Photo's stuck on Catalina?

Finally it completed all tasks. 😁

But now Catalina is doing some other strange thing:

 BackgroundTask named: "com.apple.apfsd.wbc_drain" 

which prevent my iMac to go to sleep automatic.

I guess that it will run for the next month or so ...... 😩

Apple what have you done ?

Thanks a lot. I did that. Checked everything. All the videos look OK. And I had already eliminated the ones > 2 minutes. Tough luck. Still waiting. Reluctant to start again from scratch because it is a VERY long process. Infinity is a long time, especially near the end. Thanks anyway. Much appreciated.

Thanks. I also looked at the process and it seems to be running irrespective of the Photos app being open or closed. It is just that my progress bar has been stuck at a very low level for nearly 3 weeks now. It has not moved at all. And I keep the Mac powered on all the time. Not so sure about a bloody good app though :-) I wouldn't go that far.

Ha ha yes, maybe that was a step too far as I to have had a lot of trouble and sleepless nights working about losing my photos...repairing...backing up then corrupt.... if it did work faster and as it should then searching etc of photos should be good.

I'm at the redownload entire library from cloud step. My library is about 95000 pics, 10000 videos, total of 1.7 TB.

I think about 1.58TB has downloaded from cloud somewhat quickly (48 hours) but I'm stuck at "Downloading 410 items" message. When I look at activity monitor I don't see much going on.

When I click on the People folder it shows that about 43% of my library has been scanned. Can I expect the download progress to pick up once the library has been scanned in its entirety? Just seems weird to be hanging up on so the last 4% of my library (410 items)

Further, if face analysis occurs only when the app is close (Photos on my mac), should I keep the app closed for now and if so will that halt the "download" of remaining 410 items?

UPDATE. I have spent 2 - 3 hours with an Apple help person. I have had three recordings of the computer/Photos activities and the Apple engineers are looking at it now. They are taking it quite seriously. I believe that, when they see what is causing the curation process to stop that there will be an update.

Painful for now, but at least they have listened and are actively sorting it out.

My question is should you keep Photos open or closed. I know you need to be plugged in for the process to work but not sure as to having Photos open or closed. I called Apple Support on this, and if I recall correctly, they said keep Photos closed, but either way I don't see that I am making any progress and it has been weeks. I have about 20,000 photos and 500 videos. Any thoughts?

Thanks for quick response. I'll try open and minimize for a while as I have been keeping it closed most of the time. Let's see if that makes any progress. And maybe that was what Apple support was referring to when he suggested keeping it closed - that is how it will work best for face scanning. It sure is a conundrum.

I’ve eventually had my case referred to the development team, after having spent hours on the phone to the creative team and doing a 2nd library repair so let’s see what that produces. A lot of the staff I spoke to didn’t have a clue what the analysing of library was about and that it was something I’d asked it to do which is slightly worrying!

yeah i hear you. would be nice for some feedback. i escalated my matter to engineering in the hopes my pain would help lead to a solution of some kind. unfortunately, my interactions with engineering are on hold until my sync is complete. but what if it doesn't complete? lol . i mean i hope it does by 2020.

In Preferences under Photos I have the bottom two boxes checked - My Photo Stream and Shared Albums. But not the top one, iCloud Photos, as I don't really want to buy more space in the Cloud. I have about 20k pictures and 500 short videos (which I need to clean up, btw). Any thoughts on that?

In some of the conversations on this topic, I have seen some reference to identifying progress being made in the process. Other than the progress line being at about 80% for weeks, is there another way to decipher what progress is being made. I know something is going on as I keep getting those rotating notes - Analyzing...Gathering...Detecting...but wondering if there is some other way to detect progress.

That’s interesting that you say “Apple are aware of it” that’s certainly not the impression Ive had after the hours I’ve spent on the phone to them. Hopefully you get a resolution and I look forward to it being rolled out in an update.

They are. I have had several sessions. They have put photos through its paces and recorded both that and system activities. The engineers are working on it. They will get back to me some time.

i found that photos crashed several times today, especially when I rotated the image.

i will let them know that as well.

I have a 2019 iMac, I have tried many of the suggestions here, but my iPhotos has been stuck in this process for 7 weeks!!

My MacBook Pro Retina worked within about 10 mins, frustrating. Why doesn't apple consider issuing fix files like FixIT surely it would be helpful!!

I'm going to dedicate another evening to it tonight, I'll report back any success.
