Wifi interface completely gone after catalina update on 2015 MBP

After upgrading my early 2015 MBP from mojave to catalina, the wifi interface disappeared from the system.

I don't see it anymore in the list and can't add it. Even in recovery mode, network utility doesn't show it in the drop down.

System information says

  Software Versions:
  CoreWLAN: 13.0 (null)
  CoreWLANKit: 13.0 (null)
  Menu Extra: 13.0 (null)
  System Information: 12.0 (null
  IO80211 Family: 12.0 (null)
  Diagnostics: 1.0 (null)
  AirPort Utility:

This person on stackexchange has the same problem https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/372025/missing-wifi-interface-after-upgrade-to-catalina?newreg=1904677ef3d840f0a87b73a2cd7bd342

Is this a known problem that's going to be fixed? I don't want to downgrade to mojave, restore backups and everything and then reupgrade again...

This is what worked for me on a mid-2014 MBP:

  1. Download the modified wifi drivers (credit to Alex here) and unzip > you get a folder named WiFi_kexts
  2. Boot into Recovery Mode: restart your computer while pressing and holding cmd-R
  3. Open > Utilities > Terminal via Menu Bar
  4. Type csrutil disable and hit return
  5. Type reboot and hit return > computer reboots normally
  6. Open > Utilities > Terminal and enter  cd  and hit the space bar (don't hit return)
  7. Drag the folder WiFi_kexts onto the Terminal window and hit return
  8. In Terminal, enter  sudo mount -uw /  and hit return, then enter your user password and hit return
  9. Enter  sudo cp -r IO80211Family.kext /System/Library/Extensions/  and hit return
  10. Enter  sudo cp -r IO80211FamilyV2.kext /System/Library/Extensions/  and hit return
  11. Right-click on Kext Utility in the folder WiFi_kexts and choose open, click open in the following dialog, authenticate with your password
  12. Wait for Kext Utility to complete – this took maybe two minutes on my setup, and I got an error message in the end, as well as "All done"
  13. Reboot your computer normally and enjoy WiFi in Catalina
  14. If you want to turn on SIP again you can boot into recovery mode again and enter csrutil enable (hit return) reboot (hit return)

Hello,

I used this method 4 weeks ago and worked! https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250720965?answerId=251753760022#251753760022

Now, yesterday another Catalina update happened and my WiFi gone again. I tried same solution, but this time didn't worked. I tried three times and still no WiFi. I even tried Catalina Combo 10.15.5 and nothing.

WiFi details from System Report:

Software Versions:

CoreWLAN: 13.0 ((null))

CoreWLANKit: 13.0 ((null))

Menu Extra: 13.0 ((null))

System Information: 12.0 (1500)

IO80211 Family: 12.0 (1200.12.2b1)

Diagnostics: 1.0 (910)

Hey there! I see lots of clever workarounds here. I’m surprised to see only a few mentions of creating a new network location:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202480

This would typically reset the interfaces to defaults, which may be the fix with least resistance, (Although may not be the case for some, worth a try):

Locations > Edit Locations > “+” > Gove a location name > Done > Apply, test.

Id say if that doesn’t work, you’ve already tried a Reinstall of the OS, and you have your data properly backed up:

Open Finder > Go (Too Menu) > Computer > Macintosh HD (Usually) > Library > Preferences:

Scroll to the bottom and drag the folder “System Configuration” to the Desktop for a copy if you need to.

Then open the original System Configuration folder:

Delete:

NetworkInterfaces.plist

Com.apple.airport.plist

Preferences.plist

(And if there):

Preferences.plist (old).

Restart your Mac and test. Hope that helps!

Hi nahiable!

I made a post earlier about this. I don’t think that disabling System Integrity Protection to begin with is a smart workaround, please try these two, simple steps, see if either one helps!:

Happened last night after changing out my speakers.

Lost wifi/bluetooth and had this error:

Software Versions:

CoreWLAN: 13.0 (null)

CoreWLANKit: 13.0 (null)

Menu Extra: 13.0 (null)

System Information: 12.0 (null

IO80211 Family: 12.0 (null)

Diagnostics: 1.0 (null)

AirPort Utility:

What saved me in this panic moment?

Apparently, one of the components became lifted/detached when removing the speaker connector. I don't know what part of the A1425 is marked with the star, but it has ribbon bands attached to it. Clicked it into place and resolved this situation.

Press down gently on all the components within and ensure securely connected.

Good luck!

I’m having the same issues as OP after updating my 2016 MBP to Catalina. WiFi connects and disconnects every 30 seconds and something is wrong with the WiFi software saying null for everything. It’s definitely an update problem that should be looked into. Hacking into WiFi files and installing some unknown source files to get this to work is not an acceptable solution. Reformatting and reinstalling everything is also sledgehammer approach. If I could sudo apt-get something to fix this, I’ll be happy.

Hello Jog, I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro, mid 2012. When I upgraded to Catalina 10.15.3 I lost the wifi, went back to Mojave and continued without the wifi and went back to Catalina again.

Today I did the Wifi_kexts procedure and it didn't work, I repeated the procedure and it didn't work, so I upgraded to Combo update 10.15.3, continued without wifi, redid the procedure and it didn't work. I went back to Mojave and did the procedure and still have no wifi. Help please.
