Catalina support for Canon 32-bit printer drivers

Apple seems to have been including Canon printer drivers scanner support through macOS10.14.6 Mojave. Will macOS10.15 Catalina continue support Canon printer/scanners with the 32-bit print drivers? If not, does anyone know a work around? My printer is a Canon Pixma TS6220 and was purchased less than 6 months ago.

There's a difference between drivers and other peripheral software. Drivers for printers are written by Apple, have been for a very long time. Apple's specification has made it so compatible printers are made to talk with Macs directly without the need of external drivers.

The specific Canon software like the scanner software or image editing application it may come with are not made by Apple. Its up to Canon to update those.

The printer will still work on Catalina normally , but the included Canon 32 bit software will not.

You can use Apple's own Image Capture or Preview to scan documents if the Canon software is not updated.

Just spoke to Canon who said that Apple has been taking care of Canon printer drivers themselves and suggests that Apple is responsible for creating the 64-bit support for Canon products and including it in mac OS10.15 Catalina.

That's not the way it worked.

The manufacturer supplied Apple with drivers for their printers. Apple bundled it with the OS, or recently, made it available as a download (automagically). Apple never wrote the driver themselves. How could they? They'd need proprietary information from the vendor, and it would be a huge waste of manpower.

The current state of affairs is "driverless" devices which are designed to work with built-in interfaces of the OS, like AirPrint and Image Capture (ICA). In this case, Apple does write the "driver."

After speaking with Canon technical support today I was given the vague answer that many af the 32-bits apps will be available as 64-bit apps in a couple of weeks. The vague response included the caveat that the older products' support apps would not be upgraded to 64-bit. The criteria used or specific models included to determine which products will get 64-bit upgrades was not available. I have decided not to install Catalina until these issues as well as issues concerning Canon camera support apps have been settled.

I just talked to an Apple Tech Support individual. I was told it was the printer manufacturer's responsibility to build the drivers. I also spent 3 hours on the phone with Konica Minolta who was clueless as to why the printer driver was not available for my printer. From what I read only HP printers (select few) were not having issues. Brother, Konica-Minolta and Canon are all still out in the cold for the most part. I have to restore to Mojave to get mine back to print.

to scan I put my printer to Scan and then I downloaded VueScan which is free, then when you click on it and it activates you just click Ok which takes the pop up screen down, then hit Scan, and any adjustments you want and when it's done scanning, it will ask you to save it. I click No and then I do a screen shot or whatever it's called when you hold the Command/Shift and 4 down and the curser shows up and you hold and move it to the exact thing you want to screen shot, which will then be saved to my desktop and then I can attach it to emails, or print it, etc.
