iOS 13 Apple Music and BMW's iDrive problems

Hello I have a problem and was wondering if anyone else experience this:

I have a BMW with an iDrive media system. Before updating to iOS 13, it worked with my iPhone perfectly, over the bluetooth. However, after updating, I can't control the media playback (using the steering wheel) when I'm playing songs from A LOCAL PLAYLIST! If I play songs from an album or my whole songs library, controls work perfect. Also, if I play any online playlists (e.g. Pure Party playlist in Apple music) it works perfectly. There is something wrong about how the playback of LOCAL Apple Music playlists is being managed in iOS 13..

I have tried resetting (bluetooth and complete system restore) my phone and my car. I have also tried it with iPhone X and Xs Max and both had the same behaviour.

Devices to reproduce it:

BMW with an iDrive 4.0 system

iPhone X with iOS 13.1.1 (same issue persists with an iPhone Xs Max with iOS 13.1.1)

Apple Music

Steps to reproduce it:

1. Connect car's bluetooth to iPhone.

2. Play any song of any playlist.

3. Try to control the music playback (by choosing which song to play next)

4. System tries to skip to the selected song (by displaying it's playing it for a brief second, but not changing the sound), but is not able to.

iPhone XS Max

Read the comments. It clearly says it’s solved in iOS 13.2 Beta 3. So, install that or wait for the official release of iOS 13.2. It should be out before the end of this month.

Hi, you can easily downgrade to iOS 13.0 without any data loss with IMyPhone Fixppo. Easy just like make an update. You can do it even with iTunes but you have to format and restore is not so easy because iTunes lets you restore a backup if you have the same software version of iOS. If you make a backup with iOS 13.1.x you can't restore it on iOS 13.0 bacause iTunes will ask you to update before restoring.

I have the same exact issue in my 2017 Mini Cooper S, which also uses iDrive. When I try to advance a track, the new track shows in the speedo display with a checkmark, then briefly on the main display, as you said, but then the same song continues playing. I can at least skip tracks with the buttons on the head unit. It worked for 3 years and 3 different iPhones, until this update.

Got a new ‘19 BMW X3 last Friday and enjoyed full playlist functionality with my iPhone X just for ONE DAY before yet another unwanted iOS updated was rammed down my digital throat overnight on Friday only to leave me with the lost, previously daily-used and enjoyed functionality, on Saturday. Like others, I can scroll down through a playlist like my “Recently Played” play list with the HUD or iDrive wheel and click on a song which then only momentarily shows a check mark in front of it before restarting the song that was already playing. Apple, can you do your security upgrades without screwing around with other things that aren’t broken and creating extra steps to complete what was once a simpler task? And maybe read your own forums and address your customers’ concerns??

Same here with fellow BMW owners that have iDrive. I am based in the UK.

Updated my iPhone 8 Plus to 13.1.2 on Monday, works perfectly with my Pioneer Car Play head unit in my DC5 Type R.

I plugged the phone into my 2015 F30 335d this morning (9/10) and I could just pick a song from my own playlists but can’t change using the control on the steering wheel. I can skip via the next and previous using the iDrive rotary switch. Oddly enough it works fine if the selection is all the songs. I am lucky enough that I have no issue with Bluetooth bar the sound being quieter than before. Also cannot skip songs on Bluetooth either. It is defo an Apple issue, my car has the latest software.

  • apple chat

  • I
  • do honestly feel that the iOS 13.1.2 has outdated the software in the
  • vehicles which means the new iOS version is not as compatible as it was
  • before. There are no definite answers. I say this because there has been
  • changes made to the iOS software which means every feature on the
  • iphone is not going to function properly.
  • I did check into my resources and I do see many users have reported the issue and they are mostly bmw owners.
  • so why would they make changes that would impact the functionality
  • 10:00

  • What
  • I am saying is, every model car does not have this issue with the iOS
  • 13. It is specifically the bmw cars with that specific software, which
  • makes me believe, the issue is on both ends. The new update is not as
  • compatible with the software in the vehicle.

That is not a fix for those who do not have Car Play in their cars. Also Apple blaming BMW is a bit of a **** take. It is not just BMWs that are affected. The issue is clearly with iOS 13.

Guess what folks, I dig up my 1st gen iPod Touch that I have lying around at home; loaded two playlists on plugged it in and it works PERFECTLY with my 335d. That iPod is running iOS 3.x and it was bought in 2008. Good job I kept it around.

Still I like Apple to fix the problem. It is not like everyone can just go swap out their cars like they do with god **** iPhones.

Apple IOS 13 made a change and now it doesn't work in multiple car models. They need to fix what they broke in IOS publish correct, detailed information regarding the problem and the solution and if necessary provide all affected bluetooth connecting device manufacturers a resolution to any new/future connectivity requirements and solicit an expected ETA

I have an almost identical problem with my Aston Martin DB11 which is using the last gen Mercedes infotainment.

The only difference being that over Bluetooth it’s fine, I can skip a playlist track, but when connected by cable it won’t do it, just flashes up momentarily as you describe.

My 2018 Jaguar isn’t happy either, kicks up all sorts of issues when connected by cable/USB but fine over Bluetooth.

All issues new since updating to iOS 13, what on Earth have they done to us? 🙈

I have the same issue (2018 BMW 540). I can change the song when pushing the prev, next buttons that are near the CD eject button but cannot change a song from the steering wheel control or the iDrive control.

When selecting a song, a checkmark shows up next to the selected one and then bounces back to the one that is currently playing. The original question addresses this bug happening when connected via bluetooth, I can confirm that this is happening to me while connected through USB for music playback as well.
