Photo's stuck on Catalina?

Installed Catalina on a 2018 Macbook Pro. Ran photos and it has been sitting at :"gathering favorites, detecting duplicates, curating best photos, composing layout, etc." about 30% complete without progress bar moving for the last 30 mins. How long should it take to setup Photo's in Catalina?

Had the same problem. Photos stuck on 80-90 % for 4 days. 45000 photos and about 1100 videos in library. Today a had a little time to do some debugging. Noticed that I had 3 old avi movies in the video library that was not supported (i.e. they would not play). Deleted them from the library and voilá, Photos finished “curating....” in seconds. This worked for both my 2016 Macbook Pro and an older 2012 iMac that both had been stuck at the same percentage for 4 days. How I wish Apple would just put up an error message and tell me which files are the problem...

definitely not solved, getting that beach ball every time trying to import from my drive. force-quit, then restart photos to only find it imported a tiny fraction of my photos each time. also agree with others that have said that photos should be programmed to take a file it has a problem with, only try for a little bit (instead of forever), and move it to a side storage. using catalina dot 3 at the moment, but figure from all the comments it's been going on since the beta of catalina? gee.

Also for me, no improvement. Still below 50% after 15 days. Proceeding very slow. I have tried all the suggestions. Two times the repair of the library. The only result was the restart of the process with same speed. I have also tried to move the library to another external hd. I have tried to log in the system with different users. Tried to change the usb cable. Tried to use an external hub for connection. Tried to clean memory also from chip. I do not have any file which seems to have problems. Somewhere I have read that Apple is authorised to upload all photos from users. Is it true? The problem could be connected somehow with Apple controls? ‘Tks Sergio

been trying for a week, Catalina dot 3 version. thought it was gonna work, finally. photos and etc on external drive. library file created same. set it to finding all new to review for imports this morning, left. came back this afternoon, it 'saw' all items (about 250,000). clicked on 'import all new items'. bang. blank. as if I hadn't done anything at all. empty library. I give up, for now.

3,835 photos remaining to be curated, at time of typing this message. So that's a further 263 done since last post.

I don't the slowness is due to an underpowered machine either. 2019 16" MacBook Pro 2.4GHz 8-core Intel Core i9, 32GB 2667 MHz DDR4.

I wonder if the curation process stops if the hard disk goes to sleep? I do have checked System Preferences > Energy Saver > "Put hard disks to sleep when possible".

This is starting to be annoying as ****

Users who contacted Apple support still has the problem and Apple seems to be doing nothing at all to solve it. They even released 10.15.3 update and did not fix the error.

I think this will be my last apple product. Until now I could say that you pay more but you have better support but considering this I cannot say that anymore.

i just spent a week importing 250,000 photos, in bite sizes. now i'm at people scanning, too. this should be interesting. photos has crashed on me a few times. version 5.0, it is. so we all know that the dot zero is like the beginning of a version. hopefully apple programmers have been paying attention to all us that have had something to say about it, and will fix bugs in short order, so we can look forward to 5.1, 5.2, etc.. I just wish it wasn't a trend that it becomes its best ever, just before the next major version release comes out (like, 6.0) and we all get thrown back to the beginning of the whole discovering bugs and fixing and updating cycle all over again..

Stil having problems too the curating part as completed but when you click on people it says faces will finish scanning when app is in background but when I go on activity monitor it only has 2 threads running ad 0% gpu and 0%cpu been “stuck” on 48 faces for many weeks. Leaving my MacBook Pro connected to power and everything always on. Can’t be a cloud issue as don’t use cloud for photos stored on my Mac.

It's really not worth the wait.

Finally upgraded to Catalina as every macOS for years has been bug-ridden for months after release to have Photos stuck on "Gathering favourites" for over a day - imagine if I had more than ONE favourite photo!

I only switched to Mac seven years ago because Windows was truly awful, Photos and iCloud hasn't worked properly sine iPhoto was removed, there's no way any professional would use these "services" surely?

No wonder there's a huge market for external storage devices.

One can read a thousand times that Apple don't monitor the discussion sites and it's best to contact them.

Yeah, do that, see what changes.

I've just upgraded my MBP to Catalina 10.15.5 from Mojave. As part of the process Photos was being updated and took a couple of days to get to 73% where it seemed to stick. I wasn't able to see anything except the progress bar and a note to say that "iCloud Photos is not turned on". But I couldn't get into Photos preferences to turn it on! Having read some of the replies in this Community I quit Photos and opened it again when it said it was 75% where again it was stuck for several hours. So I quit again and re-opened and now it's at 1% (and not moving!) and I still can't get into Photos preferences or see anything new! The library is on an external hard drive and contains 84500 photos and 1800 videos plus 1 other which I think is a pdf file. I'm beginning to wish I hadn't bothered to upgrade to Catalina. I'm hoping you'll be able to help me solve this one leonie because I can't use Photos at all and that is very frustrating for a keen photographer!!
