Catalina support for Canon 32-bit printer drivers

Apple seems to have been including Canon printer drivers scanner support through macOS10.14.6 Mojave. Will macOS10.15 Catalina continue support Canon printer/scanners with the 32-bit print drivers? If not, does anyone know a work around? My printer is a Canon Pixma TS6220 and was purchased less than 6 months ago.

Just spoke to Canon who said that Apple has been taking care of Canon printer drivers themselves and suggests that Apple is responsible for creating the 64-bit support for Canon products and including it in mac OS10.15 Catalina. I am hoping to hear from someone who has upgraded to Catalina and successfully printed with a Pixma TS6220. Printing capability is an essential part of my operation and will not upgrade to Catalina until I get verification.

I just updated a Mac with Catalina and updated the drivers for Canon MX925. Just visit the driver support site of Canon and download the latest drivers (for Mojave). Even the IJ Scan Utility (v19.1.0h) is updated and works fine with Catalina.

That's not the way it worked.

The manufacturer supplied Apple with drivers for their printers. Apple bundled it with the OS, or recently, made it available as a download (automagically). Apple never wrote the driver themselves. How could they? They'd need proprietary information from the vendor, and it would be a huge waste of manpower.

The current state of affairs is "driverless" devices which are designed to work with built-in interfaces of the OS, like AirPrint and Image Capture (ICA). In this case, Apple does write the "driver."

I just talked to an Apple Tech Support individual. I was told it was the printer manufacturer's responsibility to build the drivers. I also spent 3 hours on the phone with Konica Minolta who was clueless as to why the printer driver was not available for my printer. From what I read only HP printers (select few) were not having issues. Brother, Konica-Minolta and Canon are all still out in the cold for the most part. I have to restore to Mojave to get mine back to print.

From Canon support:

"Currently, there are no updated drivers and software for CanoScan LiDE 220 for macOS 10.15 Catalina. However, you may try downloading and installing the driver for MAC 10.14 (Mojave) although there's no guarantee that this programme will work as it is only designed for MAC 10.14 and earlier.

On the other hand, new versions of the drivers and software for cameras, printers and scanners will be rolled out soon although we do not have an ETA for this. I'd recommend visiting the product download site from time to time to see if updates are uploaded and released

I think that I jumped to conclusion that Canon was saying that Apple provided specific product model support by default, rather than generic Canon IJS scanner, and Epson Fax support which is present. No PPD printer files are pre-installed for either vendor, so model specific printer features would not be supported beyond Apple's generic print driver. This is regarding Mojave 10.14.6 (18G103).

In the generic Canon bundles, the compiled binaries appear to be dual architecture: i386 (32-bit) and X86_64, which would fly on Mojave for basic device support. It would not be unexpected that Apple would cleanse these to be strictly 64-bit on Catalina, as the 32-bit code would otherwise be useless.

I upgraded to Catalina a couple of days ago and have a Canon TS5050 for Printing, Scanning & Copying. Printing & Copying fine as before but could not Scan (driver error message). Upgraded to Air Print as recommended when printing today. Have just been able to Scan via System Preferences / Printer and Scanners - selected the Scan tab for my device, Open Scanner and just followed the on screen instructions for scanning. Worked first time.

Using the scientific method of logic would tell us that the most up to date driver available from Canon would not work because it is appears to be strictly 32- bit, however inexplicably it is working for some. I suggest somewhere there have been some accommodations. I hope that others and particularly people with the large graphic printers also take note that there are software and firmware updates available at the same site I referred sitetech to https://www.canon-europe.com/support/products/imageprograf/imageprograf-ipf760.html?type=drivers&language=en&os=macos%2010.14%20(mojave). I know if I needed to print something today and had no available solution I would try these downloads and updates knowing that they will not cause harm.
