Photo's stuck on Catalina?

Installed Catalina on a 2018 Macbook Pro. Ran photos and it has been sitting at :"gathering favorites, detecting duplicates, curating best photos, composing layout, etc." about 30% complete without progress bar moving for the last 30 mins. How long should it take to setup Photo's in Catalina?

Had the same problem. Photos stuck on 80-90 % for 4 days. 45000 photos and about 1100 videos in library. Today a had a little time to do some debugging. Noticed that I had 3 old avi movies in the video library that was not supported (i.e. they would not play). Deleted them from the library and voilá, Photos finished “curating....” in seconds. This worked for both my 2016 Macbook Pro and an older 2012 iMac that both had been stuck at the same percentage for 4 days. How I wish Apple would just put up an error message and tell me which files are the problem...

1)my computer has been 'curating' for 3 days now,

2) during this process, my storage on Macbook went from 90GB down to currently 69.7GB,

3) my 60% of my Photo ALBUMS have disappeared and the ones I see look like are from iPhoto 4 years ago

4) Apple has been randomly duplicating photos in my iPhoto/(now)Photo for several iOS's now....

5) I believe it's Duplicating the whole library since storage is decreasing before my eyes during Curating

6) Photos are being Duplicated and RENAMED with WRONG DATES and MOVED around in diff years!

Apple Support said that maybe my Albums will reappear after curating is done (but maybe not) !!! And Photos on Macbook hasn't imported Photo Albums from iPhone for YEARS either.... (but imports individual photos)... so now my problem with Photo Albums is tenfold, iPhoto library is GONE and not supported by Catalina, And I was never aware that I was supposed to Merge those libraries/Never prompted and now it doesn't even exist on Macbook any more. Now it's a whole different Photo Album list in my library-from like 5(?) years ago.

Even after reboot Apple Photos is stuck in an endless loop of "detecting duplicates", "gathering favourites", "curating best photos", "composing layout" and "analysing scenes". How is it possible that with all its resources Apple is not able to provide a stable solution for simple tasks like uploading photos? These kinds of situations never happen with other cloud providers like Google or Microsoft. Very disappointed.

I am not uploading tho. I am downloading a remaining 128 items.

so if I log out and in, the first thing that will happen is my computer will attempt to UPload 110k items that have already made it onto my computer from the cloud TO the cloud. The cloud will compare item by item, checking to see if each and every item from my computer is up there already. They are of course, but it will take a week minimum for that to finish checking. After those items are checked the cloud/computer will go back to trying to download remaining items from cloud to computer

The video and audio formats supported on a Mac

There are just a handful of audio and video files that are recognized by a Macintosh computer. And that must be one of the reasons why not some users think of these machines as not very user-friendly. The video files supported on a Mac are as follows:

  • QuickTime Movie - mov
  • MPEG-4 - m4v, mp4
  • MPEG-2, MPEG-1
  • 3GPP, 3GPP2
  • AVCHD
  • AVI
  • DV

There is no doubt that the best video format for a Mac is the native QuickTime file, MOV. This video file format is supported even by the earlier versions of the Mac OS. Alternately, the MPEG-4 format is the best one for the newest versions.

For audio file types that are playable on a Mac are the following:

  • iTunes Audio - m4p, m4b, m4a, Core Audio - caf, MP3, AIFF, SD2, AU, WAV, AMR, SND.

"It started to freeze and crash very frequently and memory got saturated."

You're telling me!!!

I can't go back without a lot of hassle either, but my iMac is now constantly crashing, beachballing, VERY slow - and it wasn't before Catalina.

But will Apple do anything about it, will they heck!!!

With all the posts above - and many other Catalina performance issues posts elsewhere - isn't about time Apple stepped up to the plate and do what they pride themselves on ie high quality product and customer service?

Exactly the same story going here too!, so it's happening to many of us. My mbPro is 70% stuck, doing it's thing, yet on my iMac, it was completed very fast. On my dear little MacBook Air, it's so old (2013), I still have the old Photo's Program layout. So 'pleased' he's too old for this Catalina, I was quite happy with the old version! Anyway, stuck it is.

And those photo's of the years?, it uses the first photo you took 'that' year. Extremely annoying and how can I put a photo of my wedding as 2018? instead of a grey raining back yard. Must be a button to press?, so, I'm stuck, I don't like the Year icons at all and it's all getting far too virtual for my liking. Such is the modern world hey!, another new program layout to sort. Editing tools aren't that impressive either!...... I think Mac will update Photos again very soon, loads of complaints. :-) Mark, Amsterdam.

This is a long thread and I've been working on this problem since Oct 10 ... so to your point, yes, I have been involved in this thread and read updates as they arrive in my mailbox. Each post I've read seems to address your curation issue.

Can you point me toward the iOS problem solution? Wouldn't that have been easier than the nasty reply? 15 page thread with 225 replies. Are your referring to the solution of turning my computer off then on? Was looking for a little more than that

Hi

“Give it a search..“ is in no way a nasty reply :)

In my quest, searching through all the replys to find what I wanted is exactly what I‘ve done.

„Perpetual downloading of newly shot iOS original sized files from iCloud „ - is this thing a Mac or iOS problem?

Where does this Perpetual downloading happen? On your Mac or on your phone?

If it is on the Mac, than search through the posts, the answer is there. Am I suppoed to search and link it back for you? That is why I wrote „Give it a search..“

If it is an iOS problem, than I do not have any solution for you, as I do not recall anybody bringing this matter on the thread.

Have a very productive week!!

drpv solution "Search one more time through your Photos the way I have described it in a post above.

It will finish in a few minutes." may have worked for him but not for me. I did what suggested, I have a very good sight, I went carefully through all my library scrolling with the arrow (took me 2 days) and found no damaged photos with grey or white thumbnail. I am still stuck at "Analyzing bla bla bla".
