Photo's stuck on Catalina?

Installed Catalina on a 2018 Macbook Pro. Ran photos and it has been sitting at :"gathering favorites, detecting duplicates, curating best photos, composing layout, etc." about 30% complete without progress bar moving for the last 30 mins. How long should it take to setup Photo's in Catalina?

Had the same problem. Photos stuck on 80-90 % for 4 days. 45000 photos and about 1100 videos in library. Today a had a little time to do some debugging. Noticed that I had 3 old avi movies in the video library that was not supported (i.e. they would not play). Deleted them from the library and voilá, Photos finished “curating....” in seconds. This worked for both my 2016 Macbook Pro and an older 2012 iMac that both had been stuck at the same percentage for 4 days. How I wish Apple would just put up an error message and tell me which files are the problem...

Hi

I am really sorry for my disrespectful comments to your posts. Please accept my apologies.

You are right, the ''originals in the cloud being stuck downloading in original format to a Mac from the cloud'' does not have a solution in this thread.

As I have answered you, I was referring to this type of iCloud problem: ''I found that, for me, what solved the issue of Photos being "stuck" and not uploading from iCloud was turning off my iCloud account and then turning it back on.'' covered by Liverpool Webmaster on pages 8 10 11 13, MutantSquid on pages 6 7, cathmce on page 9.

I have misread your comments, and I have thought that the right solution for you was already covered by the 3 users listed above. Hence, me suggesting that you should read the earlier posts.

I hope it will be resolved soon.

Best of luck !

Hi, I didn't search for missing metadata however I started my library in 2002 when the first iPhoto was launched, I wouldn't be surprised if there are many old photos from 20 years ago without metadata but that shouldn't be a major problem (as long as those data are not corrupted). Also I am not using an external drive, my library is in my system's "pictures folder".

I have the same problem. 32000 photos + 300 video on external HD. Never faced problems in the past. After 3 weeks the process was completed yesterday but none of the suggestions in the forum produced positive results. Today I connected my Ipad for Sync and once more problem and the process restarted. Slow as before. Stuck and only 300 photos scanned as people in one day. What is even more frustrating that all the picture on the ipad disappeared. What to say: I always decided to use apple because of quality. It seems they do not care as in the past to the quality. What is happening to me, to the friends in the forum and probably to many others in umbelievable and not acceptable.

I've had pretty much the same problem as that described here.

I've deleted all of the corrupt files that I could find in line with suggestions.

Another call to Apple Support. This time Apple agreed to gather some data and send to its engineers. Data was collected via Activity Monitor > System Diagnostics, which generated a 318MB file, so hopefully this gives the engineers something to work with.

The Apple support person suggested that he should hear back within 3 calendar days. If anything helpful results, I'll post again.

Thanks for help. I have done what suggested. No corrupted files. No DNG. One PDF found that I deleted in Photo. At the end no results and photo stuck and people stopped at 1485 of 32000. Now I'll wait 3/4 weeks like in the scan already done. I hope that, when the "scan" would be completed, it will not restart as already happened. Sergio

I already did all the proposed solutions in this thread:

  • Checking all the library, deleting all the corrupted/innacesible videos and photos.
  • Check for DNGs and PDFs files
  • Export all the files to check for errors
  • reboot, recheck, kill services, etc...

Nothing seems to help, Photos is stuck curating the library. Any ideas? Apple fix this, my library is not ever so large (30k photos and 3k videos).

This thread shouldn't be flagged as "solved" as it's very far from being solved. I've been stuck in the "analyzing, finding duplicates etc..." for 3 weeks now, I've tried all the suggested things mentioned on above replies with no luck and i know many others are in my same situation. If anyone speaking with the costumer care finds another solution please let us know.

IsabelPaz, regards your request that I share the MacPhotos.configprofile file, as much as I'd like to help, I'm uncomfortable sharing that file for a couple of reasons, one being I don't know what compromising info of my own I might be sharing, and the other is that Apple does not consent to distribution.

Opening the MacPhotos.configprofile file with a text editor provides this is an extract of text within:

The Photos, iCloud Photos, and CloudKit Diagnostics Profile generates files that allow Apple to troubleshoot issues with your macOS device and help Apple to improve Photos, iCloud Photos, CloudKit and related products and services. The generated log files may contain information that could be considered your personal information, including your location, IP address, crashlogs, iCloud account information, and photo metadata such as file names, the names of your shared albums, the names of people, and related information, including addresses, emails and phone numbers, from your contacts database locations, objects and scenes in your photos, and calendar events associated with your photos and memories, statistics about your photo library such as counts and titles of photos, moments, and the age of your photos, information related to each of your memories, the names of computers registered with your iCloud account and the full path names of your stored documents. This profile will expire after 14 days.

Also ...

By enabling this diagnostic tool and sending a copy of the generated files to Apple, you are consenting to Apples use of the content of such files in accordance with its privacy policy (http://www.apple.com/legal/privacy).

@slugdog Thank you for your reply. I completely understand your position, no problem at all.

However I was able to find that profile as part as the developer documentation:

https://developer.apple.com/bug-reporting/profiles-and-logs/

It also contains a pdf with instructions. The name of the file is slightly different (Photos_macos.mobileconfig) but I think it is the same file.

Let's hope that we can find the source of the problem or a way to manually solve it since it seems that Apple doesn't care at all.

I've not yet heard back from Apple Support since my last post, however the number of photos remaining has reduced from 8,000+ to 4,236.

My guess is that maybe it reaches a large video file or something, and then progresses extremely slowly?? I don't know if there's a way to filter for videos over a specified duration. I have 4,224 videos. It'd also be nice to be able to filter for files curated / not curated, or some other mechanism for ascertaining progress.
