I have this problem too, I manually manage my Music library on my iMac 2015. After updating to Catalina I could no longer manually move music drag between the Music app and my plugged in iPhone. The iPhone icon to the left on the Music app didn't light up when I dragged music onto it.
I finally solved it.
Place the music you want to move into a new playlist on your Mac, then drag the playlist to the left hand iPhone devices entry in the Music app and its then allowed and loads OK. .
This must be a workaround to a Catalina bug, I can't believe it's intended as the only way to manually manage your music between mac and iPhone.
This is terrible by Apple. i can not manually add music to my iPhone 7. Oddly, i can only add music manually to my old iPod.
How are you able to manually add music to your old iPod? I have an iPod Classic and I'm struggling to figure out how to manage my music library now that I've updated to Catalina. Any tips?
I simply unchecked “check the box” and checked “manual”. Then in the Music App on the Mac I dragged the music to the device on the left bar
I was able to manually add music to by iPhone 7 after a restart of everything.
but No update fixes the terrible design.
My main problem right now is this: I want to add music to my iPhone, the music app sees my phone but I can’t drag. Then o restart the computer and the music app allows drag. And then it doesn’t.
This was extremely helpful & completely solved my issue.
In the Finder window, click on the iPhone in the sidebar. This will show the familiar Sync window that iTunes used to have. Same operations make it easier to veteran iTunes users.
Yep! Drag and drop works with playlists too. The songs show up right away.
You can't even view the songs on your iPhone by "Date added" anymore. By splitting iTunes into separate components, they ruined a little bit of each application!
It’s so lame this fix was not part of the latest update. It’s a way bigger issue than a lot of the other crap they fixed.
I won’t subscribe to Apple Music either. I already have Spotify for that.
The option of dragging from the Music App into the Finder with the phone selected as a location worked for me. Unbelievable!
Thank you! I had to re-sync it after doing all that but it worked. What a shame that Apple cares so little about its users that it couldn't have done this itself.
