iOS 13.1.2 - Email not being marked as read when I read it

Hi, had this problem with every version of iOS 13 to the [current] 13.1.2.

When I select an unread email, it goes into the email and doesn't mark it as read.

Also, if I press the delete button on an email the email 'swooshes' off the screen and the same email is presented to me underneath, without it being deleted.

Just putting it on here so Apple have more awareness of the problem (yes, Apple staff do 'watch' the discussions).

Try going in to your outlook or office 365 account from a computer web browser and removing all mobile devices. Do this by opening outlook online then settings >all settings >General > mobile devices. Then remove the account from your phone through the passwords and accounts. Finally, add the account back. It seems the upgrade to ios13 creates another iPhone activesync object within the office 365 account. Once the objects are removed and only one is created again, it works fine.

This seemed to work for me so far.

I’m not overly familiar with Gmail configuration, but I know gmail has device management capability and there is a way to remove old device accounts.

The issue we share is different from the OP. They are experiencing their messages NOT being marked as Read. This does appear to have gotten better with iOS 13.3 as the marked Answer states.

What is happening to me is if I swipe Delete an UNREAD email and send it to the Deleted Items folder, it is automatically marked as READ which is not the case. Deleted Items had thousands of emails in it ALL MARKED READ. Obviously not the case. I want to see how many UNREAD items are even in my Deleted Items, thank you Apple. Please fix ASAP.

This is on an Exchange Account in my case.

Agreed. I've updated my phone, as well, and I am frequently unable to mark all my messages as read. I go through the process, but still the blue dots are there and still the red badge on the home screen, showing my unread message count.

I've even tried resetting network preferences, and no luck.

Re: OP's comment, "Also, if I press the delete button on an email the email 'swooshes' off the screen and the same email is presented to me underneath, without it being deleted." -- My wife experiences the same. She'll delete several messages, only for them to reappear.

The latest iPadOS update 13.5, did not fix the problem showing my gmail and iCloud mail as unread, on my iPad Pro 12.9. Am not having this problem on my recently updated iPhone 11. I’m not as concerned about this being a continuing annoyance as much as an indication of a more critical problem. I did submit a “feedback” on this problem recently, and although I know they don’t respond personally, a “we’re aware and working on it” notice of some kind would be good.

Hit and miss fir me - some days it marks as read and other days it dies not.

In either case I have unread mail in my junk mail and a mix of many and no mail in trash.

Now on 13.5.1 and that’s may no difference.

One thing I have not checked is if the mail is being marked read on the server and it’s only the mail app not showing it or if does not mark it read on the server as well. I’ll do a test in a day or so.

Wonder if they will fix it?

With the news from WWDC 2020 of letting you select the default mail app, they could either pull their socks up and fix things (this is not the only ‘quirk’ in the package) to keep customers loyal to the ‘Apple does everything’ idea or slowly let folk move to another app and save development resources...

I keep thinking back to the Airport WiFi death - great, simple to use kit but no longer a market that Apple wanted to be in so a simple thought becomes Apple provide the platform (iPad and App Store) and take a cut from the sales, so making money as a service company with the best hardware with little comeback from Apps that do not work correctly.

Maybe I’m a cynic in my old age...

Having an “Aha!” Moment. Of course, that makes sense, removing native mail app. Inconvenient, would prefer not to have to deal with yet another entity observing my email info. And yes, I also got zinged with their dumping Airport, having been sold the system at an Apple store after they’d already made the decision to dump it. Thanks for the insight, I hadn’t thought that far ahead; likely explanation of their not fixing the mail glitches.

iPadOS 13.5.1 and still getting this issue. I’ve never been on an OS lower than 13.5. It’s clearly an issue spanning all iPads on OS13 at least. Like many in this specific thread it is not my iCloud email account that is affected. For me personally it’s my Outlook account. It does not happen on my iPhone though. Hope Apple find a fix, thanks for letting us know how you all get on.
