iOS 13.1.2 - Email not being marked as read when I read it

Hi, had this problem with every version of iOS 13 to the [current] 13.1.2.

When I select an unread email, it goes into the email and doesn't mark it as read.

Also, if I press the delete button on an email the email 'swooshes' off the screen and the same email is presented to me underneath, without it being deleted.

Just putting it on here so Apple have more awareness of the problem (yes, Apple staff do 'watch' the discussions).

Try going in to your outlook or office 365 account from a computer web browser and removing all mobile devices. Do this by opening outlook online then settings >all settings >General > mobile devices. Then remove the account from your phone through the passwords and accounts. Finally, add the account back. It seems the upgrade to ios13 creates another iPhone activesync object within the office 365 account. Once the objects are removed and only one is created again, it works fine.

This seemed to work for me so far.

I’m not overly familiar with Gmail configuration, but I know gmail has device management capability and there is a way to remove old device accounts.

I am now on ipad ios 13.7 and this problem is NOT solved. Sometimes it unmarks email correctly when they’ve been read, but most of the time this doesn’t happen and what I have had to do is manually unmark them as read, OR you can empty all trash and then it will work. Doesn’t make sense to clean out your trash folder day after day. I would think you would want trash items to remain in trash for a period of time in case you want to undelete an email.

This problem has been going on for a LONG time. Very surprising that Apple hasn’t fixed this.

That’s why it’s called a bug. They’re not always easy to reproduce, often intermittent and don’t happen to everyone. If it were happening to everyone all the time it would be easy to find and fix. Generally a company will only spend the resources looking into it if the percentage of complaints are big enough and it can be proven that it’s causing loss of income by not fixing it. Probably why it’s been an issue for so long.... despite those of us having known about the issue for so long, not enough people experience it, not enough of them are vocal enough about it, and it’s not likely causing people to leave the Apple ecosystem to garner any attention from Apple.

I have not personally experienced this issue on my own devices, but I work in IT and have heard wide reports of this issue from other users. They all come to me as the "apple guy" and bug me about what's wrong. Because I can't reproduce this issue, it's very difficult to determine what could be causing it. That and another issue where users are reporting that forwarded emails are not sending or cutting off parts of the forwarded portion.

I'm really tired of hearing people in my own office complain about these problems, particularly because my Mail has been 99.9% flawless... and I've been running iOS 13 since July with the developer beta. When iOS 13 officially released, I removed my dev beta and switched to the "end user experience," yet still have not had issues with Mail. For the users affected, we've tried removing and re-adding the affected accounts, but the issues persist. Each passing iOS update seems to anecdotally make the situation better, but not entirely fix.

With iOS 13.2 released today, I'd love to hear from other users to find out if this issue is finally resolved.

I reset the network settings as some people on here have suggested but it made no difference. Emails still not being marked as read until I’ve read them twice, and emails only move to a different folder when I move them a second time.

To my untrained eye this looks like a problem to do with how emails are downloaded to the phone because when I go to the inbox, even though the app icon is showing new emails, the emails only download a few seconds after I’ve opened the inbox, whereas they used to be there immediately.

Have had this problem with emails not being marked as “read”, only since the update to 13.4.1, and only on my iPad Pro 12.9. Have tried every suggested “fix” possible, short of deleting and reinstalling gmail account, which I’m reluctant to do. On balance, seeing so many others having this problem, I doubt that step would fix it.

Strangely, there’s an error message which appears below the mail inbox messages which states “gmail account error December 16, 2019” with a “details” message link, which when clicked, does nothing. That message appears whenever the app is searching for new emails. Hoping an update will fix this.

Question: is this only a gmail problem or are users of other mail providers having same problem?

Nope, the fix (turning email off, then restarting iPad, then turning email back on in accounts settings)) didn’t last past one email.

Such high hopes, sadly dashed. Back to no automatic “Read” for read mail. Not just for gmail but iCloud mail as well. Hoping Apple will fix this. This started with the 13.1.2 update. Wasn’t fixed in 13.1.4.
