I have this problem too, I manually manage my Music library on my iMac 2015. After updating to Catalina I could no longer manually move music drag between the Music app and my plugged in iPhone. The iPhone icon to the left on the Music app didn't light up when I dragged music onto it.

I finally solved it.

Place the music you want to move into a new playlist on your Mac, then drag the playlist to the left hand iPhone devices entry in the Music app and its then allowed and loads OK. .

This must be a workaround to a Catalina bug, I can't believe it's intended as the only way to manually manage your music between mac and iPhone.

Hrm. This didn't work for me. I'm using the lastest software versions.

On iOs, there is no Settings -> Music -> Sync Downloads

Did you mean Settings -> Music -> Sync Library?

Also, "Sync Library" in my Music app is already unchecked. Still having no luck dragging and dropping music to iPhone 11 Pro.

COME ON APPLE!!! This is totally your fault and you're not fixing the problem.

That's a wonky workaround! But if it works, that's great. Shame on Apple for this even happening.

Questions:

Are you able to manage your playlists as well, by drag and drop?

Are all of your songs showing up right away or do you have to wait for everything to "sync" (forever)?

For the time being, I'm using Google Play Music which is so much easier. And faster. I don't have to sync, turn off sync, turn on sync, wait for hours, watch some songs appear and other get ignored....

I'm done with Apple Music and iTunes. I canceled my Apple Music subscription. If they ever fix it I might go back but until then, forget it.

I made a very detailed reply describing what i ended up doing but the post button hung up on me and the reply was lost.

In short is this: I don't see any intention from Apple to fix the problem so i gave up, i made 1 playlist and all the music i want on the iphone on the mac, i add and remove the music manually from that playlist and sync only that playlist over wifi. hope this helps anybody else stuck with this.

I've tried everything. I tried the suggestions here. I reset the location service on my phone as suggested here and now my MacBook won't recognize the phone, let alone "Apple Music."

It shouldn't be this hard to create and manage playlists. This business of turning the sync on or off on various devices is crazy. I'm done with Apple Music for good. I can't believe it's so bad. I still don't know why they even changed it except to force people to subscribe to their cloud/music service. Screw that.

I'm using Google Play Music right now which isn't too bad and will try some other alternatives. Apple needs to get its **** together. Plain and simple.

I'm a full time professional musician and for various reasons I do not need to go into here all the streaming music services SUCK for people like me.

I was actually excited about the new "Music app" which is even very hard to search for as it wants to always search for the streaming music part (not a coincidence I'm sure!) cause iTunes was such a bloated mess and moved SO slow on my machine... but the Music app is SO MUCH worse... the "search" function that we all had to SCREAM about is still just TERRIBLE... I submitted to apple support like 5 times to get the column browser back and so many others did its back.. but the search function is JUST AWFUL!!!!

But the fact that it is nearly impossible for me to just get a freaking PLAYLIST on my phone is so ridiculous.. and sort of a microcosm of Apple IMO opinion these days...

The iPod brought the company back.. then the iPhone (because most people just wanted to put their music on the same device they always could carry) made it what it is today.. but THE MOST BASIC THING the iPhone should do is just freaking TERRIBLE.

SO sad... i was such a preacher for apple products for so long and now I tell people how many times I curse at the ecosystem (of which i'm fully immersed in now) each day...

UGGG.. but seriously.... moving music to the phone is this hard!?!?! The music app and Catalina in general is terrible... I always upgrade the OS the first day.. i'm always excited.. this is the first one where I wish I never had... Catalina is THE WORST.

I noticed even when you make albums organized in the music app, the albums split apart separately when you go out of the app. The iTunes app was way better and it looks like I might be going back to Windows 10 since it has it. It makes me turned off about listening to my music collection with the new music app. I just wish Apple would listen to what smart people have to say about this situation.

There's still no way to add individual songs to your phone from a desktop, as you did previously in iTunes under IOS 13.4 and Catalina 10.15.4. A giant step backwards for Apple, who just doesn't care about restoring this much needed feature. They obviously just want you to subscribe to their streaming service instead, which I will never do. Especially after this.

Well. I finally got this to work. No thanks to Apple, who never posted how to do this or gave me an answer when I called support. But this worked for me:

plug in phone

in finder, select iphone from sidebar, then select ‘music’ at top menu bar

if needed, select ‘sync’ for ‘selected artist, albums, ect’ / apply

on Music app, select song or songs you want to move to iphone

right click, choose ‘add to devise’/choose iphone

MacOs Catalina add music manually on iPhone 11
