Installed Catalina on a 2018 Macbook Pro. Ran photos and it has been sitting at :"gathering favorites, detecting duplicates, curating best photos, composing layout, etc." about 30% complete without progress bar moving for the last 30 mins. How long should it take to setup Photo's in Catalina?
Had the same problem. Photos stuck on 80-90 % for 4 days. 45000 photos and about 1100 videos in library. Today a had a little time to do some debugging. Noticed that I had 3 old avi movies in the video library that was not supported (i.e. they would not play). Deleted them from the library and voilá, Photos finished “curating....” in seconds. This worked for both my 2016 Macbook Pro and an older 2012 iMac that both had been stuck at the same percentage for 4 days. How I wish Apple would just put up an error message and tell me which files are the problem...
Thanks for your reply. I left it at 1% last night and this morning it was 89% and now it's completed and open so I've been able to check the iCloud situation. However it seems to be very slow but it looks as though I'm going to have to just be patient! At least I've now got access to the Photos app on the MBP!
I went from an '09 iMac iPhotos then Photos version to whatever came on my new iMac. I HATE IT.
It’s been weeks “beach-balling” collating...analyzing...
It gets stuck moving pics within an album.
I often see arbitrary green boxes instead of photo within year search and albums.
Rotation goes wacky - does not obey clockwise or counter clockwise command.
FREEZES or simply won’t respond to commands.
I do NOT appreciate auto-crop when I've only clicked on the top crop tab.
I do NOT appreciate it selecting auto-skin tone when I've selected neutral grays.
Red-eye is too black.
I do NOT like the retouch snapping to minuscule before I can get mouse over to photo.
I do NOT like the sidebar layout. Older version allowed optional edit values in bar and I could arrange them for ease.
WTH??? I was so looking forward to getting this new computer believing Photos would have progressed too!!!
I ONLY use this computer for PHOTOS.
Fix whatever it is giving me multiple disappointments.
Right now, I AM so sorry I got a new iMac too, Isabel.
8,000 photos, all in iCloud. Been running for a full 24 hours, stuck at aprox 90% with the Photo's app using about 10% cpu on 2016 MBP.
Could this constant "gathering, detecting, curating" etc cause some MOV file not readable with a message "cannot play video because the resource is unavailable” ?
In my Mc this is running for 5 days.
Now reached to about 75% but cannot understand why it takes that long?

i can not even get to the point to see the photos and media types. How are you able to see them? My screen is stuck on Updating Libabry?
Same here, I tried everything, rebooting, fixing the library but nothing. It is just stuck, I left a macbook pro connected to power for 7 days now and nothing happens. Please fix apple!!!

Once it gets to pictures, you may want to consider parsing even those down to the different possible formats.
