mac wont wake from sleep after Catalina upgrade

Upgraded to Catalina several hours ago. iMac has gone to "sleep" 4 times and each time failed to "wake". Had to do "hard reboot". Anyone else?

Same here. After update to Catalina my Mac will not wake from sleep following inactivity or forced sleep.  Ran first aid with no problems detected, and energy saver settings are set to default. Not good.

@fleurdelis8

I was having the same issues as everyone and tried the NVRAM with no luck. I did follow your instructions on Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support, and put my Mac Pro 15 to sleep in safe mode a few times and restarted. It is working great and the new Catalina appears to be faster, charges the battery faster and is much brighter on the screens.

I am having an issue with Displaylink working to drive my 3 24" monitors which I will look for any relevant posts.

Thank you for posting this suggestion!

I have the Macbook Pro 2016 with Touch Bar and I had this same issue. I thought the issue was related to DisplayLink due to this article: https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/1925041-macos-catalina-10-15-black-screen-or-only-one-mon

I followed the steps provided except step 7 as I was still having the issue.

So I reset the SMC and NVRAM as recommended in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204760.

The problem is now resolved.

Issue: With new MAC OS Catalina 10.15.1, System Sleep Wake Issues (open lid after sleep

Tried this suggestion (below) on my MacBookAir 2018 ---

Reset the NVRAM, as per > Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Then if that doesn't fix it > Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

Hi, I've tried what Tony Jeffree posted, but I only deleted the files in the Extensions folder which created in 2019. I didn't disable the automatic graphics switching. I have heavy load with my computer: I run parallels desktop and opened 50+ Safari tabs, and using Photos simultaneously, and my computer can wake up correctly/instantly. (But sometimes my computer did go into safe sleep so a single click of the power button is required, but no work loss, all apps/tabs are fine.)

Hope you can solve it!

I contacted J5 create customer service and they said they had a work around until new driver is updated:

It worked for me:

j5create Customer Service (Support Ticket System - j5create)

Oct 15, 2:32 PM EDT

Hello Debbie

Before installing the latest driver software, it will require that we uninstall any currently installed j5create device driver first.

Please uninstall the driver software for the j5create USB adapter by doing the following:

1. Click on the desktop background

2. In the upper left-corner of the display, locate and select "Go" then select "Computer".

3. Select "Macintosh HD".

4. Select "Library".

5. Select "Extensions".

6. Find the following: "AX88179_178a", "MCT_trigger2.kext", "Trigger5Core.kext", "DJTVirtualDisplayDriver", "MCTTrigger6USB" and/or "MCTTriggerGraphics.plugin.

7. If any of these files exist, drag each of them to the trashcan.

After completing the uninstall process, proceed with the following

  1. Click on the link below, from the link select "Download" to download the driver install file:
  2. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1PjCh4IlcJ6s7Y2UXRTC_6US8jDXxWbp4

  3. Open Finder, then select Downloads
  4. Locate and right-click on the file labeled as: "J5craete_...,,select "Open" then "OK".
  5. Select "Open" when prompted, then proceed through the installation process to completion, i.e. select "Continue", "Install", and enter your password when prompted.
  6. Select "Restart" to complete the installation and restart the computer.

Immediately after installing the device driver, please do the following:

  1. Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General
  2. From Security & Privacy, click the padlock icon in the lower-left corner, then enter your user login password when you are prompted for it.

  3. -While the driver is being blocked, you will see a message stating"System software from developer "Magic Control Technology Corp.","Asix Electronics", "WEI LU SU", and/or "Philip Jordan" was blocked from loading.", and the option to select "Allow".

  4. Select "Allow" to enable our drivers from "Magic Control Technology Corp.", "Asix Electronics", "WEI LU SU", and/or "Philip Jordan"
  5. Note: If you have previously installed and allowed these drivers, you will not need to re-allow the drivers. Please proceed to step #4
  6. From, System Preferences > Security & Privacy, select the Privacy tab.
  7. Along the left-pane, locate and select Screen Recording
  8. Check-Mark the box for "DJTVirtualDisplayAgent"
  9. Click the padlock icon in the lower-left corner to save all changes.
  10. Click the Apple Menu icon, select Shut Down...
  11. After ~15 seconds, press the power button to power the computer back on.

Finally, after the computer has fully rebooted, plug the display adapter into a USB port directly on the computer, then connect the video cable into the video OUT port on the j5create adapter and into the video IN port on the display. Power on the display and ensure that the display is on the correct input mode, i.e. on VGA, HDMI, DVI. From here, on the connected display, you should see the desktop background and the display should now be ready to use.

However, if the display does not activate after everything has been connected, I recommend that you do the following:

  1. Disconnect/reconnect the video cable from/to the j5create USB display adapter.
  2. Open System Preferences > Display > Arrangement
  3. Check, then un-check, the option for Mirror Displays.

Please be aware, If you are running the official release of macOS 10.15, we do not guarantee that this driver will allow for optimal functionality of j5create USB display adapter on your system. However, the driver being provided has been tested with the official macOS 10.15 Catalina release and we can confirm that the driver should allow for moderate functionality of the j5create device on macOS 10.15. Depending on your system specifications, you may experience general bugs. General bugs/glitches are to be expected with the beta driver, however we welcome all feedback!

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns regarding to this matter!

I had the same issue, MacBook Air not waking from sleep or not starting when power button was pressed. It only woke occasionally after a day or more, after taking multiple steps in random order (like SMC reset) - so can't help with that. The NVRAM/PRAM reset didn't have effect for my case. But this weekend when it was awake I was able to remove the cause of the issue for me with help of the Apple Support chat.

  • They asked me to check some folders in the library folder:
    • Click "Go" in the menu bar
    • Select "Computer"
    • Select "Library"
    • Check the "LaunchAgents" & "LaunchDaemons" folders for possible unsupported files
      • In my case it was quite clear which file caused the problem, but leave at least all files mentioning apple or macos
      • For me files mentioning adobe & microsoft didn't cause the problem
    • Move the file which you think causes the issue to your desktop before deleting - if it has no effect and it causes problems with some apps you always can place it back
  • To rule out any user specific issues he asked me to check the user related files
    • Click "Go" in the menu bar
    • When pressing your option key, select "Library" that will appear
    • Check the "LaunchAgents" & "LaunchDaemons" folders for possible unsupported files
    • If you have multiple users, you might want to check them all, but for me only the admin user had a file that had to be removed

After that I was asked to try and see if that solved it, the scary part, but my MBA didn't fail to wake since.

So hope that this can help others too.

My laptop sometimes starts, sometimes no. WHY? HOW? WHEN?

Sincerely I don't know.

I use it, turn it off and it doesn't start again (not always).

BUT

If your Mac doesn't start up anymore, you can try this absolutely RANDOM AND TEMPORARY workaround:

  1. turn on your Mac, when the "?" folder appears insert a BOOTABLE LINUX pen drive.
  2. Use it for a some minutes*
  3. Turn it off
  4. Restart the Mac and, for mine, it's magically start up.

*30 minutes, 60 minutes

I DON'T KNOW WHY DOING THIS THE MAC STARTS but is the only way that I use when my mbp no longer start.

I've found after researching for many days that this could be quite a few things. I had these exact same symptoms after upgrading to Catalina and the culprit turned out to be a file called com.apple.mediaanalysisd.plist inside the /System/Library/LaunchAgents folder.

What would happen was that after roughly 5-10 minutes of idle, the system would hang after the mediaanalysisisd process ran wild with CPU power. Developed a kernel panic and crashed. To get rid of this file (make a backup first), I had to :

    1. Boot into recovery mode (cmd+r)
    2. Once logged in through recovery (you may skip this step depending on your setup), go to Utilities -> Terminal
    3. Inside terminal type csrutil disable
    4. Restart the machine normally
    5. Open Terminal again in Applications/Utilities
    6. Type sudo mount -uw /
    7. Type your password
    8. Type sudo kill all Finder (this may or may not do something)
    9. Type cd /System/Library/Extensions
    10. Type sudo rm -rf com.apple.mediaanalysisd.plist

You may want to enter into recovery mode again and instead of typing in csrutil disable, type csrutil enable and then reboot again.

This fixed the freezing after 10 minutes as well as the system not responding to wake requests.

If you system is freezing after 10 minutes, a good troubleshooting technique is to open Activity Monitor (CPU tab) in Applications/Utilities, and just sit and watch without touching anything. Watch to see what processes jumped to the top when the freeze occurred. Those are likely to blame. Mine happened to be mediaanalysisd, but yours could be different. At least it'll give you a starting point to look into.

Success: I tried both and still had trouble. Then I noticed that while I previously had "unlock with AppleWatch" turned on, it was now turned off. I turned that back on and now it wakes from sleep. NOTE: I also purchased a new AppleWatch just before I installed Catalina. Not sure how or when the setting turned off; probably when I got the new watch. Not even sure if this was the solution, but it seems to have fixed the problem for me. I was trying a lot of things, so I can't be sure.

I'm also having this issue, I have the 2019 MBP 15 inch and it's only a few weeks old. It was working just fine before the Catalina upgrade. I've tried everything listed here multiple times. It won't wake from sleep in safe mode either. Resetting the NVRAM and SMC did nothing. HELP! I really don't want to rollback to a factory restore!

Oct 12, 2019 10:38 PM in response to wstanfill

I have the same problem (Retina Macbook Pro 2015).

The behaviour is that the device will wake successfully if it's only been idle for a few minutes so I think the problem applies to when the device goes into "hibernate" mode rather than "sleep" mode. There is a technical difference in that "hibernate" mode copies the current RAM state onto disk and shuts down more systems - I think that this is the state from which my Mac fails to wake. When it happens the device appears to wake (the screen goes from off to on and become a lighter shade of black) and makes noises when you push the keys but the screen is black and I can't see the login screen. This applies when Apple Watch login is on or off. Resetting the NVRAM etc as suggested elsewhere makes no difference.

I don't have a fix but the workaround I am using is to use a little app called "Caffeine" which prevents the Macbook from ever sleeping - it's not ideal but at least I don't have reboot every time I come back to my office.

I also suspect that there is a way to turn off Hibernate mode using the command line but I'm not sure how to do it and couldn't find suitable instructions online so perhaps someone can advise and test this solution.
