White screen with EGPU only connected

I'm using a Radeon RX580 epug with my 2018 mac mini. If I try to boot with Catalina with only the egpu connected I just get white screen on boot. However if I boot with a combination of a monitor attached to the hdmi port and the egpu connected to other monitors, then the mac will boot correctly. It's very strange because the egpu works, but not without a hdmi display connected to the mini. Has anyone else had this bug and any suggestions? For now I'll just keep a hdmi display attached.

I can confirm that the latest public beta does fix the issue. It seems like it also did a firmware update to the MacMini. It's crazy that Apple would break something so important and never comment on the issue. But they seem to prefer quietly fixing issues without ever admitting there was a problem.

2018 Mac Mini i7 with a Radeon RX580 8GB using eGFX Breakaway Box with 550W Power Supply. It was working great until I upgraded....to Catalina which now gives me a white screen on boot. If I unplug it during the white screen and plug it back it, then it goes normal. I cant boot the computer with the Breakaway Box plugged in or I just get the white screen. Is Apple not going to do anything about this?

macOS 10.15.2 just broke my Mac mini with Razer EGPU and AMD Vega 56 card. It was working perfect before. Now I have to unplug the hdmi form the EGPU, plug directly into the Mac mini and once the mini reboots then I can plug the hdmi back to the gpu. I have reset the pram and nvram and it started successfully. I am afraid to reboot it since it is working for now. Please apple fix this.

On Mac mini 2018+RX 580 eGPU.

Like others reported, 10.15.2 update left me a black screen when the mac restarted for the update. Switching to non-eGPU output did not help, but a force shutdown and boot without eGPU connection helped me into the system. Notice there is a roughly 8-min update process during the first boot, and that might be the reason eGPU gave you black screen.

After the update is fully completed, I shutdown the mac again, plugged in the video cable from eGPU, and boot the mac again like in 15.10.1 (my way is to turn on mac without eGPU on, input password blindly, and wait a while until the the boot process is complete, then turn on the power for eGPU; this bypasses seeing a white screen and forcefully shutdown once during the process). It works.

I hate this situation because after some months from Catalina the Apple didn’t find a solution to problem.

in the last upgrade was more bad because Mac mini started with black display of death.

the only way for work my egpu is connect Mac mini’s hdmi and Egpu DisplayPort to my monitor.

Dear Apple I spent a lot of money for you products (I have iPads,iPhone, MacBook Pro and mini) and you don’t spend resources for fix a stupid problem with Egpu.

ps. I have Egpu with rx 580

I am more than tired of all this drama. Apple is not the company we all used to be fanboys for.

Plugging...unplugging...rebooting...standing on one leg...ridiculous! What happened to "it just works." Apple has played bait and switch with their "used to be" support for the eGPUs and the AMD video cards. Most of us have been out around a grand to end up with a boat anchor.

How very sad for their customers.

After the update 10.15.2 I have noticed that I cannot boot into Mac OS when I only use eGPU + monitor. The workaround is to type password blindly, then in couple of seconds Mac mini Boots into OS via eGPU. This must be software related as it worked before the update. If you use Bluetooth keyboard, couple of first keystrokes may not be registered. I hit random letter and backspace 2 times and then start to type my log in password.

I was able to upgrade with a 2018 mini and a 5700xt but it wasn't pretty... I disconnected my OWC 550W GPU and connected via HDMI to the mini and the screen went black once the installer started... waited 10 minutes still no screen. Powered off (still with HDMI only) and restarted to see that the install was to take 45 minutes.

Once completed I plugged in the eGPU and switched the HDMI back to the eGPU Displayport and all is working fine.

However, I have not rebooted yet with the eGPU on (little scared at this point it will only work if hot plugged as before).
