mail slow to update in iOS 13

I have a brand new iPhone 11 Pro. It is updated to the latest iOS 13 update. I will get notifications and badges for mail saying that I have new mail but when I go into the mail app there is nothing there. It can take 5-8 seconds for the new mail to show up or I have to manually refresh it to get the new mail to show up.

This only started happening after updating to iOS 13 which I did on an iPhone Xs before updating to the 11 Pro and it was doing the same thing on the Xs.

This is really annoying and a time suck. If I see I have new mail, I want to read it right away not wait for it to download. If I get the notification, it should have downloaded in the background first. This is 2019 after all.

OK so right after I posted my last post it started to act up after I clicked on the bottom left icon to view unread messages only. After that m, email acted up and started to freeze. After talking to AppleCare on the phone for about an hour trying to troubleshoot they had me delete my accounts again, turn off iCloud mail, then delete the Mail application on my phone, and lastly resetting the phone by turning it off. I waited a few seconds turned the phone back on, reinstalled the Mail application, turned iCloud back on, and re-added my Gmail account. All seems to be working very smoothly at the moment. Sounds like alot but not so bad when you do it one step at a time.

Having this issue as well on two Iphone 6s's with 3 gmail accounts on them. IOS 13.3.1

Mail use to work great. I use to have 4-5 accounts added all the way back from an Iphone 4s and it never had issues. Now on IOS 13 on my 6s it just sits blank for a very long time. Last night I was in a low service area (typical for T-Mobile) and mail sat there blank until I had service. I am wondering if this is using more data on my plan. It's like its having to re-download all mail every time I launch the Mail app. I've turned off Siri search but that did not help. I thought maybe it had something to do with dark mode but after going back to light mode it has not improved. I'll have to look back on the several pages on here but I just wanted to report that its still an issue with 13.3.1.

+1. I'm on a 7+ and all these same issues started as soon as I updated to 13.X. On 13.3 now, still all the same issues.

I get a new mail notification on my PC, nothing shows up on the phone. I get a new mail notification on the phone, there's no new emails in the app, but opening the app triggers a sync and it eventually downloads them. Exchange emails used to be basically real time. I read an email, it still shows up as unread in the app. I click the icon to show unread only, it leaves the last 10-15 emails showing - even the ones I read three days ago.

And it's not just Mail. I also sync Notes and Reminders from my Exchange accounts into the iOS apps. Notes without failure will just show a blank screen other than the navigation bar at the very top, so I have to force reboot the app to see/edit my notes. Reminders, I'll mark something complete and it'll just stay there even after I collapse and reopen the list.

It seems that only a few users are affected by this issue that I also have, but three of my friends don't. I have not seen this issue addressed by magazines such as Macworld either. Could it be that Apple does not want to spend any time and energy resolving an issue they do not consider important enough? Could it be that this problem affects only those who have a certain program or type of program installed that causes Mail to malfunction...

Note that in my case, Mail has additional bad behavior, such as emails suddenly disappearing from the Inbox and only comming back an hour or two latter.

It seems the only short term solution is to use another mail application, but which one?

Wonder if iOS 13 security flaws (mail) have anything to do with this.

Not planning to abandon Apple iOS, but likely to use other mail apps.

Bummer.

I have noticed this problem doesn’t seem to happen when I’m actually using my device, only when it’s locked. With the device locked, new email notifications are pushed as expected but the inbox is slow to load the new mail when I go to check it later. I turned passcode lock off for a while just to see what happens and the inbox loads almost instantly. Not a secure solution though. Problem right throughout with iOS 13.

I understand you! I was in you shoes before! I basically restarted the phone from 0 and that worked for me, but I am not going to do this the rest of my life everytime a new phone comes out because it is ridiculous. Look how they force early versions to buy new phones because the older versions we're not going to work. I have a patient that has her first generation still working but she never downloads the updates and the phone works great. Which we think the opposite without the appearing it won’t work well 🤦‍♂️lol

I’m glad they’re finally acknowledging all the complaints. Although I find that the speed is a bit better in 14 (5–10 seconds for download of “pushed” mail), it’s a still a big regression from iOS 12. They’ve also acknowledged my feedback on the issue, saying that the problem has been reported more than ten times (I’m guessing a lot more). However, like you said, there’s no ETA; the resolution remains open.

Part of me thinks Apple intentionally slowed down mail retrieval to save battery life. Or who knows... the app shows no consistency whatsoever. If so, how they thought this would be acceptable for any user is beyond me. Too many cooks in the kitchen for them to make logical decisions about software, I suppose.

Anyway, it shouldn’t have taken over a year for Apple to acknowledge this problem, let alone try to fix it. I feel like I’m dealing with Microsoft in the late 90s.
