Wifi interface completely gone after catalina update on 2015 MBP

After upgrading my early 2015 MBP from mojave to catalina, the wifi interface disappeared from the system.

I don't see it anymore in the list and can't add it. Even in recovery mode, network utility doesn't show it in the drop down.

System information says

  Software Versions:
  CoreWLAN: 13.0 (null)
  CoreWLANKit: 13.0 (null)
  Menu Extra: 13.0 (null)
  System Information: 12.0 (null

This person on stackexchange has the same problem https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/372025/missing-wifi-interface-after-upgrade-to-catalina?newreg=1904677ef3d840f0a87b73a2cd7bd342

Is this a known problem that's going to be fixed? I don't want to downgrade to mojave, restore backups and everything and then reupgrade again...

Hey there! I see lots of clever workarounds here. I’m surprised to see only a few mentions of creating a new network location:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202480

This would typically reset the interfaces to defaults, which may be the fix with least resistance, (Although may not be the case for some, worth a try):

Locations > Edit Locations > “+” > Gove a location name > Done > Apply, test.

Id say if that doesn’t work, you’ve already tried a Reinstall of the OS, and you have your data properly backed up:

Open Finder > Go (Too Menu) > Computer > Macintosh HD (Usually) > Library > Preferences:

Scroll to the bottom and drag the folder “System Configuration” to the Desktop for a copy if you need to.

Then open the original System Configuration folder:

Delete:

NetworkInterfaces.plist

Com.apple.airport.plist

Preferences.plist

(And if there):

Preferences.plist (old).

Restart your Mac and test. Hope that helps!

19June2020 and this worked on a iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015)

I actually replaced the original wifi card with another one because my bluetooth was not working, and then I had an issue with the wifi disappearing upon the new software, but bluetooth worked fine.

(Minor, possibly major, detail: also had upgraded my HD and freshly installed the latest MacOS).

Thank you so much, you are a saint for posting this jog@mac.com

- I followed verbatim and boom, WiFi back up in business like new :)
