Apple TV sleeps when it shouldn't after OS 13 update

After updating my Apple TV 4K to OS version 13, the Apple TV goes to sleep whenever I'm playing music...Pandora, in my case. This wasn't a problem prior to updating to version 13. Interestingly, it goes to sleeps even when I'm using AirPlay to play music from my iPhone and/or iPad to my Apple TV.

Is anyone else having this problem, and have you figured out a fix or workaround? The only thing I can think to try is to turn off the Sleep feature altogether, but that's less than ideal.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or idea.

I'm having the same issues. My ATV 4K shuts itself off (goes into sleep mode) at my predesignated sleep time (in my case 15 minutes) when using the Pandora App. I mentioned this issue in another thread that after updating to 13.0 (along with

experiencing several other update issues), Pandora was dropping out about every 15 minutes. After the drop my screen went blank. I would hit the menu button on the remote and the play arrow on Pandora and it would play for another 15

minutes. At first I thought it was just a compatibility issue with Pandora App until reading this thread and learned it was tie to the ATV sleep mode function as well. I had already used the reset/re-update tool which cleaned up a lot the other issues that the 13.0 update created. Unfortunately, however, it didn't fix this Pandora/sleep mode function problem. I not sure if there are other apps affected with this bug but I tested a couple more Apps below.

1.  I started Pandora. Yes, after 15 minutes the ATV went into sleep mode. I repeated the test with the same results.

2.  Next, I tried the iHeart Radio App. After 25 minutes iHeart Radio was still playing so I moved on. Apparently no issues with this app.

3.  I then tried playing back my music from my iTunes library housed on my PC. No issues with it either. Continued to play for a couple of hours until I shut it off.

4.  I rented a movie from Prime Video. Movie played from beginning to end (couple of hours long). No glitches, no buffering, no issues.

Without testing every app, it would appear to me there is a conflict with the ATV's sleep function and Pandora's App. I have now set my ATV to sleep after 5 hours. Pandora continued to play after 15 minutes and I'm anticipating after 5 hours the ATV with then go to sleep. If I don't fall asleep first.

If you can give me the contact info you used to contact Apple support, I would like to also let them know that I experiencing the same problem(s).

Put me on the list, I use TuneIn Radio Pro. Have always used a 15 minutes “Sleep setting” in the past (Apple TV 1,2 and now 4). Currently using 10 hours to Sleep. If I recall correctly, several years ago the identical issue arose after major TV OS update and it took F-O-R-E-V-E-R until the problem was corrected - several months at least, maybe more. As the TV is probably the least significant (IMHO) of all Apple’s products, I’d say were in for “the long haul”. But I hope I’m wrong.

Same problem here. Streaming music with plex or some radio apps will shutdown after 15mins. So annoying when im in the middle of a workout sessions and the music suddenly stops ... Works on my nerves so much that im thinking to buy the new nvidia shield ...

All started since tvos 13. Apple please fix this.

I have the same problem and it is so frustrating, change out hdmi cables (high bandwidth) and no solution. Pandora now allows playlists plus but apple does not allow. I never has problems with apple tv 4th gen. Not happy and thinking of going to Roku. Also, I have apple music but you can't play at length before music stop and Äre you still listening".

Same here. No fix with sleep mode/Pandora issue (in my case) by updating to 13.2.

Also not fixed. Home Sharing/Screensaver setting still reverts back to Aerial View when the ATV is restarted, unplugged, or after a firmware update. Just a pain having to reset your login credentials over again with iTunes each time this happens.

I did notice one change with this lasted update. Prior to update, when "manually" activating screen saver mode you had to double click the menu button while in the upper left "corner" of the home screen. Now you have to be over your upper left "app" on the home screen then double click the menu button to activate.

The Apple TV (once caramel coated and dipped in chocolate) has now fallen off the tree and rotting with bugs. Might be time to give the Roku (or any another streaming device) a try if they can't or are unwilling to fix their problems.

Correction: I tested it on both my iMac 27" running Catalina and on my iPhone XS running iOS 13.2:

iMac: Playing from the Music App via Airplay 2, the Apple TV sleeps after exactly 15 minutes.

iPhone: Playing from the Music App using Apple Music via Airplay2, Apple TV keeps on playing after 15 minutes.

i'm experiencing the same issue. although i'm using the soma fm app. i have had the sleep set to 15 minutes for as long as i can remember. but, yeah, now it sleeps even if music is playing through the soma fm app, which didn't use to be the case. i set sleep to never, but that's just annoying - i *want* the device to sleep if i'm not using it.

i just called apple support and talked to someone and they said it has been reported by users and they are already aware of it internally. the only current workaround is increasing the sleep timer. they said they are working on a fix, and it will be rolled out in a future update.

Somewhat same issue here. I have this issue with Airplay from Apple Music. In the past, the Apple TV would register that it was "busy" when streaming music from another device, and so it would not sleep. Ever since the 13 update, the Apple TV puts itself to sleep at the designated "sleep after" time, interrupting the music on whatever device it's streaming from. This is a bit annoying since I'm stuck working remote for a while. 😕

Agreed, I have a AppleTV 4k that is playing a stream of AppleMusic from my brand new Apple MacBook Pro and it times out after 15 min. I refuse to have the ATV timeout to zero as a fix, that's too Microsoftie for me. It seems that after our collective investment into them they might put a little time into allowing us to not suffer so much to use their more basic capabilities. Hire a high schooler and detect the incoming activity and don't sleep. Why is that so hard?

Just information if you happen to experience this same issue. Screen saver activation glitch update? I had mention in a prior post that prior to update 13.2, when "manually" activating the screen saver mode I had to double click the menu button while in the upper left corner of the home screen with ATV 4K. After the update 13.2 I then had to hover over the upper

left "app" on the home screen then double click the menu button to activate". Well now my ATV 4K has reverted back to the upper left hand corner of the home screen again. The only thing I can think of, I performed a "restart"on my ATV troubleshooting another issue and it change back the screen saver activation setting. Who knows. At least it working.

Thanks for the write up. I can confirm it's not just Pandora. I'm streaming music from my MacBook Pro, through airplay, and it does the same thing (but of course I first discovered this using the Pandora app on my iPhone as well).

Looks like an iOS 13 bug, where it simply doesn't send the necessary command to keep the receiver awake, or the receiver does not realize it's in airplay mode, or perhaps the functionality was simply left out.

Anyhow, here's to Apple fixing the bug!

I have the exact same problem and an additional insight:

this has probably something to do with the appleTV thinking that no output device is connected.

In my case I have a onkyo DVR, which connects the apple TV and other devices to a projector and (obviously) outputs sound. When i listen to music through airplay, i logically have turned off the projector. in this case, this problem with appleTV going to standby during airplay happens. It seems NOT to happen, if the projector is turned on!

As all three devices support additionl hdmi controls, they can turn off each other. Maybe there is a bug in tvos 13 with that.

I can also confirm that this bug did not happen before tvos13.

just to follow up on this, i found a thread on a pandora community site where pandora users were complaining to pandora in oct and nov about this issue, and pandora rolled out an update that apparently fixed the issue for their app, according to several user comments and pandora closing the issue as fixed. since other apps don't seem like they've been fixed by the 13.2 or 13.3 updates, i'm guessing apple made a change in the 13 code and are just letting individual app creators figure it out themselves and apply a fix? otherwise, it seems like it'd be fixed for everyone via an os update. not sure what pandora did to fix their app, but it'd be nice if that was shared with other app devs with apps that do audio so they could fix the sleep issue as well. or apple would actually fix their change.

well, for anyone following this thread, after i posted the above comment, i found out there was a tvos 13.3.1 update that came out in the last week or so. i downloaded it and installed it, set the sleep value to 15 minutes, and started my audio app (somafm). it's now been playing for about an hour and a half. screen savers have been on the screen for over an hour at this point - they continue to play, as does the music. so i think 13.3.1 finally fixed it!
