Hello Debbie
Before installing the latest driver software, it will require that we uninstall any currently installed j5create device driver first.
Please uninstall the driver software for the j5create USB adapter by doing the following:
1. Click on the desktop background
2. In the upper left-corner of the display, locate and select "Go" then select "Computer".
3. Select "Macintosh HD".
4. Select "Library".
5. Select "Extensions".
6. Find the following: "AX88179_178a", "MCT_trigger2.kext", "Trigger5Core.kext", "DJTVirtualDisplayDriver", "MCTTrigger6USB" and/or "MCTTriggerGraphics.plugin.
7. If any of these files exist, drag each of them to the trashcan.
After completing the uninstall process, proceed with the following:
Immediately after installing the device driver, please do the following:
Finally, after the computer has fully rebooted, plug the display adapter into a USB port directly on the computer, then connect the video cable into the video OUT port on the j5create adapter and into the video IN port on the display. Power on the display and ensure that the display is on the correct input mode, i.e. on VGA, HDMI, DVI. From here, on the connected display, you should see the desktop background and the display should now be ready to use.
However, if the display does not activate after everything has been connected, I recommend that you do the following:
Please be aware, If you are running the official release of macOS 10.15, we do not guarantee that this driver will allow for optimal functionality of j5create USB display adapter on your system. However, the driver being provided has been tested with the official macOS 10.15 Catalina release and we can confirm that the driver should allow for moderate functionality of the j5create device on macOS 10.15. Depending on your system specifications, you may experience general bugs. General bugs/glitches are to be expected with the beta driver, however we welcome all feedback!
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns regarding to this matter!

I just got off the phone with Apple Support. So it sounds like their sending a bunch of tickets to the engineers to get a bug fix in for the next Catalina update.
Meanwhile, there's at least one workaround that worked for me.
Go to Security & Privacy in System Preferences and uncheck "Require password after sleep or screen saver begins." It sleeps fine now, but it's not ideal in the short term if you need your password lock every time.
OK, so I just got off the phone with an Apple advisor/technician and we solved this issue :-) Please be carefull when making any changes to your computer. I am just reiterating what the tech told me what to do so proceed at your own will :-) (Just covering my back side)
We found an unsupported file called Trigger5Core.kext and I moved it to my trash as well as copying it to my desktop (just in case I need to replace it later) then I removed it from my trash but again, keep a copy of it somewhere other than the library it was found, just in case' Then turned off the computer by going to and selecting "Shut Down" which took a bit longer than normal, and in fact I ended up having to push and holding the power button, but the etch told me to do it this way rather than just pushing power off right away. Then power the computer back up which also took longer than normal, but then BINGO ! it works now!
The tech had files on this issue that some people that did this proceeder also lost compatibility there USB C hub if they had one but I don't so I went ahead and moved it any way.
1. Press Command Key(⌘) + Shift + C
2. Select "Macintosh HD".
3. Select "System".
4. Select "Library".
5. Select "Extensions".
6. Find the following: "Trigger5Core.kext"
7. If you find this file copy it to your desktop then delete it from the library.
8. Other files that caused a similar problem where "MCT_trigger2.kext" and "triggers.kext" I found them but left them in there as these did not effect me, but others have removed them (after copying them)
Hope this helps others out.
Hooray for this thread! FINALLY fixed without a fresh install! I'm glad i held out!
I have a new 2019 mbp, but i had the J5 Create dock with my previous MBP. Those drivers did indeed come over to the new mac with the time machine restore. I transferred from old mac to new mac and then upgraded the new mac from mojave to catalina and that's when this issue started. I deleted the drivers listed below and rebooted and boom! It's waking from sleep again. I do have the TS3 Plus dock and it is still working just fine without these files. Good luck everyone, I hope it's this easy for all of you!
Macintosh HD > Library > Extensions.
You may find Trigger5Core.kext, MCTTrigger6USB.kext, MCTTriggerGraphics.plugin, and DJTVirtualDisplayDriver.kext.
These are all part of the J5create drivers.
I HAVE THE FIX.....so far. After spending 2 hours on a chat with Apple support this is what worked.
Go to Finder > Go > Go to folder. Type in Library/Extensions and once there, find and delete any of these that may show up there, in order.
MCTTriggerGraphics.plugin
Trigger5Core.kext
MCTTrigger6USB.kext
MCTTrigger2.kext
DJTVirtualDisplayDriver.kext
Then go to /Library/LaunchDaemons and find and delete tw.com.mct.TriggerDriver.plist
Then go to /Library/LaunchAgents and find and delete tw.com.mct.TriggerDriver.plist
Then empty trash and restart the computer.
Does anyone have any j5Create device drivers installed? If so, this may be the root cause or some other driver. I just did a fresh install over the weekend, testing after each app install, and it failed after the driver install for j5Create. After I uninstalled the driver and tested again, the problem went away. Just thought I would update everyone my findings, because I spent 4 hrs on the phone with support last week with no resolution.
FYI-
Take a look at https://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/dfq969/mac_screen_wont_wake_from_sleep_after_catalina/. From what I have read, there are 32 bit drivers that are not happy in the 64 bit world. It looks like a J5 video driver issue. It's the usb to video dongle.
Not from me:

I've been dealing with this for almost a week now. I had tried resetting the NVRAM and the SIP without success. I finally saw a solution from 2016 where people were seeing similar issues because of some display drivers they had installed. For me it was some drivers installed by j5create, a company that makes various peripheral devices.
I tested out their solution and it worked. In my /Library/Extensions/ folder I deleted MCTTrigger6USB.kext, MCTTriggerGraphics.plugin, and Trigger5Core.kext, which were drivers installed by the j5 software. Next time my computer woke from sleep the display came back without issue.
So my suggestion is, if no solution has worked for you so far, check your /Library/Extensions/ folder for any display drivers. Google the driver name before deleting it to verify it's not something critical, then try deleting and testing.
I also just went to the j5 site and saw this message:
At this time, our display driver software does not fully support macOS® 10.15 Catalina. We recommend all users delay in updating to the new operating system until official j5create drivers are released.
Since I don't use my j5 device anymore I just deleted the drivers.
Hopefully this will help someone and prevent any headaches.

Note others have suggested removing anything older than 2016, but removing these three drivers did the trick for me. Problem has not reoccurred.
But, if you don't have the J5, nuking old drivers is a good place to start. (Look at video drivers imho)

My J5 is going in the trash. (USB video adapter)

Hey guys. I'm following the thread for a couple of days now as I had the same issue. Tried everything from resetting SMC and NRRAM and all the other suggestions. Thanks to the community for the help!
What did finally help me was running the kextstat command and uninstalling the one kext, that was loaded and did not come from Apple (which are prefixed by com.apple.). In my case the kext was from my Malwarebytes installation. After uninstalling Malwarebytes I ran a couple of tests (just closing the lid, selecting "Sleep" from the Apple Menu, changing the "Require password xx minutes after sleep or screen saver begins") and I seem to have removed the wake up issue.
So my advice would be: Try to find non-apple kext's being loaded and remove them from the system.
Not great, as my virus scanner is now gone, yet better that having your Mac restart hard on every wake.
I've found after researching for many days that this could be quite a few things. I had these exact same symptoms after upgrading to Catalina and the culprit turned out to be a file called com.apple.mediaanalysisd.plist inside the /System/Library/LaunchAgents folder.
What would happen was that after roughly 5-10 minutes of idle, the system would hang after the mediaanalysisisd process ran wild with CPU power. Developed a kernel panic and crashed. To get rid of this file (make a backup first), I had to :
You may want to enter into recovery mode again and instead of typing in csrutil disable, type csrutil enable and then reboot again.
This fixed the freezing after 10 minutes as well as the system not responding to wake requests.
If you system is freezing after 10 minutes, a good troubleshooting technique is to open Activity Monitor (CPU tab) in Applications/Utilities, and just sit and watch without touching anything. Watch to see what processes jumped to the top when the freeze occurred. Those are likely to blame. Mine happened to be mediaanalysisd, but yours could be different. At least it'll give you a starting point to look into.
I was having this problem on a 15" MBP 2019, then again on the 16" 2019 MBP I swapped it for.
Basically, your Catalina install comes with a bunch of extensions for running RAID hard drives (most users won't ever do this). Something about at least one of them is broken. I haven't worked out exactly which ones cause the problem, but they can all be safely removed if you don't use RAID HDDs.
They can be found in MacintoshHD>Library>Extensions. Make sure you're looking the right right Library folder, you want the one on in Macintosh HD, NOT the one under your username. I made a backup of them just in case, then cleared out the following .kext files:
ACS6x
ArcMSR
ATTOCelerityFC8
ATTOExpressSASHBA2
ATTOExpressSASRAID2
CalDigitHDProDrv
HighPointIOP
HighPointRR
PromiseSTEX
SoftRAID
Since I was on a very fresh install, I expect these are all the ones which come with Catalina as standard. My machine has since been waking from sleep successfully and quickly every time, even with multiple displays and USB-C devices plugged in.
Reset the NVRAM, as per > Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
Then if that doesn't fix it > Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support
Turning off Power Nap was the instant fix for me.
Same issue with MacBook Pro Fall 2016. I tried resetting NVRAM and no luck. I then tried Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support, put my Mac to sleep in Safe Mode, and was able to wake it. Rebooted and am now able to wake it up without problems.
I also use a j5create dock. I removed their extensions and that seems to have solved my problems. They also have posted on their website to not download their drivers if you've upgraded to Catalina. I think their products are great and their customer service is really good. Incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Will wait for the updated drivers.
