least 5 months to fix the bluetooth problem with iOS 12. The best thing you can do is to downgrade to iOS 12.4.1 - it's still being signed - but you have to be quick!! If you have no iOS Backup - just follow these instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ph5MGBeClv8&t=209s

(Edit)

I also downgraded and everything works fine now. I am now waiting at least a couple of weeks before I finally upgrade to iOS 13.

I have reported this to Apple.

I have the issue that when I connect via USB the iPhone is not detected, however if I connect an iPhone running iOS12.4.2 and allow it to start playing music, disconnect it, then connect my iPhone running 13.1.1 to the USB it works fine.

When I disconnect the 13.1.1. iPhone it will not reconnect until the iPhone running 12.4.2 has been connected and disconnected.

Only found this bizarre sequence of events out as my wife's phone has the earlier iOS and I wanted to rule out a lead issue in the car!!

I have the exact same issue with Audi MMI, I when playing from my entire songs library it works fine, I can select specific songs normally and play from the steering wheel and controls centre console, however when in a playlist it doesn’t let me select specific songs, I can skip songs onto the next, but I can’t scroll through the playlist and select a specific song to play after the first one. My partners phone which isn’t on iOS13 yet works fine however, so I know it’s an iOS problem. Apple need to fix ASAP.

Same type of issues that BMW (and not only) had in 2016 with the IPhone 7 - https://www.macrumors.com/2016/09/29/iphone-7-bmw-bluetooth-audio-issues/ -.

Apple response today : "Have no idea of what you talking about, just call BMW". BMW response : "If it worked before the Apple update, why are you calling me?".

And round and around we go.

My question will be : NOBODY? I mean NOBODY at Apple drives a BMW? Are you serious??? What are they? Amish? Horses and bicycles?

Apple, stop playing the "i don't know game", take some responsibility and fix this!

Oh, and if you guys need a BMW in case all of you ride horses, please contact me and i'll make my vehicle available!
