mail slow to update in iOS 13

I have a brand new iPhone 11 Pro. It is updated to the latest iOS 13 update. I will get notifications and badges for mail saying that I have new mail but when I go into the mail app there is nothing there. It can take 5-8 seconds for the new mail to show up or I have to manually refresh it to get the new mail to show up.

This only started happening after updating to iOS 13 which I did on an iPhone Xs before updating to the 11 Pro and it was doing the same thing on the Xs.

This is really annoying and a time suck. If I see I have new mail, I want to read it right away not wait for it to download. If I get the notification, it should have downloaded in the background first. This is 2019 after all.

OK so right after I posted my last post it started to act up after I clicked on the bottom left icon to view unread messages only. After that m, email acted up and started to freeze. After talking to AppleCare on the phone for about an hour trying to troubleshoot they had me delete my accounts again, turn off iCloud mail, then delete the Mail application on my phone, and lastly resetting the phone by turning it off. I waited a few seconds turned the phone back on, reinstalled the Mail application, turned iCloud back on, and re-added my Gmail account. All seems to be working very smoothly at the moment. Sounds like alot but not so bad when you do it one step at a time.

I also updated to iOS 13.3 in the hope of a solution (based on Apple's optimistic release notes), but the problems persist on my iPhone X. As conrad234 mentions above, I have to exit from the "inbox", open the "sent" box (or another one), and then reopen the "inbox" in order to get my incoming emails ... very cumbersome and time-consuming.

You are right. The problem appeared on most email clients.

when I enabled Signal Messenger’s access to contact data on ios13.0 it started on my phone. Signal was useless. It got killed by the os. As soon as I deleted all contacts ( 5000 with 100 groups) Mail started to behave normally again. So I reduced the groups and deleted all local contacts. When I resynced contacts fron iCloud thinges turned towards normal for me.

I have an open engineering ticket for the last three weeks. They know it’s messed up but have no fix for it yet.

13.3.2 was supposed to fix it, but failed in spectacular fashion.

at least they haven’t tried the ol’ reset your phone to plain and start over thing and admitted it’s at the OS level. I think mainly because I sent them diagnostics from two iPads and an iPhone all exhibiting the same behavior 😖

It seems to have a connection to syncing contacts. After disconnecting from icloud mail worked again. then, after contacts were synced again, the mail app slowed down again, rendering the iphone useless for mail.

Even third party mail apps like Gmail stop working after they ask for permission to read accounts. I have 5000 accounts and had never a problem on ios 12,11,10,9..

My current workaround is to use gmail iOS app to instantly retrieve emails. I, too, get the message header only (via iOS mail app) and blank content with spinning wheeliething. Also have intermittent probs with (unrelated other than iOS 13.x) voicemail (“mailbox full” when not & Verizon has had many complaints...apparently relayed to new iOS and network syncing issues).

looking forward to resolution, like so many users

It takes 20-40 seconds to update any Exchange folder (Input, Sent,...) on my iPad 5th generation with iOS 13.3 It seems that every time the folders are „created“ again : Checking For Mail / Updated Just Now / waiting 20-40 seconds until Mails shown - this is independent from the Wi-Fi connection/speed. Obvious bug, all was fine with iOS 12.x

Very annoying :-(
