iPad Air 2 iOS 13.1.2 huge issues - no wifi, can’t connect to iTunes

Hello,

I have a big problem with my iPad Air 2 since I updated to iOS 13.1.2!

  • Secured wifi networks don’t work.
  • iTunes doesn’t recognize my device.
  • Most apps crash during startup.
  • I cannot backup through iCloud since I cannot log in to my Apple ID (“Verification failed: An unknown error occurred”)

Restoring without a backup isn’t an option for me. Also, I can’t call Apple because my device is too old. Young enough for them to break it through faulty software but too old to fix it.

I tried resetting all settings multiple times, I tried turning on iCloud backup (doesn’t work), I’ve even did the update through recovery mode (the only way I can my iTunes get to recognize my iPad). But it doesn’t change anything.

Is there anything else I can do without losing my data? Can I maybe downgrade somehow from recovery mode without losing my data?

Thanks for your help!

After countless hours of trying and searching for a solution, I’ve finally solved the issue (for now). And my solution actually proves that the issue can be fixed by Apple through a software update - if they don’t, they just clearly don’t care about their users with the issue.

And here’s what I did:

  • Sign up for the iOS beta program
  • Download the iPadOS beta profile and install it
  • Install iPadOS 13.2 beta

iTunes recognizes my iPad again, I can now make a backup and even iCloud works fine again. I hope I won’t run into any more problems from now on, but my main priority for now was saving my data and I’ve achieved that.

More than a week after the original post and my iPad Air 2 suggested the update to 13.1.2 and no prizes for guessing what happened....exact same symptoms as original poster.

For me registering for the beta and installing 13.2 seems to have solved it so thank you, thank you thank you for the suggestion.

But come on Apple get the official release sorted and don’t put anymore users through the frustration and stress so many of us have suffered.

Elghandi,

Thank you for sharing your experience with the forum. I really appreciate your help.

Last night was my first available time to try your work around.

Step 1 Disable WPA2-PSK on my motorola modem/router. WPA2 was already disabled. I saved this setting.

Step 2 Disconnect my wired connection to my HP Laptop and choose the WiFi. It no longer required a password/passcode.

Step 3 Restarted my iPad Air 2 and found WiFi in list. Same as WiFi in step 2. Choose this WiFi. It was very slow in connecting but connected.

Step 4 In Settings>General>Software Update an update was offered to 13.1.3. I selected this relatively small updateof 70MB. The iPad was slow but after a few moments, started the download. It may have asked me for my pin at some point.

Step 5 Patience. The iPad eventually downloaded and installed the update.

Step 6 Once update was complete, I immediately did a backup to iCloud. It asked me for my iTunes password and this time it accepted my password and started the backup.

Step 7 I went to bed with the backup running and early this morning all is well.

I would suggest if you have a older device like this iPad Air 2, that automatic updates should be turned off. Then let a week or two pass before any attempt to update.

Also, Apple should put a check box warning in the update process to backup your device to iCloud our to your computer. This will stop the grief some of us were going through fearing loss of settings, data and etc on these updates.

Also, I appreciate Apple's support both via phone, the Apple Store and Elghandi on this matter. I also appreciate Apple getting this bug fix upgrade to market this quickly.

I watched documentaries regarding the Moon Shot 50 years ago. Our iPhones have at least 100 times the computing power that landed men on the Moon and brought all of them back home. Col. Neal Armstrong had to shut down the computer system in the last seconds due to an overloaded system and land the craft manually. Let's try to be appreciative of the long hours the Apple developers spent on these devices and the many ways that they are enhancing our existence here on earth. They saved my old iPad from extinction, saved my vital data, pictures, videos and other things that I am not even aware of. I am blessed.

Thank you, Elghandi for posting the question that led to answers. I spent a lot of time researching the same thing online and with Apple. Their answer was to restore my iPad, but it wouldn't actually reset so I just put it aside for about a week figuring I'd need to take to an Apple store.

SergSergiony and Skyhawk Mapper, thank you a thousand times for your suggestion and instructions. Using an unsecured network, I was able to connect to wifi and download the next iOS version, which fixed the issue. Yea!
