iPhone not ringing after iOS 13 update

Since updating to iOS 13, my phone (iPhone XS) is sitting right in front of me on my desk and when someone calls, the phone doesn't ring or make a sound. It appears to happen when the phone is plugged in by cable to my MacBook Pro. I'm currently running iOS 13.1.2.

Any suggestions?

I had the same problem and after talking to several apple reps one of them finally suggested putting the device on recovery mode and resetting it from scratch (don't use a back up, once logged in to iCloud it will retrieve most of your data, I did have to manually update my apps though). This solved my issue and my phone now rings and alerts me to texts! Apparently the software was corrupt and it needed to be removed and reinstalled (resetting it to factory settings on the cloud does not remove hardware). You will need to have iTunes on a computer, below is a link to how to set it on recovery mode, hopefully it helps some of you

OK Spoke to Apple support...here's the fix......

Go to...... sounds really strange, but it worked for me......

SETTINGS>FACE ID & PASSCODE>ATTENTION AWARE FEATURES (need to scroll down to get to it)......turn it off!

Hard restart your phone........press volume up, press volume down then press and hold power button until Apple logo appears......

Hope it works for you!

Either way yoiu should be contacting Apple support, otherwise they wont know the extent of the problem!

I'm sharing this as I spent 3 days back and forth with T-Mobile over this issue. Every time I get a call that's not from a friend in my contacts it wouldn't even ring, just shows missed call. I was told check Bluetooth, check ringer, check Do Not Disturb settings, etc. Then, a girl at TMO told me to go into Settings > Phone > Uncheck 'Silence Unknown Callers'. And now it's resolved! Sometimes this is getting triggered during iOS updates, so check it if you're having a problem. It was painful to go back and forth with them for days to now see this is all it was!

OK, so I may have found a solution.......at least one that worked for me. Last night, after almost three weeks of cell phone misery, I broke down and performed a back up on my phone, and put it into recovery mode, with the hopes of trying to revert back to iOS 12. I couldn't figure out exactly how to do that, so I ended up doing a clean install of iOS 13.1.3 instead, and then restoring my phone & data from the backup. So far, all seems to be good. At the very least, my phone is ringing again! (and does not require constant re-booting to continue to do so). I have not been able to recreate any of the issue that I had been experiencing, since performing this procedure at midnight last night - Calls and texts now are announced and not silent, I can attached photos to text messages without any grief, and alot of my Apps that were acting goofy seem to be behaving much better (again, so far)

I followed these instructions that I found online:

https://inews.co.uk/news/technology/ios-13-issues-problems-bugs-apple-revert-ios-12-iphone-ipad-explained-636738

I did not want to have to resort to this (out of fear I might brick my phone) but I could not wait for Apple to get their act together and solve these issues. Why do I have to find this solution on my own? And why is Apple not addressing this issue, in this forum, and at the very least providing us with these very same instruction?? I'm pretty disappointed in the way Apple has left us all to just twist in the wind on this one.......

So, unless you hear a loud scream emanating from the NY area, I may be good.....we shall see! Good luck

I tried a Reset All Content and Settings, but that didn't work, then I did a DFU Restore and that fixed everything. You can do it on Mac or Windows, as long as you have iTunes installed, because you are going to need it. If you don't know how to perform a DFU Restore, there are a few videos online, I choose the one from the channel Payette Forward.

You may want to make sure you have all your settings, contacts, etc sync'ed up to the Clouds first, as a DFU Restore wipes your phone and installs a fresh version.

Anyway, that worked for me, the phone has been working fine for 3 days now, notifications from txt and calls, all is well.

I had the same problem. I updated via the iPhones 'update' to 3.1.13 and still had the problem that it didn't update the software properly. I ended up backing up my iPhone to my PC via iTunes, then had iTunes update it then recover my iPhone from the backup and I am now able to get the iPhone to ring.

Anyway, it appears that the problem is not only the original bogus 13 version, it's the process of upgrading the software via the incremental patches.  When I used the iTunes, it downloaded the full copy of 13.3 to install - NOT the incremental patches and it worked  (for me).

One thing I did find out is that there is a option in the iPhone Setting > phone which allows you to have the iPhone not to ring you if the calling number is not in your contacts or if you haven't tried calling the number recently (don't know how long 'recently' is.) This is a nice new feature that I am enjoying.

Thank you for the tip mblaw!

I deleted AT&T’s Call Protect app and also turned off another call blocking app in Settings / Phone / Call Blocking & Identification. One of those two or both was causing the issue. It’s been 4 days straight since I made this change and now my phone rings no problem everyday. No more constantly having to restart my phone!

I have not had to reboot my phone for this issue since my first reboot i reported. I do believe that this issue is related to Bluetooth, and here is why:

Occasionally when I am connecting to the speaker in my bathroom for when I shower, I open bluetooth and select the appropriate device, and suddenly I get prompted to connect my apple watch- WHICH I DON'T OWN. I have never had an apple watch, but it will repeatedly ask me to connect one. I didn't click on anything to indicate I have one, I just clicked on my speaker to connect it.

So, here is what I am suggesting to everyone:

1) turn off Bluetooth.

2) make sure that Do not disturb is disabled

3) make sure that Silence Unknown Callers is disabled

4) go into General, Resets, and reset Network Settings. The phone will reboot.

5) log back into phone and then manually reboot again. i know, seems redundant, but worth it.

6) test to see if calls and texts are getting notifications - this includes Audio and vibrations.

7) enable bluetooth and test with and without headphones/speaker/car connection.

This hopefully should get you back up and running, but if not, delete ALL the bluetooth devices and repeat the process again.

I am fairly confident that this is a glitch in the bluetooth build where it is not releasing its "connection" to a device, even when the device is out of range or turned off.

also- a side note. If you do not use iCloud services and plan on doing a hard RESET on the phone, back it up first through iTunes or you will lose everything. i don't believe this is a necessary step, but in case you go down this path, back up your phone first.

I signed up for the beta 13.2 release as a prior poster suggested. I installed that version on my iPhone 10XR. After that my phone now rings on all calls. It’s been working for about 2 days now. Also my Bluetooth is ON BUT I haven’t paired it with my vehicle yet. As others have noted, I think it’s related to some common App or device that’s high jacking the sound. The beta download is free, you don’t have to be a developer, just enroll in the beta program and follow the web links.

24 Hour update. So I did do the 13.2 beta update to my phone yesterday. So far everything is working as it should. everything rings, I can send text pictures, etc. for those that asked, yes I did a backup with itunes before I did the 13.2 beta update.

I did not have to reset any network, remove any phone contacts. so far its working as I'd expect my phone to work. so whatever 13.2 has vs 13.1.2 its an improvement so far.
