iOS 13 Apple Music and BMW's iDrive problems

Hello I have a problem and was wondering if anyone else experience this:

I have a BMW with an iDrive media system. Before updating to iOS 13, it worked with my iPhone perfectly, over the bluetooth. However, after updating, I can't control the media playback (using the steering wheel) when I'm playing songs from A LOCAL PLAYLIST! If I play songs from an album or my whole songs library, controls work perfect. Also, if I play any online playlists (e.g. Pure Party playlist in Apple music) it works perfectly. There is something wrong about how the playback of LOCAL Apple Music playlists is being managed in iOS 13..

I have tried resetting (bluetooth and complete system restore) my phone and my car. I have also tried it with iPhone X and Xs Max and both had the same behaviour.

Devices to reproduce it:

BMW with an iDrive 4.0 system

iPhone X with iOS 13.1.1 (same issue persists with an iPhone Xs Max with iOS 13.1.1)

Apple Music

Steps to reproduce it:

1. Connect car's bluetooth to iPhone.

2. Play any song of any playlist.

3. Try to control the music playback (by choosing which song to play next)

4. System tries to skip to the selected song (by displaying it's playing it for a brief second, but not changing the sound), but is not able to.

iPhone XS Max

Read the comments. It clearly says it’s solved in iOS 13.2 Beta 3. So, install that or wait for the official release of iOS 13.2. It should be out before the end of this month.

I’m having the same issue! Ive even just finished restoring my iPhone which was an absolute pain!! and the problem is still there.

When I upgraded to iOS 12 I had an issue where my playlists would only show the first 100 songs and then show the rest as ‘Track~101’. Now I’m on 13.1.1 I can’t even change songs within a playlist!! So f’in annoying and dangerous having to reach for my iPhone each time. This is definitely an Apple problem and nothing to do with BMW.

I’m using an IPhone 7 Plus 13.1.1 and a 2018 F15 BMW X5 with iDrive 6 NBT Evo

I have the exact same issue with Audi MMI, I when playing from my entire songs library it works fine, I can select specific songs normally and play from the steering wheel and controls centre console, however when in a playlist it doesn’t let me select specific songs, I can skip songs onto the next, but I can’t scroll through the playlist and select a specific song to play after the first one. My partners phone which isn’t on iOS13 yet works fine however, so I know it’s an iOS problem. Apple need to fix ASAP.

This is 100% Apple's problem and not BMW. Is everyone supposed to flash their cars? The issue is present in my 2016 Hyundai Sonata. Are we all supposed to pester every car manufacturer to fix Apple's mistake in every model of car they ever produced? It's dumb. This was working fine until 13.1.

Skipping tracks in playlists. This shouldn't be brain surgery. Apple F'd this up and they need to fix it. Right now my phone is utterly useless to me on my commute because of this.

I'm not going to start going after Hyundai. Apple broke it. Apple needs to fix it.

Same issue for me. I'm unable to change tracks within a Apple Music playlist using the steering wheel button. In the HUD, I see the checkmark move from the track currently playing to the track selected, but the checkmark quickly moves back to the track currently playing, and the track does not change.

I'm in a 2015 BMW X5 xDrive50i, with an Iphone X, running iOS 13.1.2.

The issue occurs both when connected via Bluetooth and when connected with a lightning cable.

I spoke to Apple this morning.

Level 1 tech who I spoke to started to go down the road of a software update on my X5.

I stopped her and told her that there are people who have already noted that this is not just on BMWs, but also on branded vehicles.

Then I told her that I would at least like some comfort that Apple is actively looking into this.

She tried to assure me of this, but there was not evidence such as a defect ID in the Apple systems or some case log, etc.

I asked to escalate this issue since there are a lot of threads out there regarding this issue.

She passed me to a supervisor who tried to tell me that she's sure there's someone from Apple looking into it.

I asked her how she knows for sure or if some assurance in writing would be provided to the post?

I mean - it doesn't look like there is an Apple entry anywhere in this thread. How would anyone know that Apple is working on this actively unless they issue a statement, an internal ticket number or defect assigned to a technician, none of which Apple has provided.

The supervisor couldn't provide any proof or answer to my question of how she knows they're working on it, just that "they must be working on it if there are so many complaints".

I asked how we know that our comments are being looked at and not just falling on deaf ears.

There are no answers given.

It's truly terrible support on Apple's part.

We should have a ticket number with status updates telling us that this has truly been identified as a defect, that is being worked on, that it is slated for an upcoming release, etc.

Surely, some Apple executive must have a new iPhone and drive a BMW, right? WTF?!?!?!?

yup, i completely agree with goran_s. i too have HUD and i use that avenue to see and select the song i want to listen to. Now it is broken. WTF. Now, i have to unlock the phone, open apple music, find my playlist, find the song i want to listen to and select it.

I have opened a case with apple and they are scheduled to call me at 1800hrs pacific time today to see if they can resolve it. i really doubt it they can resolve it without an update to fix this issue.

Dear all,

unfortunately I need to join that club.

For me it’s my 2014 Audi S3 with MMI HIGH and Audi Media Interface.

I tested it on iPhone X and iPhone 6s applying iOS 13.1, 13.1.1, 13.1.2 and in the moment iOS 13.2 beta 1.

No improvement at all.

Actually I am pretty happy I am not an boundary condition and I am not alone.

I even started to think about to change my habits and stop using my “favorites” playlist and delete all tracks which are not my favorites to be able to play all songs. Even I started to download podcasts since podcast is working fine for the moment.

On my drive home today I got side swiped from a stolen vehicle fleeing the scene, I incurred heavy damage. But to be honest that was a more livid about pressing my centre dial 83 times to listen to my mutha f@ckin jam.

Same Audio Track Selection Issue 2014 BMW 3 Series.

I can advance or move back only one track at a time, requiring a manual action for ever single track change on my personal playlists on Apple Music. This occurs on both my steering wheel control and centre dial, extremely inconvenient and painfully annoying.

Please fix before I get my ride back:)

Please re-tweet, reply to or add to the tweet, like the tweet and maybe add #IOS13 and some other hash-tags.

My Twitter is NYYScott.

Maybe we'll get an official Apple response this way.

I spoke to support and all they could tell me was that if the issue is that big, that Apple must know about it.

I asked for a defect number or if she had some sort of evidence that suggests that this was being looked at or slated for a release. Nope - just a hunch, but they don't have anything in their system at support that tells them one way or another.

I have submitted my findings too. I have an older iPhone 6s which is running 12.0 and it works perfectly so it’s a 13.0 and after updates issue. I can also tell you this is the same in my friends Mini and my other friends Mercedes C class, so over to you Mr Apple.

Funny thing is don’t tell me some executive from Apple hasn’t got free Apple Music and a BMW and hasn’t suffered the same crap we are all having, step up to the plate Apple and deal with it.

Its an issue and a big one, you are asking us to pay £9.99 or $9.99 and you’re failing us, this is breach of contract to supply us with a working functional system.

This is damaging to your business, always remember Steve Jobs....look after the customer, it will look after your business......over to you APPLE, do Mr Jobs proud.

My BMW i3 has the same issue with my iPhone XR and iOS 13.1.2, Bluetooth or USB connected. I tried my sons iPhone X with iOS 12 and it works fine. I updated my i3 to it's latest software, and problem still persists. There was nothing new I needed from iOS 13. So, a big step backward for me. Adding complexity to my life at the cost of pleasure. Apple used to be applauded for the opposite.
