Mac OS Catalina Sidecar error 32002

I have a MacBook Pro 2016 model and an iPad Pro 11 inch 2018 model with Mac OS Catalina (10.15) and iOS 13.1.2 installed. Both devices are signed in using the same Apple ID and 2-factor authentication is turned on. Both devices are on the same wireless network.

If I use the sidecar option from the settings menu or if I use the displayy option from the menu bar my iPad is listed as an option for usage of sidecar. But when I select it I get an 'Unable to connect' message with an error code of 32002. See attached screenshot.

I tried restarting the devices, connecting them using the USB-C cable to have no dependency on WiFi but still I can't get this working. Are there any ideas to try ?

Hi Andrew,

your hint towards the VPN solved my connection problem. I had CISCO Anyconnect app running on my iMac which not only blocked Sidecar but also the "Import form iPhone" feature in the Finder.

Thanks for the hint!

Best

I have found a solution to my issue with SideCar where it was working wirelessly but not working using the USB cable.

After checking through the other solutions described I was still having the issue

  • Apple ID matches
  • Trust relationship reset
  • Reset home folder permissions
  • Reset MacOS networking stuff
  • etc etc

I have ESET Smart Security (Antivirus + Firewall application) installed and I had the USB connection to the IPAD classified as a public network. When reviewing the Firewall logs, I could see connections being blocked. After changing the classification to "Home" or "Work" SideCar connected immediately with the USB cable. Now I can charge my iPad from my MacBook and use SideCar at the same time.

Other Firewall applications may also interfere with the operation of SideCar.

You can easily test this by temporarily disabling your firewall. I would strongly encourage you to ensure you configure the firewall correctly rather than simply turning it off to resolve the issue long term.

Solution has been found on reddit.

Following the instructions, I noticed there were two .plist files in particular that looked suspicious:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

preferences.plist contained a reference to "iPad USB" (even though I didn't see iPad USB in my "Network" settings).

NetworkInterfaces.plist contained multiple references to "iPad".

I made a backup of the two .plist files, deleted them from the SystemConfiguration folder, and rebooted. Voila! Now Sidecar works over USB.

it works for me

  1. Open Terminal
  2. cd /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
  3. sudo rm -rf NetworkInterfaces.plist
  4. sudo rm -rf preferences.plist
  5. Restart Mac

I just solved my problem. I'm not sure it's working for everyone.

  1. Log-out and re-log-in for both iPad and Macbook pro. (didn't work.)
  2. reset the privacy setting for 'trust this computer' (didn't work)
  3. delete the devices (iPad pro and Macbook pro) on my device list by iPhone, and re-log-in to iCloud. (didn't work)
  4. reset all settings for iPad (worked)

I think step 1 and step 3 are kinda important to reset the connection.

Hope you find a way to solve the problem.

Wi-Fi only is inconvenient when I want to charge my iPad while it's being used in SideCar mode. horstfromtoronto's suggestion worked. To save others a web search, here's Apple's guide on reseting trust settings on iOS: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202778#change

This process didn't actually ask me to re-"Trust this Computer" – it just simply worked when I launched SideCar again.
