Hello, please see my post here:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250713004

Please try to reboot your MacBook into Safe Mode (holding the shift key on boot). If the Captive Portal appears it is likely a 3rd party application that is interfering with the Network Stack.

When you reload you PC back into Normal Mode you should be connected, however that doesn't necessarily mean it is fixed. This is because you have just gone through the captive portal process i.e. Accept T&Cs in Safe Mode for that day. Then after a certain period the Captive Portal may expire your session. you will need to complete the Captive Portal process again and hence it will no longer work.

So the real fix is check for applications installed that could interfere with the Network Stack such as a VPN client i.e. Cisco VPN Client or even possibly an Anti-Virus Scanner.

My reply is simple. What use to be a great company (Apple) now sucks. It's back to the Microsoft days. I have spent endless hours trying to solve this wifi issue. I see some of the suggestions and they are all ridiculous. Apple, like many don't know the meaning of regression testing. Let the consumer do it and release 25 updates. Where is Steve Jobs when you need him.

After updating to IOS Catalina I had trouble connecting to my WiFi when using my MacBook Pro. I was not having the problem with my IPhone or IPad. This AM I did a little research and I read that I should go to System/Users, click on my name and see what apps load when I turn on my MacBook Pro. I did and I saw that Netgear - which was the modem/router that I was using before my building switched over to community WiFi - was listed there. I had been given a new modem/router by our cable provider, so I deleted Netgear in the start up menu, and my problem appears to be solved.

it appears it’s worth checking to see which Apps load when you turn on your computer, one of the Apps may be causing the WiFi problem

I am also having this issue, but only with one of my laptops. I have a Mid 2015 MacBook Pro that I upgraded to Catalina and it is working 100% fine.

I also have a newer 2018 MacBook Pro which is the one having all the issues. I have tried creating a new network location, no luck. I have tried rebooting in safe mode, also no luck. I have no 3rd party antivirus, VPN, or firewall applications on this machine. I have tried removing and re-adding my wifi network, no luck. I am at a dead end.

I am left wondering if it might be a hardware issue. My old macbook is great with Catalina, my new one, not so much.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Thanks!

Brian

I was getting this problem and tried many of the solutions, and I would lose connectivity (wifi connected, no internet) on MANY networks. SO I removed ANY VPN etc etc. And it continued so I did the "New Location" thing and it worked, until IT DIDN'T. Even new locations I created in the past also died.

SO I just went into the "bad connections" removed the WIFI connection in NETWORK SETTINGS and re-added it and it worked just fine EVERY SINGLE TIME. Now, how long will it last? WHO KNOWS? HEY APPLE! Can ya fix this?

I’m having this issue too. It always occurs after I do an update for OS X. Once the computer restarts, BAM. No more internet. Oh sure I can access the WiFi network, but that’s it. I’ve been on the phone with senior techs about this for probably 11+ hours within the past 4 months. Eventually what did it was I would restart the computer into Safe Mode, verify that now, yes, the internet is working, then restart again into a normal operating mode. Problem is, this doesn’t even work anymore. This is after the most recent OS X update on February 5th or 6th, 2020.

FYI one other option that worked was I restored from a Time Machine backup to a point in the OS before the update. This is NOT a solution however if you ask me, and that’s a pain in the butt process to begin with.

Keep in mind if I go into Recovery Mode, (hold CMD-R when you first see the Apple logo), I can access the internet by going to the “Get help online” option and just typing in Google or whatever. So something is working. I have gone through all the aforementioned steps to no avail in this thread.

I’ll update if I find another solution. Computer restart counter just for the fun of it: 7 restarts so far today.

Apple’s solution was for me to ultimately bring my computer to an Apple certified repair shop. I didn’t have the time to do this so I completely erased my iMac in recovery mode & started from scratch, reinstalling everything all over...not from backup. Whole process took about 6 hours. We will see if this works when Apple pushes out the next OS update.
