mail slow to update in iOS 13

I have a brand new iPhone 11 Pro. It is updated to the latest iOS 13 update. I will get notifications and badges for mail saying that I have new mail but when I go into the mail app there is nothing there. It can take 5-8 seconds for the new mail to show up or I have to manually refresh it to get the new mail to show up.

This only started happening after updating to iOS 13 which I did on an iPhone Xs before updating to the 11 Pro and it was doing the same thing on the Xs.

This is really annoying and a time suck. If I see I have new mail, I want to read it right away not wait for it to download. If I get the notification, it should have downloaded in the background first. This is 2019 after all.

OK so right after I posted my last post it started to act up after I clicked on the bottom left icon to view unread messages only. After that m, email acted up and started to freeze. After talking to AppleCare on the phone for about an hour trying to troubleshoot they had me delete my accounts again, turn off iCloud mail, then delete the Mail application on my phone, and lastly resetting the phone by turning it off. I waited a few seconds turned the phone back on, reinstalled the Mail application, turned iCloud back on, and re-added my Gmail account. All seems to be working very smoothly at the moment. Sounds like alot but not so bad when you do it one step at a time.

Hi. Can recommend you a few:

  1. Spark (https://apps.apple.com/app/id997102246);
  2. Gmail (https://apps.apple.com/app/id422689480);
  3. Outlook (https://apps.apple.com/app/id951937596).

These are the best I know. You can add any mailboxes to these clients (not just @gmail.com in Gmail, for example) and each of them have some special features (Spark has the most). Check them out, I'm pretty sure you'd live them :)

I have the same issue after updating to IOS 13 (it is now version 13.3). A new message content is blank and it stays like that for the whole day unless I hard reset the iPhone (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button + Volume Down button in iPhone 7). After the restarting and opening Mail, messages will be updated. Such a annoying bug remaining after three updates is unacceptable.

Ok, so I got in touch with Apple a few times and eventually a senior support advisor who was very helpful escalated it the engineer last week and called me back yesterday with an update. Apple have now accepted it is a software fault as they have received numerous complaints but have said they have no ETA on a software patch. Basically, I think they are trying to tell us that we just have to wait for iOS 14 for it to be fixed. What a poor show on Apple's behalf to have let such an annoying bug to be present for almost 1 year.

Whats bizarre is that a lot of people I'm assuming don't have this problem. The senior advisor told me that he has an iPhone and iPad Pro and none of these problems I mention are present on his devices. He even played back my screen recording and said he definitely doesn't have that problem.

Oh well...

After having this problem for over a year I think I have solved it and I can't believe I didn't just try this before. Basically, just remove the Mail app from the phone, so delete it totally. Reboot your iPhone. Reinstall the Mail app from the App Store. Open the Mail app and login with one of your accounts, then switch on the 'mail' toggle for all your accounts which will still be in your settings and turn on notifications / banners etc again. Thanks, hope this works for you also :)

Like many other users of iOS 13 (in all released versions up to .3), the email App has become slow and balky. All settings adjustments, reloads, restarts etc have not fixed it.

Fire alerts and power shutdowns in Sonoma County are a big deal right now and my iPhone email notification has been rendered useless by this unfortunate Apple iOS13 update - I get an email tone and preview but I can’t actually read the email for 20 minutes or more.

Problem was worse for me in 13.1.x, 13.2 now seems to update the counter on the app immediately, but like others have posted, mail is only fetched when the app is open or for a short period after. Background last 24 hours 3m, last 10 days 35mins.

Really disappointing as this was an application (apart from the conversation issue they had early on) that has worked reliably. Like many of us this is now our personal and work phone and Apple do need to get this sorted, which I'm sure they will as they are aware of the issue.
