manually adding music to iPhone

I recently installed OS Catalina, and I'm having issues transferring music from the music app to my iPhone. I selected manually manage music, movies, and TV shows. The questions I have are: Do I transfer the music through finder

or do I manage my music through the music app. Basically right click the tracks and add device?

I have the same issue, and cannot work out how to transfer just the music I want onto my iPhone, not my entire library. I do not use the streaming service, neither have I any intention to do so, and want to transfer my iPhone to the music I want on MY iPhone. At the moment, it's not clear how this is done. I can't imagine Apple wouldn't allow this!

I have found that the most efficient way to load/unload music is to sync the music you want on your phone from Finder, after selecting the 'sync selected artists, albums, genre...' option, but beware that it will delete all the music you currently have on your phone. Once you've bitten the bullet, as I did last week, loading/removing music is kinda manageable. It's nowhere near as easy, simple or straightforward as it was with iTunes, but it kinda works, and at least, if you updates some info on your Mac, it then gets updated on your phone too, so there are *some* advantages.

So how does it work?

Once you've selected 'sync selected artists, albums, genre...' and cleared your iPhone:

  1. Go to Finder
  2. Make sure you've clicked on your phone on the left hand navigation
  3. Select the music tab
  4. Just tick the artists, albums or other things you want to sync
  5. Click on the Sync button at the bottom of the window... et voila!

It is a bit cumbersome when you have an extensive music library and don't necessarily want everything from an artist on your phone as you'll have to sync individual albums or songs, but it's the easiest way I have found to manage my music.

It seems that, now, PC users have a much better way to manage their music with good ol' iTunes than Mac have with Music... Quite an interesting move from Apple really...

A little bit tricky. Here is my findings.

Assuming that you have all your song files imported into the Music Library and your iPhone is connecting to your Mac.

Step 1) On your Mac goto the Music app then click at the iPhone icon in the side bar. This will open the list of song currently in your iPhone. The list area will be use in Step 3.

Step 2) Goto Finder, locate the song file(s) that you want to transfer to the iPhone. Usually they are stored in ~/Music/Media/Music/....

Step 3) Drag the required song file to the “list of song” area in Step 1. The song file will be transfer to your iPhone. If you drag multiple files then it will take some time to finish the process. You may observe that on the right hand side of the iPhone icon there will be a round dot appear during the transfer. Wait until the dot disappear.

I really do not understand why Apple programmer put it this way. It does not make sense and a bit complicate. You can accidentally move the song file to somewhere.

You can use the same procedure to transfer ringtones.

Goodluck

Glad to hear that you can manage to transfer music to your phone. The issue that your iphone cannot be found is a saparate case. Since both Catalina and iOS are new there is possibility that some glitch may occur to specific model of iPhone. Try reconnect your iPhone to your iMac using different cable or restore your iPhone. I hope this may help.

Supong, I've tried reconnecting using a different cable, but it doesn't work. I dont want to restore my iPhone again because it took me a very long time to get my iPhone restored. Is there anyway to get it sync and manage to transfer my music from my iMac to my iPhone. I'll contact apple support again and hopefully they will have a solution. Or I'll wait for an update either from Mac OS or iOS 13.
