I had the same issue. The install from System Preferences>Software Update kept timing out and the install from the App Store said it could not find the update. I was able to install it using the first option in step 2 of this link: https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/reinstall-macos-mchlp1599/mac
It took about 2 hours and seemed to hang when it had 2 minutes left, I let it keep running and it took about 30 minutes after it got to the 2 minutes left mark, but it did eventually install.
It's now October 15th and this issue is still occurring. I just timed out at 4.79 Gb. Very frustrating! Apple how much longer should I wait? This is a huge waste of time. How about sending allocating updates by sending users a ticket so that we're not all trying to download at the same time or queuing us?
I've attempted updating weekly for months on end, and would always hit this issue. The download would start at around half a GB, consistently work its way up to about 4 or so GB, and then time out.
I resolved it by bring my laptop to my work office, which has faster internet than my home, and the download went to completion on my first try. Not a very satisfying resolution, but if your SOCKS proxy was already unticked like me, and booting in Safe Mode doesn't help, I'd honestly recommend finding a location with a reliably solid internet connection.
For completeness, I have a 2018 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. And also to save you the afternoon I ended up wasting, Apple Support's Downloads page does not have the Mojave -> Catalina upgrade we want; it only has Catalina patches.
Im having the same issue with a 2018 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and a 2018 Mac mini. Really frustrating. Safe mode doesn't work either, same error. I tried recovery mode and reinstalling software option but it just wants to reinstall Mojave.
I am having the same issue. Tried restarting but didn't help. I called Apple and they thought it was due to the volume of people trying to update, but I'm not sure that's accurate. I also have MacBook Pro with touchbar. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
So what I found out that works for me is going to the App Store on your Mac, then look up "Catalina" or look at the Updates section and download it from there instead of System Preferences>Software updates.
Restart the PC everytime the update aborts. When you continue to upadate after the restart, the PC will resume from the previous update download point. It worked great for me after blowing 10GB in data trying to upgrade to MacOS Catalina.
I just went ahead and forced the computer to quit by holding the OFF button(before error message!). It did quit and then booted back up. After that I was able to update Mac OS.
Go to system preferences> Network> Advanced settings>Proxies
Untick SOCKS Proxy.
Save changes.
Try again :)
you are my hero! that worked beautifully! :)
Received the same message all day and now this evening Catalina is not showing as an update option. Mac Air (Early 2015).
Facing same problem, my XCode needs update to run but my MAC OSX not updating.
Boot to safe mode and reinstall Mac OS Catelina. It works.
That didn't work for me. It only tried to re-install Mojave instead of installing Catalina.
When you boot to safe mode, go into preferences and software update and the newest update will be Mac OS Catelina.
