iOS 13 Apple Music and BMW's iDrive problems

Hello I have a problem and was wondering if anyone else experience this:

I have a BMW with an iDrive media system. Before updating to iOS 13, it worked with my iPhone perfectly, over the bluetooth. However, after updating, I can't control the media playback (using the steering wheel) when I'm playing songs from A LOCAL PLAYLIST! If I play songs from an album or my whole songs library, controls work perfect. Also, if I play any online playlists (e.g. Pure Party playlist in Apple music) it works perfectly. There is something wrong about how the playback of LOCAL Apple Music playlists is being managed in iOS 13..

I have tried resetting (bluetooth and complete system restore) my phone and my car. I have also tried it with iPhone X and Xs Max and both had the same behaviour.

Devices to reproduce it:

BMW with an iDrive 4.0 system

iPhone X with iOS 13.1.1 (same issue persists with an iPhone Xs Max with iOS 13.1.1)

Apple Music

Steps to reproduce it:

1. Connect car's bluetooth to iPhone.

2. Play any song of any playlist.

3. Try to control the music playback (by choosing which song to play next)

4. System tries to skip to the selected song (by displaying it's playing it for a brief second, but not changing the sound), but is not able to.

I have the same issue and it’s driving me crazy. Everything was working perfectly on iOS13 though. The issue started after updating to 13.1 and it still persists with 13.1.1. I also tried a Mercedes and the issue is also present. The problem has to do with iOS13.1

This is a huge functionality issue that Apple has to address. I’ve submitted to bug reports and encourage you to do the same. Hopefully this would get fixed with the next update.

I spoke to Apple this morning.

Level 1 tech who I spoke to started to go down the road of a software update on my X5.

I stopped her and told her that there are people who have already noted that this is not just on BMWs, but also on branded vehicles.

Then I told her that I would at least like some comfort that Apple is actively looking into this.

She tried to assure me of this, but there was not evidence such as a defect ID in the Apple systems or some case log, etc.

I asked to escalate this issue since there are a lot of threads out there regarding this issue.

She passed me to a supervisor who tried to tell me that she's sure there's someone from Apple looking into it.

I asked her how she knows for sure or if some assurance in writing would be provided to the post?

I mean - it doesn't look like there is an Apple entry anywhere in this thread. How would anyone know that Apple is working on this actively unless they issue a statement, an internal ticket number or defect assigned to a technician, none of which Apple has provided.

The supervisor couldn't provide any proof or answer to my question of how she knows they're working on it, just that "they must be working on it if there are so many complaints".

I asked how we know that our comments are being looked at and not just falling on deaf ears.

There are no answers given.

It's truly terrible support on Apple's part.

We should have a ticket number with status updates telling us that this has truly been identified as a defect, that is being worked on, that it is slated for an upcoming release, etc.

Surely, some Apple executive must have a new iPhone and drive a BMW, right? WTF?!?!?!?

Hi All,

I was trying again using iPhone 7 and found following temporary solution: with my BMW idrive or steering wheel I only can select playlists BUT by using the buttons forward/back of central radio console, near the favorite buttons, it was possible to change songs — press twice to go back !!! Seems to be a mismatch of Apple and not of BMW

Hi All,

Same issue on my 17 plate M2 running the latest software & IOS 13.1.2 on an iPhone X. Its only the playlists that seems to be the issue and the forward/back buttons on the centre console are the only ways to skip the tracks. Apple didn’t really want to know and BMW have said they will look into the issue but it will most likely need to be an Apple fix in another software update.

Hope it gets sorted soon as it’s really frustrating! (P.s. don’t waste your time resetting your phone/connection etc, it doesn’t help!)

I discovered something on my 2016 Hyundai while out at lunch because I'm a programmer myself and have an innate need to analyze things. If I use the BACK toggle on my steering wheel and click it 5 times I move FORWARD in the playlist. After track 5 I have to click it 10 times. After track 10 I have to click it 20 times. After track 15 I have to click it 25 times. That's as far as I went with it. My actual forward toggle does nothing still.

There's definitely a pattern there. I'm pretty sure some Apple developer messed up an incrementation pointer or something.

yup, i completely agree with goran_s. i too have HUD and i use that avenue to see and select the song i want to listen to. Now it is broken. WTF. Now, i have to unlock the phone, open apple music, find my playlist, find the song i want to listen to and select it.

I have opened a case with apple and they are scheduled to call me at 1800hrs pacific time today to see if they can resolve it. i really doubt it they can resolve it without an update to fix this issue.

Wow! I’ve probably spent around a month trying to establish the cause of this issue and assumed it was just me! First I though it was my idrive (version 5 2016) but after updating the firmware on my idrive I was finally able to select any song from the wheel selector on the steering wheel.

However this was short lived as I had enrolled into the iOS 13 beta program with auto updates. Soon enough the wheel selector on my 6 series GC become nothing more than a device to show what’s track is next on the HUD.

As MeloMan and other have discovered running a playlist online (i.e not downloaded) works fine but I don’t have unlimited data. Also any album regardless of it being downloaded on your device also works fine! (but who does that now)

Numerous resets of both idrive and of iOS failed to deliver.

Interestingly if you select “downloaded songs” form Apple Music and then select Albums which in my case was “today’s hits” playlist it works. Obviously as I have nothing else downloaded and it’s being selected under album and your using your phone to do this.

Weirdly if you press the wheel selector on the steering wheel of the current song it in fact plays it again. So clearly it partially functioning.

Coming for a engineering background I agree with Webhamster that it’s some pointer issue but I sense it’s a waiting game, either Apple fixes this issue, as it’s even affecting iPhone 11 users or bmw and other manufacturers are provided with the fix by Apple?

Glad to see it’s not me - phew!
