Cannot load photo (There was an error loading this photo)

I get this message whenever I try to edit a photo in my camera roll. I do not have iCloud enabled and can’t seem to find any decent solutions around the forums. I’ve tried restarting my device. I have this issue for lots of pictures. It is only when I click edit. One in particular has a mark on it that I wanted to touch up but it will not let me. Please help

Feanne Yes, that's the workaround I use as well. I also found that I can use the 'Snapseed' editing photo app to open the photo from my Photo Library and edit the photo that way.

I received another phone call today and was assured that the engineers were looking into the bug but they haven't reported their findings back to my Apple Support person as yet.

I will update when I have news. :)

I just had a call from Apple and was told that the engineers are still working on the problem and don't have an answer yet. They told me to update to iOS 13.2 to see if it fixes the problem. I've just updated to 13.2 and the issue is still present. They will ring me back on Friday.

It's good that Apple are keeping in regular contact.

Thanks for all your effort on this! I also find that many of the photos now with poor resolution too! Does it happen to urs also? Plus can edit them and showing error messages! The photos with error messages can’t even be send via iMessage or any other social media app! Oh my! The only way I found right now is they can be open by Snapseed and the resolution will be back to high quality and u will need to re-edit something then re-save it! But it’s gonna be killing ppl to do it over the dozens of photos in the phone sigh!

I think it may be the way the file is written out. Every single .jpeg file I have that has been written out from scanning photos in and has basic fixes in Photoshop will not edit. That is, unless I message it to myself. But most files that come directly from my Canon camera will edit, no problem. I did notice that some camera pics edited previously give me trouble too. Not all .jpegs are created equal, so maybe Apple needs to investigate those differences.

Mrksts My issues are with all .jpg files from my Canon and Sony Cameras uploaded to iCloud via desktop which my iPhone won't open. However if I take those same files into Photoshop and save/change the file name to .jpeg and upload to iCloud via desktop then they will open on my iPhone.

Apple engineers installed their profile on my iPhone then collected data from my iPhone Photo Library on and off for 3 weeks while I took them through my experience with the problem.

Apple engineers eventually found the issue and logged it as a bug. I've not heard from them for just over a week, but I expect it takes time for them to work this thing out.

I have been having this same issue now for months. It is extremely frustrating. I load in sometime 500 pictures at a time on Icloud directly from my memory card from my Nikon camera, and all of them will not allow me to edit them on my Iphone. It is frustrating. It will not even allow me to upload to Instagram without going through the photostream and then back to Instagram to edit the caption, but no editing of the image itself and when in the camera it wont even let me select a photo let alone do anything with it. I have an Iphone 6S, but the latest update, not sure if that has anything to do with it. I have tried everything I could find to no avail.

I too am having this issue and am chalking it up to iOS 13. Never had one issue with iOS 12 until I installed iOS 13. I install all the updates that are supposed to fix issues and then there are more issues it seems. This is ridiculous. I think I need to go back to another cloud service if I want to see any of my photos. It’s been months with this issue and they gave the original poster the runaround and said they couldn’t find anything and others are having the same issue?

I’m PAYING for the cloud service and the only way I can edit my photos that were working before iOS 13 is to airdrop it to my phone and then it works. Come on, Apple. Please fix this. You know this is on your end since so many users are experiencing it. Really tired of this.

Updated to latest IOS, but problem still exists. Have spent hours on phone with Apple creative media department, with problem forwarded to engineering. Things worked just fine with IOS12, so I cannot imagine why it is taking so long for the editing problem to be resolved. Snapseed works, but only by saving a copy which is not exactly what I want to do with my work flow.

Yes Snapseed worked for me by saving a copy. Messaging a photo to myself and then saving said photo worked as well.

Hope this helps.

None of my photos from my Canon and Sony cameras loaded in Photos nor could I edit them, unless I used Snapseed or messaged the photo to myself.

But since the latest update iOS13.3 I noticed that any new photo I imported to my Photos, the photo was able to be opened and edited.

There were still many of my Canon and Sony photos that wouldn't load, open or able to be edited even with the latest update. So what I did, I deleted all those photos which I had uploaded to my iPhone from iCloud.com. These photos remained a problem and I was getting tired of waiting for a fix!

Once I updated to iOS 13.3 I then re uploaded my Canon and Sony photos to my iPhone via iCloud.com and these photos now open. Even my Photoshop artwork opens in Photos, which they used to in iOS 12. iOS 13 screwed everything up.

I don't know how long Apple engineers will take to fix that bug which seems to affect some photos after the iOS 13 update. The support team contacted me a couple of weeks ago and still no fix and no news.
