iPhone ringer volume keeps turning down

Since upgrading to iOS 13.1(now 13.1.2), the volume on the phone that that I normally have set on maximum level, keeps lowering on its own to about 25%. I became aware of the problem when my alerts (email, text, other alerts) were often barely audible if phone was in my pants pocket.

I can raise it back to maximum and it can lower on it's own within a few minutes even if the phone has not been in use, having any activity, or even wakened. One I time raised the volume, plugged it in to charge while in the car, picked it up less than two minutes later and the volume had dropped. In a thirty minute timeframe of checking, the volume dropped four times. The phone has now gone an hour without the volume changing so doesn't appear to be time related.

All though these events I did not use (or touch) the side volume buttons other than to raise it back to my normal levels.

Under settings/sounds & haptics, the Change with Buttons is on and does function.

I have an iPhone Pro Max 12, am on ios 14.4.2 and have the same problem. Additionally, I have 'change with buttons' off...but my side volume buttons still function the same. Totally confusing and annoying.

Apple..... WHEN are you going to address this issue.? Your phones are of no value if we mill all of our calls.

Apple just released a new model of iPhone and an OS update for the existing phone now thousands of iPhone owners are experiencing their ringer keeps automatically turning down AGAIN. This is a scam to get you to upgrade and purchase another phone. They have done this exact thing before when they introduced the iPhone X so they are fully aware of this and have chosen to use it against us again.

sure I’ll buy a new phone this time but this was the last iPhone piece of junk I’ll ever buy from the thieves and deceitful people at apple. How sad they choose to put an intentional bug in existing phones and try and force a new phone on people during a pandemic when so many are unemployed. Really shameful!!

I encourage everyone with this problem to file a complaint with the fair trade administration rather than try solutions they know won’t work. They are just leading you on until you buy another phone

I have the same issue with volume lowering automatically. I have been able to narrow down that is happens any time I connect a Bluetooth speaker or headset after os 13ish. Super frustrating that they broke this I have missed so many calls because of this problem. Combine that with the latest screen shot issues and the phone sucks!!!

I have had it several times and the volume goes down when I have my ear buds in and same with my bluetooth radio at work. Its quite annoying. My change button is OFF and this still happens. I really regret getting this phone, as it never did it with my iPhone 8. I recently just purchased iPhone 12 Pro, for the camera and this crap happens all the time. Its quite annoying. My phone is on silent all the time.

*DEAR APPLE* Fix it so we have a choice it we want our ear drums damaged.....

Hi - has this issue ever been fixed? I have a XS and as soon as I turn up the volume it turns down to about 10% again instantly by itself. Awareness feature off. Change with buttons off. It’s driving me absolutely bonkers. I can never hear the phone ring, nor when I get a message. It’s now started doing it in the middle of my french lessons too so I can’t hear the french phrase being uttered that I’m meant to translate. Could someone advise how to fix this please urgently? It gets worse and worse and worse and seemingly nothing I can do about it. Thanks

I am also having this problem. I put the volume up and it pulls itself back down! I tried with hard restart, restore and backup and the settings system haptics, does not help. I thought it might have been caused because I dropped my phone in water but from reading this thread, it's from updating the iOS 14.4. I contacted Apple support and they wanted 300 euro to mail it in. I might as well get a new phone so I will just have to put up with it..

Same problem! I have an iPhone X with iOS 14.4. It started back with iOS 14 and I have tried every remedy that I could find, including, turning off volume buttons, turning off awareness features, turning of Face ID completely, restarting, restoring, upgrading to new iOS, etc...etc...etc... still have the same issue. I have had to get an additional alarm because I can’t rely on my phone and I have to constantly check my phone for missed calls because I never know when it will turn itself down and I will miss a call. If anyone has any fix other than the ones above, please let me know. It’s a shame we have been through soooooo many updates and Apple can’t seem to get their act together.

I have an iPhone 12 Pro, the issue is almost the same, but it only happens when i turn off the mute. My ringer volume becomes really quiet, and it shows on the top. If i change it with the buttons it becomes normal. I just bought the phone 1 month ago and it has many bugs (for example the Keyboard and system volume rising bug). Such a shame because my phone with Android had a more stable software stability.

I found the problem, or at least narrowed it down to a device process or app. After getting frustrated and upgrading my phone, the problem persisted. I heard someone mention an issue where bluetooth devices were changing ringer volume. I have the Sony WH1000-XM4 headphones that were paired with my phone and iPad simultaneously. I rarely use them with my phone, so I turned off the option to have the headphones connect to 2 devices simultaneously and only have them connected to one device of my choice at any time. The problem has not recurred for nearly 2 weeks. Don't know if it is a BT issue, Sony hardware issue, or Sony app issue, but I no longer have the issue of the alert/ringer volume randomly turning down. Did not have this issue when I had the Sony WH1000-XM3 headphones, but the issue began around the time of an iOS update, so I can not narrow it down any further than that. Hope this helps someone chasing the same issue.

So I was having the same problem where I couldn’t get my volume to stay up. As soon as I would turn it up it’d go back down. So when I went to my car and my phone automatically connected, it played and I had no problems. But when I connected my speaker or airpods it would keep going down. I found the only way to resolve it while not in my car was to turn the Bluetooth off.

with it off it has been working fine. I am taking my phone to get checked out still though. Will update after ☺️

I had my phones ringer and alerts randomly go to zero throughout the day as well, even with change with buttons off.

The reason is that I started getting spam calls. My iPhone would automatically identify these spam calls and silence my phone, but then it wouldn’t un-silence. So, to get this to stop, I went into Settings -> Phone -> Call Blocking and Identification then switched it to off. Now the spam calls come through, but at least I wake up for work.

iPhone 7 now on iOS 14.6. Same problem. I’ve just followed the work-around advice to switch off the volume control by the buttons. No idea if it’s going to work to solve this problem but it does NOT work in terms of what I’ve just set it to stop doing. Despite being switched off, I can still change the volume with the buttons. Unbelievable!!
