Keyboard and touchpad lost after sleep

Occasionally, not always, after the Catalina upgrade, whenever my macbook sleeps, I lose the keyboard and the touchpad.

I must use my fingerprint to log in and once I do, I have no touchpad nor keyboard. I need to reboot everytime this happens.

Ok, I can confirm that 10.15.5 released today does not fix this issue.

For all the troubled souls like myself in this forum and beyond, here is a temporary workaround I figured out yesterday to get this gremlin out of your sight, until Apple officially fixes this.

Since the bug only occurs when Wi-Fi is on, we can create a process that automatically turns off Wi-Fi upon sleeping and turns it back on from waking up.

  • Install Homebrew

Copy this line to Terminal and hit Enter.

/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install.sh)"

  • Enter
brew install sleepwatcher

to install Sleepwatcher.

  • Enter the following code to create two files . sleep and .wakeup in the home directory ~/
touch ~/.sleep && chmod 700 ~/.sleep
touch ~/.wakeup && chmod 700 ~/.wakeup

  • Go to ~/ and edit .sleep and .wakeup with a code editor of your choice, I used Xcode. These would dictate how Sleepwatcher would perform.

For .sleep

#!/bin/bash
networksetup setairportpower en0 off

For .wakeup

#!/bin/bash
networksetup setairportpower en0 on

  • Finally, enter the following code in Terminal that would configure launchd to run Sleepwatcher at startup or login
cp /usr/local/Cellar/sleepwatcher/2.2.1/*.plist ~/Library/LaunchAgents
launchctl load ~/Library/LaunchAgents/de.bernhard-baehr.sleepwatcher-20compatibility-localuser.plist

Now everything is set, go on and close the lid, wait awhile and reopen it, notice the Wi-Fi icon is off and quickly turns back on.

Although this is not the most elegant solution, it eases me from the paranoia that makes my blood frozen every time I suspect to see a yet again frozen computer. A moment of idea and inspiration just can't wait an extra 15 seconds.

I'm not an expert in these, if anyone would spot a mistake or suggest a better solution please post here, thank you.

When mine goes to sleep, nothing works. The screen is black, the keyboard doesn't work, the mouse doesn't work, shutting the lid and opening it again doesn't work, none of the icons work...Well, you get it. I literally have to do a hard reboot to use it again. I've had it one week, and it's super annoying. If I close all my running programs whenever I get up, like to answer the door, it continues to work.

mine does that as well, but it is not a Catalina upgrade, it is a NEW 16" MBP running Catalina (of course). I notice that if you wait for a long time (varies) it will finally connects to the KB/M but not after posting a "no bluetooth keyboard found" warning pop-up.

on a side note, it is very frustrating that I cannot boot my new MBP with my slightly older OS. it certainly is worth mentioning that Apple could fix this easily.

Has anyone else noticed a difference between staying in "clamshell" (i.e. desktop mode) versus traditional laptop mode? I have mine hooked up to external monitors with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. The Thunderbolt Display I'm using has an ethernet port, so I'm not using Wifi for network access. I have never had a delay waking from sleep that way; only when I'm detached and open the clamshell. I don't understand why that would be unless it's 100% an issue with the Wifi. I'm going to use my Wifi instead of ethernet in this mode for a few days and see what results I get, but curious if others have any insight. Thanks.

But another thing worth pointing is that this problem doesn’t happen with all WiFi networks. At least in my case. I guess there is some bug that in some cases, with some networks makes the keyboard not responding. I don’t know if it’s related to router or internet provider. I have changed my ASUS router lately to DECO mesh and still have this problem. I didn’t have it with some WiFis in one supermarket.

I have started having this issue today for the first time on my MBP 2018 running Catalina 10.15.5. Bluetooth is OFF, no external accessories connected.

Did not experience it before applying latest updates. It's driving me crazy!

The positive thing is that after the Bluetooth dialog related to missing keyboard appears and disappears, the built-in trackpad and keyboard restart functioning. Strange as ****.

He's a weird thing I've noticed too; I have an external bluetooth keyboard, and that works more quickly when the problem occurs, sometimes my primary keyboard doesn't come back on at all. I just moved location, and now I have a bad wifi signal here, and I experience this more frequently. The weird thing was that I noticed on my 13" MBP, the Touch Bar is working fine; but the main keyboard and touchpad do not.
