White screen with EGPU only connected

I'm using a Radeon RX580 epug with my 2018 mac mini. If I try to boot with Catalina with only the egpu connected I just get white screen on boot. However if I boot with a combination of a monitor attached to the hdmi port and the egpu connected to other monitors, then the mac will boot correctly. It's very strange because the egpu works, but not without a hdmi display connected to the mini. Has anyone else had this bug and any suggestions? For now I'll just keep a hdmi display attached.

I can confirm that the latest public beta does fix the issue. It seems like it also did a firmware update to the MacMini. It's crazy that Apple would break something so important and never comment on the issue. But they seem to prefer quietly fixing issues without ever admitting there was a problem.

Hey Yockster, do you have any idea when 10.15.4 will be released? Do you think that I will be able to skip 10.15.3 and go to .4 directly when it is released?

I am still on 10.15.2 and can work around the issue by waiting about 5 seconds after booting the Mini before I power up the EGPU. When I do this, I can log in normally. If I do a restart, I have to kill the power to the EGPU until I guess that it is past its initial boot sequence. I usually wait to hear my external back-up drive start to power up, then flick the power on on the EGPU.

I am sorry but the .4 beta still does not fix the issue in my case. :((

The latest update changed the bootrom to 1037.100.321.0.0 (iBridge: 17.16.14226.5.3,0)

Now there is no Apple logo during boot with eGPU - only a blank black screen (no more white screen of death though). The display does not go to sleep but the OS does not boot either. The GPU fans now don't rev up which is an improvement. Only if I turn off the eGPU completely beforehand and then turn on the Mac (with the display connected directly to the Mac) can the system boot up. Once I reach the login screen I can turn on the eGPU.

Why Apple????!!!!

rsmith4321 - please don't set the issue to Solved. :) I understand that in your specific configuration the issue seems to be solved but in my case (and probably for others as well) the only improvement is that instead of a "White screen" I get a "Black screen". I don't consider this a real solution (although in a technical sense the thread title "White screen with EGPU only connected" is no longer fully relevant ;)).

For me, it isn't fixed completely with the latest public beta. The white screen is gone but sometimes it ends up in an black screen and sometimes it is working now. But I also mentioned that the first time since I have my eGPU, my LG Monitor is recognized as a HDR monitor. But the colors are weird if I set it to the HDR mode. My setup is a Mac mini 2018 with Razer Core X + RX590. Hopefully they will fix it completely in the next beta.

I have a Mac mini 2018 + Sonnet egpu with rx570. It seems to reboot successfully most times as long as I have one monitor plugged directly into the Mac mini. I don’t use boot camp so can’t comment on the unfortunately.

it will not boot if both screens are connected to my egpu which is a shame.

but it’s a massive improvement from not booting at all with the egpu switched on for over 12 months.

Mac Mini 2018 + eGPU RX580 (Gigabyte), running 10.15.4 official version released 3/24. It's not better, but showed a different problem: with eGPU powered on and connected, powering on the Mac Mini gives me blank black screen (but not no signal from the DisplayPort; it has signal, just pure black). It does not boot into the system. Had to long press power to force shutdown, then power on without eGPU.

Really expected Apple to make some progress in 10.15.4, but totally disappointed.

10.15.4 has fixed the white screen but now causes a much worse problem. If I reboot with the screen on no matter what I do the screen remains black. I unplug, replug, turn off screen, turn off eGPU... nothing will bring back the logon screen. I have to hold the power until the Mac Mini turns off then reboot with the screen off. If I shut down normally and then turn on the computer it boots fine now.

I'm fed up with this. All of these issues started after I upgraded to Catalina. Parallels randomly crashes and I worked with them for a week with no luck. It just doesn't work anymore. I has to get VMWare Fusion and now that seems to work fine. I haven't upgraded my laptop and I probably wont after all these issues. I'm going to send my Mac Mini for servicing until they either replace it or the fix it.

I just installed 10.15.4. I get a black screen when trying to boot with the eGPU connected and monitors connected directly to the EGPU (no monitor directly connected to the Mac Mini). Unable to login. Force shutdown, disconnect the eGPU and plug one of monitors into the Mac Mini and it starts fine. Then I can plug the eGPU in.

It's been 6 months and 4 updates since this thread started. I doubt the problem will ever be fixed by Apple.

10.15.4 works fine for me. Config: 2018 Mac Mini, RX570 in Breakaway Box, two monitors. FileVault enabled.

Left monitor is connected to two port HDMI switch: one port Mac Mini HDMI port, the other to RX570 HDMI.

Right Monitor connected to DisplayPort on RX570.

Before restart or boot, I switch the left monitor HDMI switch to the Mini.  Once booted I switch it back to R570.

I have had no problems with this configuration.  While it is booting I may see some strange stuff on the right monitor, but that clears up by the end of the boot process.  The right monitor is my primary monitor (in Display Preferences).

Presumably you could do this just using different inputs on the monitor, but the HDMI switch was more convenient in my setup.

I'm glad you're happy with the setup.

I don't call having to use an HDMI switch (or any of the other methods that have been posted in the discussion) in order to boot as working fine. Systems (prior to Catalina and then prior to the boot changes made to Mojave) use to boot with monitors only attached to the eGPU. Apple broke it and has yet to fix it.
