iOS 13.1.2 - Email not being marked as read when I read it

Hi, had this problem with every version of iOS 13 to the [current] 13.1.2.

When I select an unread email, it goes into the email and doesn't mark it as read.

Also, if I press the delete button on an email the email 'swooshes' off the screen and the same email is presented to me underneath, without it being deleted.

Just putting it on here so Apple have more awareness of the problem (yes, Apple staff do 'watch' the discussions).

Try going in to your outlook or office 365 account from a computer web browser and removing all mobile devices. Do this by opening outlook online then settings >all settings >General > mobile devices. Then remove the account from your phone through the passwords and accounts. Finally, add the account back. It seems the upgrade to ios13 creates another iPhone activesync object within the office 365 account. Once the objects are removed and only one is created again, it works fine.

This seemed to work for me so far.

I’m not overly familiar with Gmail configuration, but I know gmail has device management capability and there is a way to remove old device accounts.

Hi again Laurence.

First, it’s an iPad, not phone, and I don’t have cellular, only WiFi service.

Also, most of what you’ve suggested doesn’t apply on my iPad, up to and through the “battery power” suggestion.

I’ve deleted and reinstalled, following all instructions and my settings and passwords are all correct.

I only have the one account of AOL and I have it on push in. I’ve chosen to delete the Apple app and reinstalled my AOL app.

BTW, the problem got worse after the last software update.

Thanks anyway for your assistance in the problem, stay safe and healthy.

Hello Whitesnake29,

The answer to your question, to make money.

With each update, your device gets a bit older, while still improving some things, unless an uproar is made, it’s just not cost effective for them to fix all bugs 🐜. They need a large percentage of the population to complain, I have no idea what the percentage is, but they have a number they go by. Also, if the problem is made public, or they’re being sued, they address that issue because their brand reputation is affected.

Otherwise, most software updates little by little fix minor bugs they may find, and improve the bells and whistles in their apps........however, still aging your device until it will not update any more. Thus my First Generation iPad, my Samsung S4, S5, and slowly my current S7, have either ceased to work or can no longer accept updates.

There are places that know how to “refurbish” some devices, but what you pay for that, it’s a personal decision that you’d have to determine if it’s worth it for you.

This is what keeps them in business. Sadly, I’ll need a new phone soon, maybe within a year, I’m sure.

Hope this answered your question.

Ali

This is a blame game with an Apple apologist on one side and people with problems on the other. System quality is going down and people are having more problems. Throw the blame on users not knowing what they’re doing. The problems keep getting worse. I have the same setting on all my (5?) devices. Some have problems, some don’t. Log in, log out, turn device off, turn device on, check settings, etc. Every iOS upgrade brings another problem. Never is it solved. I want now to see what we’re going to be answered.

If this is only happening on my iPad and not iPhone (with the same email accounts). How can you assume it’s a setting? 2. Why would a setting in a non iCloud account affect my iCloud settings and functionality?

One thing I could do is remove all of the non iCloud account on this iPad and see if it still does it but if my iphone does not do it, I would expect Apple iOS to fix this or to get it to work the same as the iphone.

I think that reasonable.

Mojave 10.14.6, Mail version 12.4 on a MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2015).

Gmail messsages that are clearly "Read", since viewing them in the Gmail web page shows them as read. It's some problem internal to the Apple Mail program.

My fix is to go into the Unread window where the mischaracterized messages keep showing up.

AND turn off View->Organize by Conversation

AND look at each message individually in the Unread window with the bottom Preview panel open

AND then restart Mail.

... and then turn Organize by Conversation back on again.

Lol, you think none of us have ever troubleshot the issue? And that it’s unlikely a bug? Doesn’t matter what your settings are, if a defined feature does something other than what it was supposed to do, that’s the definition of a bug.

Also keep in mind that a million people would be considered very few to Apple. I don’t know how wide spread this is, but it’s enough that many notice it every day. Will it go away the next device I get? Maybe. Maybe not.
