iOS 13 Apple Music and BMW's iDrive problems

Hello I have a problem and was wondering if anyone else experience this:

I have a BMW with an iDrive media system. Before updating to iOS 13, it worked with my iPhone perfectly, over the bluetooth. However, after updating, I can't control the media playback (using the steering wheel) when I'm playing songs from A LOCAL PLAYLIST! If I play songs from an album or my whole songs library, controls work perfect. Also, if I play any online playlists (e.g. Pure Party playlist in Apple music) it works perfectly. There is something wrong about how the playback of LOCAL Apple Music playlists is being managed in iOS 13..

I have tried resetting (bluetooth and complete system restore) my phone and my car. I have also tried it with iPhone X and Xs Max and both had the same behaviour.

Devices to reproduce it:

BMW with an iDrive 4.0 system

iPhone X with iOS 13.1.1 (same issue persists with an iPhone Xs Max with iOS 13.1.1)

Apple Music

Steps to reproduce it:

1. Connect car's bluetooth to iPhone.

2. Play any song of any playlist.

3. Try to control the music playback (by choosing which song to play next)

4. System tries to skip to the selected song (by displaying it's playing it for a brief second, but not changing the sound), but is not able to.

I have the same issue and it’s driving me crazy. Everything was working perfectly on iOS13 though. The issue started after updating to 13.1 and it still persists with 13.1.1. I also tried a Mercedes and the issue is also present. The problem has to do with iOS13.1

This is a huge functionality issue that Apple has to address. I’ve submitted to bug reports and encourage you to do the same. Hopefully this would get fixed with the next update.

Dear all,

unfortunately I need to join that club.

For me it’s my 2014 Audi S3 with MMI HIGH and Audi Media Interface.

I tested it on iPhone X and iPhone 6s applying iOS 13.1, 13.1.1, 13.1.2 and in the moment iOS 13.2 beta 1.

No improvement at all.

Actually I am pretty happy I am not an boundary condition and I am not alone.

I even started to think about to change my habits and stop using my “favorites” playlist and delete all tracks which are not my favorites to be able to play all songs. Even I started to download podcasts since podcast is working fine for the moment.

On my drive home today I got side swiped from a stolen vehicle fleeing the scene, I incurred heavy damage. But to be honest that was a more livid about pressing my centre dial 83 times to listen to my mutha f@ckin jam.

Same Audio Track Selection Issue 2014 BMW 3 Series.

I can advance or move back only one track at a time, requiring a manual action for ever single track change on my personal playlists on Apple Music. This occurs on both my steering wheel control and centre dial, extremely inconvenient and painfully annoying.

Please fix before I get my ride back:)

That's what I did, downgraded to iOS 13.0. You can restore then from your iTunes backup (iCloud backup does not work as it forces you to upgrade back to the latest available version). There's a link to the video that describes the downgrade process in detail somewhere in the beginning of this thread.

Hi everyone, have the same issue with a brand new BMW X1 and Iphone X running iOS 13.1.2. I solved the problem by making a downgrade to iOS 13.0. It is possible without any data/settings lost with a third part software. It's not free but in a few minutes you are ready without any restore or data loss. I'm not sure I can write here the name of this software... If someone is interested can reply me. Meanwhile waiting for some Apple's update. I also called Apple support and talked with a 2nd level operator. She told me She'would have taken infos and suddenly called me but no one re-called. I also left a message in her voice mail but nothing happened. I'm very disappointed by Apple support.

Reading through the comments here and judging by the number of affected vehicle brands, it is obvious that Apple have modified some API controls that allows vehicles to interact with the playlist.

Anyone who is affected by this and haven't commented on this post, please do so, so that Apple are aware of the number of people this issue has impacted.

Please re-tweet, reply to or add to the tweet, like the tweet and maybe add #IOS13 and some other hash-tags.

My Twitter is NYYScott.

Maybe we'll get an official Apple response this way.

I spoke to support and all they could tell me was that if the issue is that big, that Apple must know about it.

I asked for a defect number or if she had some sort of evidence that suggests that this was being looked at or slated for a release. Nope - just a hunch, but they don't have anything in their system at support that tells them one way or another.

I tweeted Apple Support a few days ago all they did was schedule a phone call with me and even though I told them already I restored iPhone, restored settings, changed cables, tried Bluetooth, tried CarPlay, tried different cars and cars from different manufacturers the woman on the phone call tried to get me to reinstall iOS 13.1.2 and I refused to because I was at work and restoring from a back up would take ages we were going around in circles so I gave up.

I guess that’s just how it works with first line support in any company. They need to suggest every possibility to confirm that there are no other solution before escalating. Let’s just hope that someone from Apple would take the initiative and try it themselves in their own vehicle.

I have submitted my findings too. I have an older iPhone 6s which is running 12.0 and it works perfectly so it’s a 13.0 and after updates issue. I can also tell you this is the same in my friends Mini and my other friends Mercedes C class, so over to you Mr Apple.

Funny thing is don’t tell me some executive from Apple hasn’t got free Apple Music and a BMW and hasn’t suffered the same crap we are all having, step up to the plate Apple and deal with it.

Its an issue and a big one, you are asking us to pay £9.99 or $9.99 and you’re failing us, this is breach of contract to supply us with a working functional system.

This is damaging to your business, always remember Steve Jobs....look after the customer, it will look after your business......over to you APPLE, do Mr Jobs proud.

I too am facing this issue on my Mercedes CLC since updating my iPhone X from iOS 12 to iOS 13. When connecting my phone to the car via Bluetooth I am unable to change song using the car’s controls when listening any playlist on the iPhone Music app. This issue seems to be specific to playlists as the controls work to change song when my main library is playing.

I would encourage all users facing this issue to report this to Apple as this seems to be widespread and we really do need a fix!
