notifications not working ios 13.1.2

Since installing iOS 13.1.2, I do not message notifications on either my iPhone Xr or my watch. Receives are received, but no notifications. I’ve changed settings on both watch and phone, but still no notifications. Is this a known bug? Fix on the way?

I hope this helps you MammothHam...

Unfortunately, in Apple's misguided wisdom, notifications go to either your Apple Watch or iPhone, but not both!

  • If your iPhone is unlocked, you'll get notifications on your iPhone, instead of your Apple Watch.
  • If your iPhone is locked or asleep, you'll get notifications on your Apple Watch, unless your Apple Watch is locked with your passcode (ie when you put it on after charging and haven't put in your passcode).

Through reading through all the previous advice on this and other discussion pages, I have found that there are a couple of work arounds (in addition to your airplane mode).

  1. Turn off Wrist Detection (in your Apple Watch app on your iPhone). This will however, not let you use Apple Pay etc. Messages should now appear on both Watch and iPhone.
  2. Turn off your Watch Notifications in Messages, or Send to Notification Centre (in your Apple Watch app on your iPhone). This will allow the messages to appear on your iPhone, but not your Watch. This would be an issue though if you are using your Watch without being near your iPhone (eg you go on a walk without your iPhone).

My issue with notifications and the phone not ringing started back when the iOS 13.1.2 update was installed back in October 2019. I didn't get my Apple Watch until Xmas 2019 so the watch wasn't the issue at that stage.

Again, through all my research, I found that there was a bluetooth issue with that update which was one of the major causes for the phone and messages to not not ring. For instance, if you get a text and you don't have your watch connected to the Bluetooth, then you get notified of your message on the iPhone by both the ringing and notification on the screen. For those that don't have an iPhone, then it may have been their Mac connected by bluetooth, or something else. One person found they had bluetooth speakers that although turned off, were still connected to the BT so it caused them the issue. Another person found that their car's bluetooth in the garage had been causing the issue. So you need to check ALL bluetooth connections and delete any unnecessary ones.

Another of the issues was due to iMessage being turned on. For instance, when my daughter texted me on her Samsung, I didn't receive notifications/ringing. If my husband texted me on his iPhone, I also didn't receive anything, however, if my friend texted me from her iPhone, but had her iMessage turned off, then I got the notifications!

Apple sent out a couple of updates to fix these issues, which they may have been, but as I got the Apple Watch and didn't realise that you couldn't have notifications on both at the same time (so thought the issue continued), I can't tell you if or when the initial issue got resolved.

There just seems to be way too many issues that are not being resolved, at least in a timely fashion. It doesn't help that Apple have chosen to have notifications to behave the way have either. Very disappointing. I feel Apple will lose a lot of customers from these issues as they go on for way too long.

Anyway, I hope this helps you understand a little more about your issue, even though I don't believe it will solve it.

I'm having the same issue. But in my case, I get notifications from everyone who texts me (iMessage or regular text), except for only one person. I deleted that person's texts, power off the phone, reset all settings, check Do Not Disturb, Hide Alerts, volume, everything but nothing could resolve this issue. I even texted myself and I get notifications of my texts.

I contacted Apple Support and after explaining my issue all they could tell me was to check with Verizon.

I explained them that Verizon just manages my plan. This was obviously a device issue and it's pretty clear that this happened right after iOS 13.1.2 upgrade. I was texting before and after the upgrade with that specific person so I know it has to do with the upgrade.

Very annoying that Apple support tells me to check with my carrier. If Apple cannot fix it, I don't know how Verizon would.

This is very very frustrating and Apple is not doing anything to resolve this issue.

How can I get text notifications from everyone except one?

Same problem here >:(

After installing ios 13.1.2 on my iPhone 7 I only get notifications for emails and sms while for all the other apps (whatsapp, facebook ecc) I don't get any alert and I can only see the messages when I open the apps :(

I've already checked all the notifications settings and I tried the soft reset procedure multiple times but nothing happened :(

IMO, there is 2 issues here.

  1. Special case, iPhone 7 (maybe more) have the issue of getting empty tokens.
  2. iOS 13.1 enforces how token should be retrieve. (Most dev did not follow this, and got burned when the OS updates) The old way is deprecated.

iOS 13.2 seems to fix iPhone 7 null token issues. (I am sorry i have no idea about XR or other iPhone models)

So to completely fix this.

  1. Upgrade to iOS 13.2
  2. Launch all apps with notifications (The app should fetch the corrected notifications on launch) FB / Whatsapp / Messages etc etc.
  3. If the app still does not give you notification, reinstall it. (iPhone should prompt the "Allow Notification" again).
  4. If app STILL does not work, you may need to ask the developer responsible for the app.

This is a very bad experience.. hope Apple can resolve this directly.

I have not been getting notifications from a specific contact, note I have updated my phone to IOS 13.2.3. I talked with Apple support many times, the following is what I was told to fix the issue. Disclaimer: This might just be a temporary fix, until Apple fixes the issue on their side.

For anyone not getting a push notification nor the red banner notification from a specific contact/s:

  1. Delete the contact completely, from wherever it might show up. DO NOT DELETE ANY CONVERSATION THREADS.
  2. Go to the messages app and tap on “create new message”
  3. Type in the contact’s Apple ID (the original thread between you and that contact will show up), send a quick text. You may notice the name of your contact is now their Apple ID, that is good.
  4. Now open the thread, tap on their name, tap the info icon
  5. Tap where the Apple ID shows up and then create a new contact. Add their name and phone number.
  6. The issue should be resolved.

I hope this issue is resolved in the new IOS update , as doing these steps every time the issue happens is a little annoying.

Mine is the same and no help with support. So I see one thing which is a problem even if you pick to alert on the lock screen as I have done, when you go back to the notification page it will not list that you have chosen the lock screen. I have tried everything. :( The only thing which will show are the Banners, sound and badges! on the lock screen it does not show that you have chosen it.

I am having the same issue with my iPhone 7 Plus. Do not receive any Push Notifications since the update to iOS 13.1.2.

Additionally iMessage and FaceTime do not work after the update. iMessage and FaceTime status is "Waiting for activation..." for 4 days (since the update)... Tried toggling iMessage and Facetime On/Off, removing SIM Card, Restarting iPhone - nothing has helped so far...

Don't know if this is related but at the moment of updating I was roaming and not using the home carrier.

Tried "Reset All Settings" as suggested above but this did not solve my issue.

Does someone have other ideas?

Note: After the Reset a white screen followed with message at the bottom "Press home to upgrade". Pressed Home and upgrade completed successfully. This however did not solve any of issues I encountered (Notifications, iMessage, FaceTime).

I attempted a second try with reset but that did not help either. On the second attempt I also got the "Press home to upgrade" message...

Unless any other ideas here I think I am going to try next Restoring to factory settings...

They found the problem with ours at the t mobile store.

Turn off the second phone line. Software is looking for a second sim card that her phone didn't have. It was trying to find the second number and couldn't because there is not one. Under settings then Cellular. New software is designed for the new iPhone 11's which have two number capability.
