mail slow to update in iOS 13

I have a brand new iPhone 11 Pro. It is updated to the latest iOS 13 update. I will get notifications and badges for mail saying that I have new mail but when I go into the mail app there is nothing there. It can take 5-8 seconds for the new mail to show up or I have to manually refresh it to get the new mail to show up.

This only started happening after updating to iOS 13 which I did on an iPhone Xs before updating to the 11 Pro and it was doing the same thing on the Xs.

This is really annoying and a time suck. If I see I have new mail, I want to read it right away not wait for it to download. If I get the notification, it should have downloaded in the background first. This is 2019 after all.

OK so right after I posted my last post it started to act up after I clicked on the bottom left icon to view unread messages only. After that m, email acted up and started to freeze. After talking to AppleCare on the phone for about an hour trying to troubleshoot they had me delete my accounts again, turn off iCloud mail, then delete the Mail application on my phone, and lastly resetting the phone by turning it off. I waited a few seconds turned the phone back on, reinstalled the Mail application, turned iCloud back on, and re-added my Gmail account. All seems to be working very smoothly at the moment. Sounds like alot but not so bad when you do it one step at a time.

@88

a few questions if you don’t mind since I’m contemplating what you’ve done.

  1. can Apple mail and outlook coexist while both receiving iCloud mail
  2. were you using iCloud mail or something else like gmail
  3. if you left both Apple mail and outlook signed in did they both push to your phone or did you have to set one to fetch
  4. finally, I assume you created an app specific password when you signed outlook into your iCloud account.

#1) Yes, they can co exist. I actually had 3 mail apps going at once. Yahoo, Apple and Outlook.

a) Yahoo, although works perfectly, kept pushing ad after ad into my mailbox. As soon as I'd get rid of one (after a menu to select "why" I'm getting rid of it, then tapping "Done") another ad would take it's place. You have to pay $3.50/mo to lose the ads. Isn't that awesome ?

b) Apple - I bought a new 7th Gen iPad to replace my old iPad with iOS 9.5.3. Apple Mail works perfect ! in the old iPad...argh...

c) Outlook - takes a bit of setting up (swiping left does this, swiping right does that) but works fine. Does not automatically display your last email...you have to tap it...every dang time. Does not seem to automatically "Mark As Read" emails that you've just read (at least I haven't figured out how to set that up), so, that's one of the things that I set-up...swiping right "Marks As Read."

#2) No

#3) Yes, they all Push to the various Mail apps. Both Apple and Yahoo display new emails with a "Number" Outlook does not display anything. But, I have Notifications turned off for all of them and yet each one displays new emails differently.

#4) No, I did not set-up an app specific password. Not sure if that would work.

But, it's no problem to give them all a go. They all work independently.

hey...thanks for the detailed response.

one clarifying question...did you mean that you had iCloud mail pushing to both Apple’s Mail app and the Outlook app and they both worked simultaneously (well obviously Apple’s App is messed up but that aside, it didn’t work any worse for setting up the same account in Outlook?)

now, to your point about not using an app specific password for Outlook to access your iCloud mail...I’m assuming you are not using two factor identification...because the app should not function with 2FA enabled and just the normal p/w.

thanks again...

Admitted bias against MS Outlook (having been forced to use / wrangle it for several years...& after attempting to help frustrated Outlook users who were tearing hair out).

Did check out App Store reviews of iOS v’n...filtering search by “most recent” unfortunately only made me want to stick another pin in Outlook voodoo doll. 👀

In fairness, no email clients appear to be safe from the antics of iOS 13.x.

Here’s to a stable version of 13. Soon.

How did you get Outlook to work? My Outlook has not worked since the update. It won't update AT ALL. It hasn't updated a message since 11/21/19. Gmail downloads to my phone but my IMAP doesn't work at all. Even if I read messages with the Gmail app on my phone, when I go to my Laptop and go to Gmail, all the messages are still there that I deleted and Read on my iphone.

An additional issue is now surfacing. Messages that I transfer from my "Sent" box to a different Mailbox temporarily lose their content in the process. It takes about 10 minutes for the content to reappear. This would likely be closely related to the existing problem. I keep hoping tha Apple will correct all of this soon. It is somewhat surprising that no one from Apple has even made a comment so far.

Just want to add here. I recently updated a very old phone (embarrassed to say) to iOS 13.3 and this problem started for me. Every time I open the OS mail app it is like the inboxes are rebuilding. It used to be slow to update the inbox by “checking mail” but now it is more sluggish. It is annoying and if doesn’t improve I may just move to a third party mail app like using my Gmail app. I have no solution to offer.
