Cannot load photo (There was an error loading this photo)

I get this message whenever I try to edit a photo in my camera roll. I do not have iCloud enabled and can’t seem to find any decent solutions around the forums. I’ve tried restarting my device. I have this issue for lots of pictures. It is only when I click edit. One in particular has a mark on it that I wanted to touch up but it will not let me. Please help

Yes Snapseed worked for me by saving a copy. Messaging a photo to myself and then saving said photo worked as well.

Hope this helps.

None of my photos from my Canon and Sony cameras loaded in Photos nor could I edit them, unless I used Snapseed or messaged the photo to myself.

But since the latest update iOS13.3 I noticed that any new photo I imported to my Photos, the photo was able to be opened and edited.

There were still many of my Canon and Sony photos that wouldn't load, open or able to be edited even with the latest update. So what I did, I deleted all those photos which I had uploaded to my iPhone from iCloud.com. These photos remained a problem and I was getting tired of waiting for a fix!

Once I updated to iOS 13.3 I then re uploaded my Canon and Sony photos to my iPhone via iCloud.com and these photos now open. Even my Photoshop artwork opens in Photos, which they used to in iOS 12. iOS 13 screwed everything up.

I don't know how long Apple engineers will take to fix that bug which seems to affect some photos after the iOS 13 update. The support team contacted me a couple of weeks ago and still no fix and no news.

I think it may be the way the file is written out. Every single .jpeg file I have that has been written out from scanning photos in and has basic fixes in Photoshop will not edit. That is, unless I message it to myself. But most files that come directly from my Canon camera will edit, no problem. I did notice that some camera pics edited previously give me trouble too. Not all .jpegs are created equal, so maybe Apple needs to investigate those differences.

I tried renaming files to .jpeg and unfortunately this didn’t work for me :( Basically if I try to transfer photos to my phone via airdrop, icloud, or dropbox, it won’t work. But it *does* work if I download the images using my mobile browser (for example if I access the dropbox link on my mobile browser, or if I upload images to my website and download using my mobile browser). At least I have a workaround but it’s still a hassle and I hope they fix this soon.

Eenglis1 Since I updated to iOS13.3 I was able to edit only newly uploaded Canon and Sony photos, but not edit any of those photos before the upgrade of iOS 13.

So I deleted all my photos on my phone from Canon and Sony prior to the upgrade and re uploaded them to iCloud.com after upgrading to iOS.13.3 and now I can edit and send to Instagram.

I don't know if this helps at all.

I too am having this issue and am chalking it up to iOS 13. Never had one issue with iOS 12 until I installed iOS 13. I install all the updates that are supposed to fix issues and then there are more issues it seems. This is ridiculous. I think I need to go back to another cloud service if I want to see any of my photos. It’s been months with this issue and they gave the original poster the runaround and said they couldn’t find anything and others are having the same issue?

I’m PAYING for the cloud service and the only way I can edit my photos that were working before iOS 13 is to airdrop it to my phone and then it works. Come on, Apple. Please fix this. You know this is on your end since so many users are experiencing it. Really tired of this.

You're welcome. Has that worked for you copying your photos? The photos taken on my iPhone which I download from iCloud are fine, I can re upload those fine too. But if I make changes to them via Photoshop then upload them to iCloud, my iPhone won't open the photo.

It took me hours to resolve my issue and it came down to the file extension.

My workaround to the problem is to change the file name to .jpeg via Photoshop and iCloud will open those photos.

I have to do these to all my Canon and Sony photos if I upload to iCloud otherwise my photos won't open.

The Engineers were interested and thanked me for bringing it to their attention. So hopefully they too can see the problem their end.

Sorry I meant to post before today but had a hectic weekend. I had a response from Apple engineers and they told me that they could now see the problem with the photos and the iPhone Photo App from their data collection sync off my iPhone. This was the third data sync with their profile installed on my phone and this time they actually 'captured' the problem 'live' with several of my photos not being able to open in the Photo Library because of the error 'Cannot Load Photo'.

So finally from all the statistics collected the engineers could 'see' the problem.

Apple did tell me that they will contact me again on Friday 1st November with their 'findings' and thanked me for bringing this to their attention. So I believe it's a bug after all.

Hopefully this will bring a fix.

Updated to latest IOS, but problem still exists. Have spent hours on phone with Apple creative media department, with problem forwarded to engineering. Things worked just fine with IOS12, so I cannot imagine why it is taking so long for the editing problem to be resolved. Snapseed works, but only by saving a copy which is not exactly what I want to do with my work flow.
